Seachem Flourite Black 7 kg, 15.4 lbs
Flourite Black is a specially fracted stable porous clay gravel for the natural planted aquarium. Its appearance is best suited to planted aquaria, but may be used in any freshwater aquarium environment. Flourite Black is most effective when used alone as an integral substrate bed, but it may be mixed with other gravels. Gravel modifiers such as laterite are not necessary. Flourite Black is not chemically coated or treated and will not alter the pH of the water. Flourite Black is good for the life of the aquarium and need not be replaced.Set-upAlthough it is pre-washed, because Flourite Black is a natural product, it may become dusty in transit and require rinsing before use to remove any residual dust. When adding water to the aquarium, fill slowly to avoid disturbing Flourite Black substrate bed. Place a bowl in the aquarium and add water directly to the bowl, allowing water to overflow softly on to the gravel bed. Initial cloudiness is normal. To remove cloudiness, use mechanical filtration (such as filter floss). Use a water clarifier to accelerate clearing.

Great looking substrate and if true about it's porous nature I expect the plants should root and grow better (too early to tell)Only 4 stars because 'this product is pre cleaned but may still need a rinse due to the product unsettling during transit' or something to that effect is the quote of the manufacturerMAY need a rinse. A LITTLE dust!!!Holy hell. I rinsed the hell out of it before adding to the tank and I'm glad there was no fish in the tank, it became so turbid you couldn't see 2cm inside the tank glass.Aside from that looks good which you get the dust out (hell of a challenge)

After using a commercially available, big name substrate that turned my water incredibly hard I decided to go "all natural" and use this fracted clay Flourite which apparently is another form of laterite. It will supposedly last the life of the aquarium. It's one big draw back is the mess it creates initially. No matter how much you rinse this stuff it will badly cloud the water and it's taken several days for my Eheim classic filter to finally get the water clear and this despite taking the fine pads out and rinsing them twice. I guess in the long run it's probably worth the initial mess, but be prepared for it.

I just put this in today so I can't accurately write a review on it's effect on plant life BUT I do have to write a bit of a warning .... It notes that it makes the water cloudy and it will settle on it's own in a few hours Well it makes the water cloudy to a point that it's possibly filter medium clogging and fish sufficating . I recommend this for use in Nano tanks ONLY because a larger tank with this stuff would be a serious pain in the butt Now this is the second most recommended stand alone planting substrate I could dig up online and alot of people love it so I'm definitely not going to slam it however My fix for the cloudyness issue was to cover this substrate in normal fine black aquarium sand then do manual NOT GRAVEL VAC water changes until the water was ... MoreI just put this in today so I can't accurately write a review on it's effect on plant life BUT I do have to write a bit of a warning .... Seriously these tanks are never going to be able to be gravel vacced again .... so my method was to fill a cup and slowly dip it into the water to remove the cloudy water , then put new water in with nearly no pour off ...and that's now my water change method ....if this works to keep plants alive in my tanks then this stuff is totally worth it but I recommend setting it up , planting your plants when the water is just not cloudy enough to see it , then water change till thewater is clear again because this stuff is super light and super fine and anytime you might need to move anything it will recloud the water and you'll be starting all over with haveing to do full water changes every 15 min until the water is clear again , if you have fish that like to root around in the substrate ..... Don't get the sand , get the gravel. This stuff may work for planting but it will also knock your cleaning work up to a whole new level as everytime you gravel vac you will be back to cloudy ... Get some cleaning life for your tank or just don't bother with the vacc. Maybe a ground cover plant would help hold this stuff down to.

Using this in my 55 gal tank. It will cloud the heck out of the water at first, so give it a super good rinse before adding it. Its a bit heavier than regular gravel and it fits together more compact and really holds your live plants in place. Looks wonderful and natural. Color-wise, its a mix of browns with a few specks of lighter colors. Not super dark like the black version but still lets your plants and fish stand out well against it. I have 2 bags in my tank already but may need a third.
This is a gorgeous substrate! I love the color variation and the way it matches with my clay pot decor. Now that I have this substrate installed I can order my plants!Do your homework; rinse this substrate *very* thoroughly! I rinsed it in small batches in a colander over a bucket. My second batch I rinsed in small batches in a colander outside and it went much faster, but it is good to have options. After I placed it in fish tank I *slowly* filled it with water over the course of a few hours. The extra time and care is very much worth the fantastic result.
Seachem can be used in many ways. For my actual use, because of its clay content, was to feed and hold down all of the organic materials in my dirt substrate.I like the fact that you can rinse off the dust right in the bag. You add water, soak for a few seconds and then scoop out what you need for placement in your tank. Because of personal choice, I used the black sand and I love the color. It gives my planted tank a look of realism - like the bottom of a river bed.Because of rocks and pool sand using up space, I only needed the 3.5 kg bag in my 75 gallon tank.
So good news and bad news. Good news is that your root system for your aquarium plants is going to love this stuff. Used this on a 55 gallon aquascape and it looked stunning. Bad news, its filthy. Youre going to want to give this stuff a solid rinse before putting it in your tank. Not too much though because some of the silt can be useful, but otherwise yes it requires some rinsing. Overall, if youre buying this for a planted tank, worth the money and time.
Description says just wash off the dust before putting into tankNot sure if they have cut back on washing and drying as my 3 bags looked like it contained wet clayAfter washing twice it was fine and looks great in tank
Thanks for a good deal! I'm trying out the Flourite in a new tank. It needed some rinsing before I put it in, but now it looks great and holds plants well.
