I only ever purchase Seagate drives for two reasons: reliability and longevity. In spite of the problems with the 7200.11 firmware on other models, the 7200.12s more than make up for that past shortcoming. In fact, out of dozens and dozens of Seagates I've had, I've only had one major failure within ~3 months of purchase. Bad Seagates tend to fail immediately as a DoA or within a half hour of testing (when they can be readily returned) rather than six months to a year down the road (when the warranty is up) like some competing brands. At least, that's my opinion. For what it's worth, I believe these are 2 platter drives. They're also the full height 3.5" drives, for what its worth. Don't throw them at someone. They're heavy enough to probably do lasting damage. (The ... MoreI only ever purchase Seagate drives for two reasons: reliability and longevity. Any mechanical drive regardless of manufacturer that shows signs of error within the first 6 months has an increased chance of death. Drives that survive beyond 6 months has an increased chance of being a reliable, error free drive for years to come, pending your operational use. Please bare in mind that new drive purchases that arrive DoA are not necessarily the vault of manufacturer. Mechanical drives are sensitive instruments, and shipping alone from overseas could very well kill a drive before it arrives in the states. Most drive failures beyond that is generally due to negligence of the end user, such as poor ventilation. Cramming your case full of hard-drives is going to generate a lot of heat. When I recieved the drive I popped it in my win 7 box. Even though the BIOS saw the drive, running the OS, explorer did not. I tired it in another (xp) box; same deal. First, I thought the drive was defective, then got to thinking it may not be partition correctly. Therefore, I pulled my first box with win 7 OS drive and left this new one in the box and performed an "install" enough to partition it. That worked, so this may be helpful information for other facing the same issue. I think it was my bad, therefore, giving 5 stars to the product. I've only had the drive one day, so all of this is assuming later on it's working well. (no time to go back to change my review-busy person). If it's good I plan to purchase more.

Bought this one because it runs a little cooler then the comparable WD, meaning all else equal this one will live a little longer. In contrast I think some of the features in the WD would allow that drive to survive more shock abuse .. something that isn't a factor for me.
