A functional hard drive

Currently, if I put this hard drive into a hot swappable drive bay, it would vibrate hard enough to cause the tray to clatter against the bay (a very unpleasing sound). It just rubs that sore by also introducing a screeching noise whenever it is being used, the source unknown, I would suppose it's the platter against the spindle. Take a look at Toshiba or WD drives if you want to buy storage for important purposes.

Almost as fast as the first SSD purchased in 2012!

That's why I chose this model, and while I wasn't looking for a SSD at the time, the Samsung 850 EVO added only $30 to the cost (or the other way around), was a killer deal for a total of $99 plus shipping. Finally, if I had to do it all over again, would still go for this HDD, because compared to the newer version which will eventually supercede it, the reviews are better as a percentage. May purchase another just to have it, when one finds a winner, that's what matters the most. Get one of these while you can, because when gone, will be on the secondary markets, likely used & 2x the cost.

Excellent cost effective drive
8 April 2020

I always had great success with Seagate drives all those years. Some have 10 years old. They just become too small. This drive is a model of evolution. They are thin, light with huge capacity. Mine (1TB) clock at 185MB/sec read and 165MB/sec write with Crystaldisk (500mB test). I have a brand new system with a Ryzen 2200G. Of course SSD beat then easily in performance but at this point, the good old hard drive is the most cost effective solution for large capacity. It seems to me that the downward flash ram price has slow down now, so HDD are still relevant.

I bought 4 around 2013 to build an array of RAID5. Now in 2021 I bought another batch of 4 to expand the array. First, it's good that they are still available to match what I already have. I don't think exact model matching is necessary for RAID, but usually there is less trouble to be so. Although bought new, they were still made around 2013. I did a surface test for each drive after receiving, which took about two days because each test ran 5-6 hours. Among the 4 units I received, two were made in Thailand and two China. Both units made in China detected bad sectors while Thailand ones were good. The tool for surface test is DiskGenius, which rates the sector health in a scale from excellent, good, etc. to damaged. The tool for surface test is DiskGenius, which rates the sector health in a scale from excellent, good, etc. to damaged. So a bad drive not only has damaged sectors but also contains many at the severe level. One bad drive even didn't finish the test. When I looked at it, there were physical scratches on the body and PCB. I returned the two bad ones and received replacements. In the mean while, I unplugged disks from the existing array and did a test one by one. It's interesting to see that the 4 drives bought previously were also two from China and two Thailand. They all passed the tests. When I received the replacements, I saw their origin were both from Thailand. Surface test results also indicated that they were on par with the other good drives. My experience is that one should immediately test hard disk drives after purchasing, return or replace those with bad sectors. There is likely a correlation between origin and quality. So far, I received and tested 10 drives, 6 from Thailand and 4 from China. All 6 from Thailand are good, and 50% of the 4 from China had bad sectors, 25% already malfunctioned. Using DiskGenius those good disks have mostly excellent sectors with a small portion in good level, but nothing below good.

I bought this drive, the Seagate 3TB Desktop HDD SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive (ST3000DM001) in 2014 and installed it in my mid-2010 iMac. It is a Hard Drive.

As a normal PC user who uses hard drives as something needed to just be in place and work as well as other hard drives, and not a massive reviewer for magazines and trade adverts, the Barracuda does its job. It is quiet, it is faster than some of my previous drives (but it is new and hasn't been filled with fragmented data left over from previous use) and I would hope it is going to stay reliable. The questions asked to give a star rating contains the question "Is it reliable" How can a new user be expected to answer that when it is only a couple of months old?Perhaps I will re-evaluate the four star rating in a year or two when the question of reliability can be assessed. FOLLOW UP INFORMATION This HDD lasted untilOctober 2020, just over 3 years use as the main drive on a PC that is on and used 16+ hours every day. That is over 20400 hours of use. Is that reliable? I would say it is and add that it is one of the best so far to be on for that many hours. Most of my previous drives have never made it past 2 years before they started to give me trouble. I still use Barracuda drives as backup drives andfor major storage of photos and books but my new Portus Digital All-in-one uses SSD's so I don't think I will be buying so many discs in future.

My hard drive of choice for several years, but Seagate DiscWizard and/or Windows10 is creating formatting/disk copy problems
11 January 2021

I've bought 30-40 of these hard drives for computer builds because they were reliable, but also because Seagate DiscWizard transfer software (free for use if one drive is a Seagate) was easy to use and dependable to copy my standard hard drive load to an empty drive. In the last year it appears that either updates to Seagate DiscWizard or Windows 10 was making it impossible to copy my standard computer build load onto these or any other drives. I've tried a couple of other than Seagate drive brands and had issues with them too, so the problem may be Windows and not Seagate DiscWizard or Seagate drives. I've also tried other transfer software and had similar issues. Too bad, because I love building desktops but these issues have caused me to stop. 16 November 2016

So what can be special about a hard drive? Well I've read only one other review of this particular one saying it failed on the first day. So I decided to run a few tests to see if it was really a bad drive like the other user said. First I replaced another drive in my system with this one and started up Paragon Hard Disk Manager. If you have never used it before it is a very good program to test and verify Hard Drives. First I did a surface test, you have 2 choices normal and extreme, I choose extreme and ran the test. It takes a while so go do something else and come back in a few hours. What it does is writes to the entire drive and verify what it wrote is the same. One thing worth mentioning is this one tested much faster then an older drive I had of the same ... MoreSo what can be special about a hard drive? Well I've read only one other review of this particular one saying it failed on the first day. So I decided to run a few tests to see if it was really a bad drive like the other user said. First I replaced another drive in my system with this one and started up Paragon Hard Disk Manager. If you have never used it before it is a very good program to test and verify Hard Drives. First I did a surface test, you have 2 choices normal and extreme, I choose extreme and ran the test. It takes a while so go do something else and come back in a few hours. What it does is writes to the entire drive and verify what it wrote is the same. One thing worth mentioning is this one tested much faster then an older drive I had of the same size. Then I did a wipe of the drive and all went fine. I have always had very good luck with the reliability with Seagate drives and after 4 hours of read and write non stop tests I don't expect this one to fail. Write speed impressed me so much so I had to do it a couple of times. I was coping from a OCZ pciex4 ssd so read speeds are about 795MB/s limiting the read bottleneck. Write speeds on a 7gb file started at 320MB/s and tapered off to 165MB/s for the last few seconds and coping the same file back to the ssd was 1.5TB/s at first then dropping to 280MB/s for the last third of the write suggesting this Drive could maintain a 280MB/s read speed and a 165 MB/s write speed. Not bad for a $50 drive. Worth mentioning is this drive is thinner then most drives and lighter also, suggesting it is using high density platters, thus fewer of them. Update 11/16/16 Sorry to say the drive failed a week after this first review. Tried on both a PC with windows and a Mac. Under windows seagates "seatools for windows" would just hang trying to id the drive after windows finally booted after it seemed like forever trying to id the drive. Unders Mac os 10.9 disk utility came back with a failure as unable to read the last block. Also tried to format with a windows 10 setup cd, also failed. Went to Seagates website and did a RMA. Found out I had to pay return shipping and if they don't find anything wrong then they will also charge me for return shipping to me. Very poor in my opinion. When a product fails I believe the manufacturer should be paying shipping both ways especially after less then a month.
