Bought 2 of these to mirror each other. Sequential write speeds for both are good which is useful during array rebuilds or other heavy data transfer. Got a steady write speed of 125 MB/s increasing to 138 MB/s, likely due to the heads moving from the inside to the edge of the platters. Bear in mind translates to well over a day for a full rebuild, but that's expected at such a high capacity. Did not test random access speeds.Acoustics - the head movement noise during seeking was louder than I expected, when compared to lower capacity models I have from the same range. Might be something to bear in mind depending where you want to put these.

I ordered an ST6000NE000 to replace a failing 3TB Seagate Desktop drive that was in my NAS (after 6 years of operation). I paid overnight shipping and received it the next day, inserted the drive and over the next 12 - 18 hours the drive was rebuilt. Immediately after the rebuild completed the new drive started logging increasing numbers of "Reallocated Sectors". Over the next 24 hours it reached over 19000 reallocated sectors. I submitted a refund request for the drive on a Thursday morning and ordered another one with overnight shipping in order to expedite getting a replacement drive. The replacement drive arrived on Monday (so much for overnight) and I plugged it into the NAS only to find that the new one is completely DOA. It won't even spin up - it just buzzes ... The IronWolf Pro drives are recognized with more useful information by the Synology system. The WDs came up as "generic" in the drive inspector application. There are special testing features that do not exist for the WD drives.Overall the IronWolf Pro drives themselves are 5 stars. The only reason I took a star off was for the hassle of having to do the return as a result (I'm assuming due to the absurdly rare instance of 2 brand new drives being completely DOA) of shipping probably handling them really roughly, causing some sort of failure - even when the drives come packed in bubble wrap, anti-static bag, and other protective packaging.Thanks B&H for making it as easy as realistically possible to return the bad drives and replace them! I continue to come more and more to your business as opposed to many other electronics retailers due to the great level of customer service you maintain!
What all can you really say about them? They're spinning drives and they're big! Definitely worth the money over the 5200rpm drives and a good cost saving point compared to SSD for big/long term storage. SSDs would be great, but for the storage I wanted it would be way too expensive. I bought a 4 pack of these for a RAID 5 configuration, which is giving me 15.69TB of storage. Actual capacity of these drives are 5.46TB each if you are wondering. They're fairly quiet, but you do hear them if you have it near you and they are active. Not the spinning, but more so the head moving. If you put them in a storage device and it's tucked away, you'll never know. Great choice for tons of storage!

HGST was the only drive I could say I had trust in.I've had three of this model (6GB ST6000NE000-2KR101) and so far they made it over 18 mo just fine.I like the extended SMART data branded under Ironwolf on this drive, but I'm holding off judgment, since every failed drive on my Synology I detected due to performance issues (freezing while copying files etc). I look at the SMART diagnostics and always states the drive was healthy. Um, yeah... Maybe the Ironwolf will do better.Bottom line, I just manage risk by only buying my hot spare when my performance tanks so I am not burning a warranty down just to have a hot spare. The drives also get rather hot after extended usage. The hottest of the 5 has peaked at 51 c during pre-read and zeroing. This is with two 140 mm fans blowing air over the drives and two more 140 mm fans pulling air out of the case. The lowest temp of the 5 is at around 41 c. So it seems like they can have a pretty wide temperature spread. I thought maybe the lower one was getting better air flow, but upon inspection it's actually the one with the least direct air flow! lol. Average temperature for all 5 drives is 46.5 c. I believe in redundancy, and this is my fourth NAS from Synology to run the IronWolf Pro series drives, and they, by far, have met my needs. I have yet to have a failed drive with Seagate IronWolf, even after a significant surge struck my original Synology 918+. I pulled the IronWolf HD's and installed them in a new 918+ and they worked like a charm. I expect long life, and lots of backups from these new HD's.
I don't have an ultra-quiet setup, but have not heard a peep from these drives (ordered 2). I was disappointed to see they have 2TB less than advertised available to use, so expect to only have 14.5TB available to start with. I feel like they should advertise the capacity based on what's available to the end user to use. It's definitely misleading. I did hear a few clicks when first fired up, but quiet since. It seems under certain rare conditions, these will make noise when they want to, but have not had an issue with noise otherwise; I only hear my fans. I use them in a RAID 0 config as Plex movie storage. B&H shipped quickly and the drives were packaged well. I will definitely order from B&H again.
This is a very large NAS drive at 16tb. So far the speed has been as expected, it can sustain around 200Mb/s for sequential writes, more for reads. I am using this one as a bulk cache drive for a media server node, and it does the job just fine. As this drive is absolutely massive in terms of storage space, I have it replicate to a backup array in case of a failure. If it were to start failing there is a good chance that it will give up completely before the data could be transferred out. The five year warranty gives me the warm fuzzies, and I am definitely not expecting a failure but you can never be too careful with storage.
