I bought this a bit ago and have used it a handful of times. I have 3 folders of photos and video, and the folders are already corrupting. As a photographer, I expect that some of my electronic files will eventually degrade over time, but this happened almost immediately. I now have to sort through over 4,000 photos again. DO NOT BUY. Spend the extra $50 and get a better drive.

I picked up this drive for backup purposes. (I had a bit of a scare with a computer recently and nearly losing some files prompted me to reevaluate my backup hygiene...)So of course I took a quick trip to Microcenter and got squared away. This drive has plenty of space for my backup needs, doesn't take up much room on my desk, and cost less than $50 -- not bad!I've been using it for a little over a month now, and mostly haven't thought about it, which for my money is a mark of a good backup drive -- if I notice it all the time, then it's probably not doing its job!Very satisfied, and would buy again!

I bought it about 20 days ago. It doesn't look very thick or solid, but OK. Storage speed is also OK. Untill today, when I listened to my mp3 audiobook stored in it, it stopped working suddenly.I am really scared because there are some very important photos in it, waiting for my Blackfriday computer for backing up.I therefore contacted Bestbuy Geek Service (online) to see if they can get my data back and if that Service will be free. It turned out they can not locate my order. I don't know why but cost me 2 hours back and forth. They did not know if their repair service would be free or not. Amazing, right? The only luck is after the long online chatting, I plugged it again and by some magic, it worked. My guess is, I should not use it to listen to my mp3 ... MoreI bought it about 20 days ago. It’s 5TB alright. But slow. 5400 rpm, and it feels like it. The price was terrific, about $100. I popped the drive out of its case, used a drive copier. 2TB copy took nearly 20 hours. Nothing wrong with this item at all. Killer cheap storage! Don’t get in a hurry.
OK, it's not NVME speed; but for what you're paying, this is a perfect compliment for a laptop that needs a backup drive you can locate into a safe, or secondary location. It's also FANTASTIC as your storage unit for the ROKU ULTRA, because it will fit your entire library of video files from your camera to preview on your television. It's silent and routinely hits 175MB/s transfer rates off a USB 3.0 Type A Connection from the laptop! Finally, there are those who may remember that once a 320MB Hard Drive was a $500.00 commodity...now this can go on sale for as little as $89.99!So your cost per unit of storage is so low that it's insane NOT to invest in one to back up your machine. There is no external power required, like the older 5TB drive by the same ... MoreOK, it's not NVME speed; but for what you're paying, this is a perfect compliment for a laptop that needs a backup drive you can locate into a safe, or secondary location. There is no external power required, like the older 5TB drive by the same manufacturer of just three years ago.It just keeps getting better....now, if GPUs could somehow become available...
Magnetic drives have the capacity and data retention needed for backup. The USB external format is easy to take offsite. Encrypt with LUKS and you can send through mail. Low price on this model.Weakness of magnetic is bearing freeze from too many years on shelf. Not a problem when rotating backups regularly.
I set this drive up as a Apple/Max TimeMachine Backup disk when the old one was failing. Can be connected directly to Mac USB port or configured on an AirPort (check google). Recommend using Disk Utility to reformat the drive to APFS and GUID partition. Smooth sailing from there. Just run the TimeMachine App in Settings and point the backup storage to the drive connected.
Bought this as a quick and easy backup device for multiple computers in the house. Windows recognizes the drive immediately. Comes with some software on the drive, but I just manually copy from the photos, music, documents, and downloads directories to separate top level directories on the portable drive, one per pc. Works well with usb 2.0 and usb 3.0, which is as fast as the internal drives can deliver data through the usb 3.0 interface. Uses a usb type-A cable, which is exactly what I needed since I have various vintages of PCs in the house, going back at least to core 2 duo era. The only very minor item to mention, it gets a little warm to the touch, but nothing to complain about. I highly recommend this drive.
I used this drive for occasional backup, and I mean occasional. I used it perhaps once a month for a couple of hours. I just plugged it in, light comes on you can feel the drive spinning but it is not recognized by computers, and of course it's past warranty. This really sucks, lucky I did not use it for anything critical, for that I use Westend Digital drives exclusively. WD' drives last me for 4-5 years with constant workload. Seagate drives are crap, will never buy again.
This HDD might look impressive on paper, but when you receive it. It does not hold up. The transfer speeds are terrible for what they are and there is not even any rubber casing to use when travelling. Most travel storage devices include some kind of rubber casing for protection again impacts and drops. This one has nothing. All that came was just the storage device and the little proprietary cable. It won't connect to a mac either, only Windows and Chrome OS. Don't buy this, NOT WORTH
