Carried this as on a multi-week walk across Western Australia's great western woodland. It is a low rainfall risk area so light weight option is valuable. When it did rain , I was not confident, as we were walking through dense post fire regeneration, and I expected the scrub to shred this poncho in minutes. Not so, it emerged unscathed days later, it is extraordinarily tough. The trade off for the weight saving is that it is difficult to fit, you can't throw it over your pack like a heavier poncho, and it helps to have a companion to make sure it's in place .

Good choice for ultralight backpacking

It's actually pretty hard to find a poncho for backpacking that is light, durable, packable and that will effectively cover a full-size backpack. This poncho was our choice for a month on the John Muir Trail, and it performed well.I personally think a poncho is preferable to a rain shell plus a pack cover. With the pack cover, padded straps get soaked and a rain jacket + pack cover is likely to be heavier than a light poncho like this one. This poncho is very lightweight (5 oz) and rolls/stuffs into a very small stuff sack. It is completely waterproof, has some snaps to allow you to adjust it around the arms, has a drawstring for the hood and the hood is shaped to keep rain off your face. It dries fast. Will not keep your legs dry, and your arms will also be exposed with relatively short sleeves. This design worked fine. However, I want it to be a little longer in the back. Our backpacks were mostly covered, but the bottom of the backpacks was right at the bottom of the poncho and got a little damp in an extended shower. If your pack were taller than ours, you might find that the poncho doesn't cover it completely.Ultralight ponchos all seem to be pricey, this is certainly not a cheap product, about $100. But other equal weight options were $150 / $170. Significantly lower options were either twice as heavy or not made for long-term use.

I’ve used the nano poncho 4 times within the past month and I’m pleased with the fit and function. I especially like the fact that it compresses into such a small stuff sack. It’s easily fits in the bottom of my day pack for those ā€˜iffy’ days. I do wish, however, that the 2 side snaps on each side were a little stronger. Extremely light weight and completely waterproof!!

Nice lightweight poncho
10 November 2023

I bought this to use when I didn’t need to take a rain jacket on my backpacking trips. It’s super lightweight. I ended up using it on my Grand Canyon trip. While it didn’t cover all of the backpack (not a big deal since my gear was wrapped in plastic) it served the purpose I bought it for. I do think it’s a bit pricey and it took me over a year to decide whether I wanted to buy it.

Perfect for urban travel
6 October 2024

I am not a hiker, camper, or climber. I don't want to be eaten by bears or wind up as the subject of one of those documentaries with titles like "so you think you'd survive??" I am an urban trekker and world traveler. I don't use umbrellas, because I need my hands free for my urban walking stick and for schlepping things. This poncho is lightweight and can be carted around in my urban backsling. Will save me from becoming drenched in places like Luxembourg where there aren't enough tall buildings to duck under when the skies open up.

Poncho an Excellent Travel Accessory

I bought the poncho so that I wouldn’t have to shoehorn a rain coat into my luggage when I go to Japan during typhoon season. I tested it during some spring rainstorms at home, and it did indeed keep me comfortable and dry, and I didn’t have to worry about the stuff in my sling bag getting wet. I put the wet poncho in a ziplock bag when the sun came out.(Note: S&S doesn’t seem to understand the scope of its market, since my ā€œactivityā€ is not mentioned here. That activity is Walking. Sea To Summit Poncho

I bought this poncho for a trip to Patagonia, Chile and was really disappointed with the performance. I used it during a light off and on drizzle, and by the end of the day my clothes and pack were soaked. I am not returning it because it will make a nice lightweight tarp when I am backpacking this summer, but beware of purchasing it expecting that it will keep you dry.... I have tons of Sea to Summit products and love all of them - this one just fell a bit short of expectations.

Shelter + rain protection.
4 May 2024

I used this as a tarp for shelter in combination with the nano mosquito net. All up, 8 x pegs included, the set -up weighed under 400gms. I wouldn't give the set-up 5 stars for comfort as it was cramped and tended to sag. As a poncho in the rain it was top notch. 6 days hiking Carnarvon Gorge QLD and this was ideal for the conditions.

Torn between a 4 and a 5

I really like this garment. I've always been a high-end GoreTex guy, but refuse to pay those premiums any longer. I was hoping this would give me the ventilation I needed to wear a puffy without worrying about internal moisture buildup. Did a test with walking around town 2.5-3 hrs in continuous light rain. I always kept my arms inside, but developed a strip of moisture along the lower arms where the front/back come together (somewhat expected, but with a slightly longer arm design could be avoided). The other problem was that the face of the fabric itself slowly leaked (it was not sweat buildup as I wore cotton layers for the test and the inner layers were completely dry). Ultralight rain protection!
16 February 2021

This thing is awesome! I was debating between this and the heavier version by Sea to Summit, but I'm glad I got this version as it is incredibly tiny when in it's sack and lightweight. Definitely worth the extra cost! It takes the place of a backpack cover, rain jacket, tarp, and (potentially) rain pants in your pack, while being smaller and lighter than any of those items by themselves! The stuff sack is small (which can be a positive when considering the amount of room you save in your pack) however I was, with some effort, able to get it back in effectively after removing it for use. I am excited to continue to put this thing to the test here in the PNW where rains are, at times, incessant. I do find myself wondering if further enhancement of design could enable better protection from rain for the arms, however I understand that this is a tarp / poncho combo, so it would be a challenge that would likely drive up price a bit as well and would add material in random places when being used as a tarp. Thanks for the awesome product Sea to Summit!
