Seagate 8TB IronWolf Pro 7200 RPM SATA III 3.5 Internal NAS HDD ST8000NT001

Amazing value!...but at what cost?\n\nSerial Number checked on seagate site and shows an actual 12TB Ironwolf Pro.\n\nTested with CrystalDisk, shows true unopened and untouched drive at 0 hours open, and sequential r/w speeds of around 230MBps. All 10.9TB of usable space is legit and working.\n\nThe only problem is that the warranty serial and QR code do not work. However, after checking the quality and performance of the drive and especially the price! (which is less than half from a reputable store), I believe this drive will last me for years for my use case\n\nIf you have the same case as me and use a Personal NAS for simply storing files, it has incredible value. Constant Growling

I finally retired a set of Timecapsules and opted for a Synology NAS (DS220+) for Time Machine and other backups. Two 12 TB Ironwolf Pro drives were added assuming that my storage needs will grow over time and the premium for the pro level of reliability seemed reasonable. These may be acceptable drives for a rack in a server room but they aren't suitable for any reasonably quiet environment. They are constantly grumbling in the background. One reviewer likened it to an aquarium bubbler and I can see that analogy as it isn't a constant sound and the volume will raise and lower as it goes through its read/write cycles. I've isolated the NAS in a cabinet, used foam to decouple from any surfaces, and it still is a full time source of noise. Good capacity and speed, bit noisy head movements

Bought 2 of these to mirror each other. Sequential write speeds for both are good which is useful during array rebuilds or other heavy data transfer. Got a steady write speed of 125 MB/s increasing to 138 MB/s, likely due to the heads moving from the inside to the edge of the platters. Bear in mind translates to well over a day for a full rebuild, but that's expected at such a high capacity. Did not test random access speeds.Acoustics - the head movement noise during seeking was louder than I expected, when compared to lower capacity models I have from the same range. Might be something to bear in mind depending where you want to put these.

Got Lucky This Time, Two Drives Acctually Worked This Time

Had to think hard about ordering two more of these dirves after my last experience with Seagate IronWolf Pro drives. After receiving my last order of 6 of these drives, two of them would not even spin up. I attempted to work with Seagate support to get them replaced and this ended up being useless. I sent them sound recordings of the drives trying to start up and still after two weeks of emails back and forth, I gave up and simply used the standard Seagate RMA process to get them replaced. I ended up paying for the shipping back to Seagate. Seagate support was very dissapointing to say the least.

Highest speed HDD I've seen or measured

I don't have any extreme brand loyalty in mechanical drives. They're becoming fairly uncommon in consumer computers, being generally reserved for long term storage of large amounts of data. USB 3.1 cables can transmit data faster than the drive can read or write the files, making internal SATA HDDs completely optional. Even so, I like to have a couple of traditional mechanical drives inside my computer case. Seagate is a huge supplier to OEMs of mid grade data drives. This specific model is not one of those. This is a big, heavy, solid, fast, and quiet HDD. I don't think they get much better than this.

Ironwolf data shows up in Synology DS716+II

I've used Synology NAS since around 2003 and pretty much found every drive maker has good and bad runs. HGST was the only drive I could say I had trust in.I've had three of this model (6GB ST6000NE000-2KR101) and so far they made it over 18 mo just fine.I like the extended SMART data branded under Ironwolf on this drive, but I'm holding off judgment, since every failed drive on my Synology I detected due to performance issues (freezing while copying files etc). I look at the SMART diagnostics and always states the drive was healthy. Um, yeah... Maybe the Ironwolf will do better.Bottom line, I just manage risk by only buying my hot spare when my performance tanks so I am not burning a warranty down just to have a hot spare. Ironwolf version earns and extra star for at least attempting to provide something better than the useless SMART data.

Great HDD for my NAS. Works perfectly. Brand new with zero hours on the smart test.I bought one of these off of Amazon and they had it in a different box than the manufacturer. Amazon said it was brand new but it was completely dead and couldn't even be recognized by the motherboard. Had to return it and then when to microcenter. Service was great and the hard drive came in the sealed manufacturer's box and worked perfectly. I trust microcenter with all my PC parts.

PRO Drives are VERY Quiet - Similar in sound from SSD

Upon researching, I discovered IronWolf Pro drives and was impressed by their high recommendations, especially considering the 5-year warranty compared to the 3-year warranty on the non-Pro versions, which are slightly slower but still quite good.After installing the IronWolf Pro drives in my NAS, I was pleasantly surprised by their nearly silent operation. Seagate do not honor warranty

I purchased 12 of these 20TB drives in 2022. One failed after 17 months. Seagate claim someone else RMA'd it, and after I showed them proof I still have it, they now say their software that allows correcting the warranty period hasn't been working for a month and they cannot process a replacement drive. While checking out the warranties for the other 11 drives, they claim that one of them is a child of an enclosure, and they will not honor the warranty for this drive should the need arise. I am hoping B&H can figure out what's going on with these issues and resolve them. Until then - 1*.

I haven't had these for a long period. I installed 8 of them into a Synology DS1821+ NAS and although the specific firmware and model weren't in the Synology compatibility list, they work just fine.The DS1821+ is an 8-bay NAS, and I wanted something larger than what I had so I was looking at 10~20TB drives. I simply did the match and the 18TB drive met the sweet spot for price / TB. All 8 drives came up and are working just fine and at speeds I would expect, so well within my acceptance range.I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these to anyone... and coming from B&H, I know they're not going to be some random, used off-the-back-of-the-truck leftovers with no warranty. So I felt safe in ordering them from B&H along with a Synology DS1821+ for important backup storage.
