SeaChem Flourish Excel is a source of bioavailable organic carbon. All plants require a source of carbon. This is typically obtained from CO2, but, may also be derived from simple organic compounds (such as photosynthetic intermediates). Therefore, one can derive a substantial benefit with the use of Flourish Excel either alone or in conjunction with CO2 injection. Flourish Excel also has iron reducing properties which promote the ferrous state of iron (Fe+2), which is more easily utilized by plants than ferric iron (Fe+3). A very popular product with our keen plant growers! Directions On initial use or after a major (>40%) water change, use 1 capful (5ml) for every 40L (10 Gallons). Thereafter use 1 capful for every 200L (50 Gallons) daily or every other day. Dosing may be slowly increased in high-growth aquariums. For smaller dosing please note that each cap thread is approximately 1 mL. Do not overdose. 500ml treats 400L (100 Gallons) for 1-2 months.

Excel is an excellent product to add carbon to water in a planted aquarium if you are not using CO2. I purchased it because it is also an additive you can use to resolve an algae bloom. I had a serious problem with brown algae. Excel completely resolved the algae problem but be aware that it depletes oxygen from the water. I lost a bunch of fish because I did not completely understand this. Beware of web posts that advise you to overdose Excel without addressing the oxygen depletion issue. I would suggest increasing aeration through air stones and removing the top on the aquarium while using large doses of this product. DO NOT OVERDOSE IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO LOOSE FISH! Having had FW plant systems for many years, I have addressed the ability of getting CO2 into the tank in many ways, from tablets, home made CO2 generators, CO2 injection systems with marginal success on all of them, not to mention the pain to keep them all replenished and waiting to be used also.I stumbled on Excel Organic Carbon additive by accident, and got a small bottle and tried it. Noticed within a few days, all plants responding by greening up and looking lots more perkier. After a month I knew I finally found the secret to growing aquatic plants, that was about two years ago. Since then I have 'harvested' about 100 Wendii's and sold them to pet stores. I started with 8 of them a couple of years before. All this from a 75 gal plant tank, took a bit of time ... MoreHaving had FW plant systems for many years, I have addressed the ability of getting CO2 into the tank in many ways, from tablets, home made CO2 generators, CO2 injection systems with marginal success on all of them, not to mention the pain to keep them all replenished and waiting to be used also.I stumbled on Excel Organic Carbon additive by accident, and got a small bottle and tried it. When you get the balance you will also see a reduction in the amount of algae your system generates, and plants that grow very nicely. This is the best additive I have ever seen for the planted aquarium.

This product works wonders for your underwater plant life. Used correctly it can increase growth, brighten color and keep your tank pert near algae free. I originally purchased this product to use in a water dip to remove hair algae from my java moss. Within three days the moss was visibly less congested, and by the end of the week it was completely clean and algae free. Mission success. It is important to monitor oxygen levels when using co2 diffusers and products, but so far I have had no issues, I am very careful not to overuse this product. I will be attempting to use it in conjunction with other flourish products. I have several species of freshwater shrimp, and snails, the flourish lines seem to work well with invertebrates and have not interfered with their ... MoreThis product works wonders for your underwater plant life. Plants Love Flourish Excel
1 December 2015

Most live aquarium plants need additional carbon to really thrive. I don't want the expense or maintenance effort involved with a system that adds carbon mechanically. Flourish Excel fills the need effortlessly. The crypts grow right up to the surface. The Anubis actually flower. Swords grow big too. I've tried other plants but not so successfully but that's only because some of the fish like to dig them up and/or graze on certain plants before they have a chance to establish. I keep only hardy fish and plants. If you have live plants you will be pleased with Excel. Tank specs: 90 gallon fresh water, lights: 4x65 watt 6500k, no heat (have lost tank twice in 30 years when heater quit (would not turn off) and fish "cooked" Hardy fish & plants tolerate a wider range of ... MoreMost live aquarium plants need additional carbon to really thrive. I have multiple tanks with plants in it, and use Excel in all of my tanks. I use it for 2 reasons:1. A way to add liquid carbon to the tanks that don't have-won't get CO2.2. A way to keep algae away and at bay in all of my tanks.I do have a 75 gallon set up with tons and tons of plants, a pressurized CO2 system and use the EI system for fertilization. I have had some nasty bba and staghorn algae outbreaks from before the CO2 and in between tweaking the CO2 for stability. I tried to use peroxide to kill the established algae on my plants (including a few anubias) but the peroxide burned many leaves along with killing the algae. So I started adding Excel to my tank on a daily basis and at the first (higher dose of 40 ml) for a week and then alternating the ... MoreI have multiple tanks with plants in it, and use Excel in all of my tanks. I have been very impressed in the lack of algae in the tank. and have been keeping up the Excel regimen since January. When I started getting some hair algae in my 5,5 gallon shrimp tank, I started adding Excel (normal dose) daily and it also worked to remove and keep the algae from coming back.

Revived my plants
2 June 2021

I have a very planted tank and I had bought some plants online. They came pretty much dead. The water wisteria was pretty much all wilted, had no roots, and was grown out of water so that is have to a climate it to submersed growth. I didn't think it would live at all. I tossed in a few stems to float just to see what would happen. That just so happens to be the same day I started dosing this fertilizer. All my plants started to grow some muck faster and bigger and greener. In just one week the water wisteria grew new leaves and shortly after grew roots. This fertilizer brought my plants back from the dead. Definitely recommend and I will definitely only use this fertilizer from now on. Even compared to the regular seachem flourish, the excel is superior.

Seachem Excel - Great for planted aquarium
23 February 2023

I've been using this product for about 5 years and it works wonders on the plants in the tank. I didn't want to hassle with a CO2 setup and opted for this chemical alternative. It's easy - one capful a day for a 55 gal tank and the results are amazing - lots of healthy growth. Highly recommend!

Seachem Flourish Excel good for getting rid of algae
4 July 2021

I have been using Excel for a few years now for getting rid of black bread algae and algae and it does a great job. I only do the spot treatment way, first I turn the filter pump off, next I spot treat the algae where it is with a syringe and then leave the pump off for about 30 minutes and then turn it on, after a few days the algae goes brown and then dies off totally! I use 12ml per day for about a week in a Juwel Vision 180 and about 5ml in my Juwel Primo 60. Also my plants grow like crazy with this stuff! I have also added a picture of my main tank which it works best on.

Waste of Money
12 October 2020

Does't do much if anything to my planted aquarium. I have black beard algae in my 65 gal tank. For the past five years. I've tried taking out all my plants and used a bleach solution to kill the algae. And used Excel everyday. Every think looked good for about a week. Then it appeared again. Been to many forums to discuss my problem and nothing works. I spent a small fortune on Excel over 5 gallons over the passed few years. The price has doubled since March of this year. Don't waste your money. Big promises and no results.
