Drive arrived whole and worked right away. Very happy with transfer speeds. The drive is the noisiest one I have ever owned but the noise seems normal, not like the drive is going to fail. Given the price, warranty, capacity and speed I will put up with a little extra noise. After about a month of service I checked the drive with Seagate software. The SMART data indicated the drive had issues. I ran the long fix and the drive failed completely. Went through an RMA with Seagate, waited two weeks for the replacement from California but it was DOA. System wouldn't boot and the motherboard beeps when the drive is connected. RMA with Seagate is a long and arduous experience. I really am beginning to hate this drive. I have 4 other Seagate NAS drives which have been spinning for between 5 and 7 years with no issues at all. This one has a 5 year warranty so from the looks of things I will be an expert at the Seagate warranty process by the time this is over.

It's crazy that this 18TB enterprise drive is going cheaper than some 12TB hdds, so it is a great buy.The hard drive comes delivered in a good, cushioned package (none of the "free-flying HDDs in Amazon boxes" horror stories you see posted online ).Read is a consistent 270MB/s, and write speeds via USB (from a SSD) are a consistent 265MB/s, so pretty impressive!Only just started using the drive, so can't comment on reliability, but it does have the enterprise 5yr warranty and advertised 2.5M hours MTBF, so should do well (just remember to always have your 3-2-1 backup rule and nothing to worry about). The hardest thing was to stop myself buying more HDDs.Edit: Found out that this drive is a OEM drive, so Seagate themselves do not provide any warranty. Exos X18 18TB, selected as a large reliable mass storage disk. Unfortunately it was DOA. Got in touch with Scan and the suport was very helpfull and arranged for the retun of the disk for replacement.Obviously there was dissapointment on DOA and having to wait a week to receive a replacement. The drive: A week later I received the tested replacement, and all has been well withthe disk. I have read reviews that say that enterprise drives can be noisy in comparison to normal desktop drives, and this was a potential concern however totally unfounded. So far excellent drive reads/writes are ~230-270MBs, and the drive really is very quiet and will be very likely to considerr these for the next NAS. So hopefully it will prove reliable for years to come.

I use two similar drives as part of my backup process. My other is the slightly older "X10 Hyperscale" version, and it whines and clicks much more loudly than this one as it spins up and seeks. This newer version is much quieter, on par with slower drives I have. It reminds me of my old Barracuda drive from 2005 that was faster and quieter than my WD Velociraptor drives and managed to outlast them by a year or two as well. It feels solid and works well. I have this in an external USB 3 enclosure, and I copy backup disk images to it every few days. I also keep a copy of my internal data drive's uncompressed files on it. For disk image copies (~2-700GB each) I get sustained write speeds of 220+MB/s (as high as 250 as it goes on). For my data drive copy, which has hundreds of thousands of small files like photos, documents, and mp3s, it's much slower but gets the job done overnight. I love that this drive has enough write endurance to keep all of my disk images rotating through every day, and long enough shelf life that I can lock it up at a friend's house for offsite backup for 6 months without worrying about it going bad like an SSD might.
Seems fast, plenty large. As an Enterprise drive it seems more tuned for performance than noise levels, with lots of chunky buzzing seek noises. . . though I quite like that. Not getting too warm in the small and quite poorly ventilated case I'm using. Naturally you can't review the most important thing - reliability - unless it either fails in a short time or lasts for a very long one. So far so good. Price as purchased (on offer at £320) was much better than the nearest 18GB NAS/Red drive at more like £460 at the time of purchase.
Pros: Great drive, very fast transfer speeds in both read and write and cost effective for the capacity.Cons: Enterprise/NAS drives are much louder than standard consumer drives which can be a small annoyance when installed in a desktop computer. However this is a trade off for the capacity and performance.
Great drive so far. Can't comment on the noise level as it's in my server, but quieter than some old fans I had running in another box that it's replaced, so can't complain! I'd heard these drives could occasionally be duds so I was lucky to receive two decent ones off the bat. Time will tell on their reliability, but with 18TB to play with I'm pretty happy.
Both Western Digital and Seagate, and others (Toshiba), have introduce new drives in 2019-2020, many of which are SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording). These drives are not only slower, they won't work in many RAID setups or inside a NAS. blocksandfiles.com wrote about this issue a year ago and lucky for me I read that article. Now on to the Seagate 12TB Exos X16: First, this is a CMR drive (Conventional Magnetic Recording), which I rechecked upon receiving the drives. It's one of the fastest HDD on the market and I bought two at a relative bargain price at B&H. Seems to be in high demand, as B&H ran out of stock and I had to wait a little. I'm using the two drives in a Linux software RAID 1 configuration and it works perfect. I can also attest to the speed as I had to copy lots of TB to these drives, all the while the transferred data was online and accessible. What surprised me most, however, was how relatively quiet these drives are. I consider buying more for my backup server, maybe some spares too. Packaging was simple but perfect. Of course, only time will tell how good these drives really are. So far they are great.
Probably too many DOA reports to recommend this. Waiting for Newegg to deliver a working drive... Will update review if I ever get a working drive. Updated review after receiving replacement drive, which took quite a long time to get. Plugged the replacement drive into the same exact sata and power cables as the first one that wasn't recognized by bios and didn't work in the OS. The replacement drive was recognized fine in BIOS and initialized in the Windows 10 no problem. I coped about 4TB of thousands of files to it with no issues. Hopefully it will last. It has a 5 year warranty. This one is working great so far. Changing from 1 star to 3 stars for now.
I bought the hard drive, 2 weeks ago, the first one did not work out the box, just like one of the reviews stated earlier BUT, Scan quickly sent DPD to pick up the hard drive and within a week I was replaced with a brand new replacement. It's early days but its working like a charm, it can be a little noisy but its not enough to distract or irratate you when your doing your work. Like all hard drives, if your installing into a PC your going to lose a little bit. So I actually have access to 16.3TB.I would deffinetely buy another two at some point later, to replace my other drives. My trade is a Creative (graphics, animation, illustration, motion graphics) and sometimes as a hobby a beat maker.
