Did not work in AMD computer but ok in Intel

The video files on this drive would play but stutter and lag while the drive would make strange tick sounds. I ran a PC test utility and got 130MB read speed and 10MB write speed (yes 10MB!). Doubled my storage

My main computer is split between an SSD drive for programs and a large hard drive to store my photos. I thought 2 TB would be enough to handle all my needs, but after four years the drive was getting full and performance was declining. I was thinking about getting a new computer, but decided to double the size of the hard drive instead. Purchase and shipping was flawless. Installation was fairly easy. I had backed everything up and the whole process took about four hours. Very pleased with outcome.

Product came WELL packaged within multiple layers of cardboard. Electrostatic packaging appeared unopened and drive looked new. Luckily I found my extra SATA cables and quick install hard drive brackets for my housing. All connected effortlessly and my I7-2700 recognized it when I started the system back up. Took me a while to figure out how to get Windows 10 to recognize the space but soon figured that out and I now have 1.8TB of useable storage space for files and backups. So far so good and no hickups yet.

Good Enough for most people
24 July 2021

Pro: Good price. Good read performance. Acceptable write performance*.Con: This drive uses SMR in order to hit the platter vs capacity that it uses. A side effect means that the write performance of the drive nose dives when doing a long sustained write (seq or rand). For most people this fact will not impact them in any way, but is a huge issue if you want to use this drive in any sort of RAID setup.A side note is that Seagate buries any information on the recording tech a drive uses which really sucks when trying to make an informed purchase. Conclusion: You get what you pay for, and for most people this drive is a great value. For those on the more power user end of things do your research to make sure that this drive will work for your use case.

Great for me, but not fast and use SMR
14 January 2022

First some negatives, which are not an issue in my case: As you may have read elsewhere, these drives are not suitable for a NAS. They spin slowly at 5400 RPM. They use Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR), which makes them unsuitable for write-intensive use. (A few years ago I thought one of my earlier Seagate SMR drives was defective when the write speed slowed to a crawl, perhaps 10 MBS/sec. However, everything was fine; I paused my writing and let the drive move data into it's final position, and the speed picked up again.) In my case I use the drives to store backups and video, and read from them much more than I write. My three drives were well packed in OEM packaging. I used Seagate's verify website to check that the drives were genuine. I used the HDTune utility ERASE function to write random data to the entire surface of each drive and then read data back to verity each byte written. (A 30-hour process per drive.)During these tests the SMART data showed many seek errors and many CRC errors, all of the latter being correctable. I assume that these errors are normal for drives of this sort, as has been the case with similar drives that I've used for several years with no problem.

My second hard drive and my pc has room for 3
22 February 2023

I edit videos and since I have to record plenty I need memory and also memory for backup, this is my second Seagate BarraCuda that I have on my computer. I got the second one to backup the first just in case something goes wrong. It was easy to install, I found the cables on my computer, plugged both cables and then in settings just added the memory and done. I also downloaded the Seagate health checkup to keep an eye on it. I like that it comes with a 2 year warranty. It reads and writes fast and since I edit large videos I need something fast and this keeps up.I like how it works. easy to install and setup and very reliable.

Purchase during Covid pandemic
15 August 2022

It's not secret that covid stop production of all thing. Once of those things are the hardware for computers. Seagate is a good brand that I trust for years due to it's durability based on my experience. I can't say the same for others, but I had no issue. I took advantage of the sale and installed it on my computer ASAP since it's prebuilt that came with 500GB SSD. Currently using this 8TB as a secondary, to install video games, project files for Unreal Engine, Unity, or coding files from Microsoft Visual Studio. There is a reason on my title say Purchase during Covid Pandemic. Apparently there is 30% defect among Seagate products and where I work, IT department confirmed Seagate Exos are among that 30% defects. SAVE, STORE, RETRIEVE
6 May 2023

So I only purchased this to save store and retrieve. However I may not retrieve till 10 plus years from now. I use these to store raw original content from various TV shows and movies. After it's saved I buy the drive into the anti static bag and it goes into a fire proof metal case and I almost never have to go back to it. I have clients that ask me about footage that sometimes goes back 20 years. This drive is reliable, not to fast but fast enough and does what I need it to do. Simple 8TB of basic storage that I keep off the system just as a backup. BH has done it again, before this I would use a 5TB portable drive around the same price point.

Terrible Drive! Went thru 2 drives in as many days
16 September 2022

Similar to a previous reviewer this drive is not built for any type of mass data storage. Here's my story: First drive purchased, worked fine out of the box, then proceeded to copy all my data storage files to it, after an overnight copy, still wasn't done. Was sluggish slow, and hung my computer. Rebooted, and bench tested the drive, with abysmal specs. Took it back, and Best Buy was good enough to exchange the drive, no questions asked. Second drive, worked out of the box, this time a full bench mark, and drive appeared to be meeting online specs. Began the full copy. Stopped it after 6 hours, and did another benchmark, and stats were similar, but about 10% worse than originally. Restarted the copy overnight, next morning, same sluggish behavior as the first. I don't know if they are overheating, or weren't meant for multiples files or what. But I've never witnessed such a horrendous product right out of the box. My 10 year old WD 1TB drive is faster, after all these years, and still benchmarks as good as new. This Seagate drive is total garbage. Avoid at all opportunity.

Worst HDD purchase ever made

If you enjoy having your entire OS corrupt every 3-5 days this is the HDD for you!I never thought that such a poor quality HDD could be released on the market legally but here we are.To start the read/write speeds are atrocious on a good day, even for a mechanical HDD. Transfering anything even slightly large will require you to have to leave your PC idle because if you try to load anything up during the process your whole OS will freeze. Secondly and as I mentioned before, the amount that this drive has corrupted files (particularly OS files) in the 2 months I've owned it is astounding. So ultimately if you get this HDD you should also get real used to seeing "setting up automatic repair" a good chunk of the times you decide to restart your machine. But ... MoreIf you enjoy having your entire OS corrupt every 3-5 days this is the HDD for you!I never thought that such a poor quality HDD could be released on the market legally but here we are.To start the read/write speeds are atrocious on a good day, even for a mechanical HDD.
