It's much more than just a collection of retro games. It's a nostalgia simulator. Instead of some plain main menu that you can click into each game from, the main menu is a bedroom with all the 50+ games lined up on a shelf that you click on to put the cartridge inside the Genesis. You get to change the bedroom settings to pick the time of day. You can customize the TV screen. The room is decorated with some novelty items from the games. I had a Sega Genesis 3 and didn't have a ton of games as a kid, but almost all of the ones I did have are on here. I still have my console and games, and they work, but they're in fragile condition, and I don't want to risk breaking them by playing with them. I play with a wireless Switch controller, and I can't seem to get a hang of the button placements from one game to the next. Nevertheless, it is very fun to revisit some of my favorite childhood games and to also try out "new" ones that I never had, all wrapped up in one affordable game.

I love that I can have a nice collection of classic Sega genesis games for Nintendo Switch, a console I can play on the go or at home on my TV. However, the emulation on this collection is horrible. There is very bad latency between button presses on the controller and action on screen. We are talking about Sega games here, they are usually fast paced and require accurate timing to when you press the button, but on the Switch it's nearly impossible to play most of these games because of the delayed action of button presses. Press jump in sonic, takes half a second for games to detect you pressed the button. To be honest, I could play all these games on my raspberry pi; but the fact that I can have them on my switch; and in a single card, is the main reason for me to get this collection. There are a lot of classig megadrive/genesis games; most of them are the best games made for the console; and beside few missing titles that I would love to see on the console (like some more fighting and driving games; in lieu of the many phantasy stars ); but overall the collection is very well balanced. The graphic is 1:1 with the original; and you can enhance it if you like, using filters; also you have the chance to save states for each game (up to 3), so you can just save the game at any time and continue again from that point; the beauty of playing old games on a modern ... This is the ultimate way to play Sega Genesis Classic games. The game's front end menu is perfect. It's almost as if you've gone back in time to the 80s/90s and are plugging the game into your Sega Genesis. The game is full of options and settings that you can adjust to your liking like the aspect ratio, you can play the games in original 4:3 or you can stretch it to widescreen. You can put filters over the video to mimic an old CRT TV, or you can sharpen the pixels to give it a more HD-ified look. I love this game and the collection of games is perfect. I especially recommend Shining Force 1 and 2 if you haven't played them. They are absolute hidden gems. Buy this game for your collection or to relive the classics!
Generally great selection of classic Genesis games, and effectively the best bang-for-the-buck value for Sega fans. However, two things brings the value of this collection for me: the input lag (where input lag is the time it takes for your gamepad input to actually register on the screen) was enough to make certain games annoying to control over their original versions (I own several original Genesis systems and cartridges). Particularly, Ristar was frustrating because there are areas and enemies that require tight timing to grab, swing, and dodge, and timing a wall-climb or even back-and-forth up a vine or pole was unnecessarily more difficult than on original hardware (including on my Sega Nomad). Worse yet was the timing of the mid and end of level pole swings. ... Worse yet was the timing of the mid and end of level pole swings. Ristar fans know that releasing the swing with precision and proper timing is crucial in these parts of the game. The interface set in a "90s bedroom" seems charming at first, but I quickly felt like it was too cumbersome. I also disliked the inability to configure your controller buttons on a system level. There are individual games which inherently let players configure buttons, but it's sad that we can't do it from the main menu for all games. This collection is generally worth it for the slower games and most definitely for the RPGs as they don't rely on precisely timed controls. Go for it if it's on sale in that case. However, if you are sensitive to input lag then reconsider this collection for a bit; it's a great collection of games let down by so-so emulation and a surprising lack of controller customization.
This collection has a well rounded selection of games. These games come from the SEGA Genesis 16-Bit Generation; you don’t get Phantasy Star 1 witch was on the Sega (Genesis/Mega Drive) in Japan only. Phantasy Star 1 was available on the Master System (8-Bit Generation,) in Japan, U.S.A., Europe. Phantasy Star 1 the Genesis version would make a nice addition to the other Phantasy Star games on the cartridge. This cartridge is still a good value and has Shining Force 1 & 2, and the Pre-Shining Force, Shining In The Darkness game. Super Thunder Blade is a good inclusion, and so is Kid Chameleon. Ecco The Dolphin is missing and so is Ecco The Tides Of Time. Ecco Jr. is not there ever. V. P. Chip or other racing games without that chip. Witch means no OutRun or other games such as Super Hang-On. Does have RISTAR a great platform game. Sonic The Hedgehog 1 & 2 are in the mix the 2 best selling games on the SEGA Genesis were platform games.Crusader Of Centy is Zelda clone that is not in the selection, but Beyond Oasis is there, and I am told it is a great RPG. Toe Jam and Earl games for the Genesis are both there and are exploration, action based games nice additions to the package.Columns III is a puzzle game and so is Dr. Robotics’ Mean Bean Machine so, SEGA put out a well rounded package.
First off, the selection of games in this collection is excellent. There are always a few titles that get snubbed in compilations like this, but what's here is great and serves as a solid representation of the Genesis library. If that's all you're after, you're set. Buy it and enjoy it.On the other hand, if you're looking for more than just old games running on an emulator, then there's not a lot here for you. Other similar compilations, such as Capcom's Mega Man Legacy Collections or SNK's Anniversary Collection, include extra material or play options that help present their games in a fuller context. These extras are pretty sparse in this release. Some of these games have alternate arcade versions that aren't included here and there aren't any concept art/promo ... Some of these games have alternate arcade versions that aren't included here and there aren't any concept art/promo material galleries or anything along those lines. Other than save states, there aren't any extra gameplay options, either. You can tweak the presentation, and there's a rudimentary achievement/challenge system, but that's it.If it sounds like I'm being harsh, it's only because these collections of games can be incredible when a little extra effort is put into them. Don't get me wrong, the selection of games here is huge and awesome and I'd still recommend it to most people. It's just a little disappointing that we're missing out on some of the other content that we've come to expect from these types of re-releases.
This, in my opinion, is a must own title for Genesis fans. There are a few key games I wish had been included with this collection but overall I feel it is well worth the money! This collection is full of excellent titles from the golden age of video games. I love the variety and the ability to play these games on modern hardware. One of the few collections games I’ve purchased and have been extremely satisfied and I believe anyone who owned/played a Genesis as a kid or is a fan of the 16 bit era of gaming will love this title as well.
Before you scroll past this ignoring it because the title sounded absurd to you since there are many, very good games on here like Sonic, Gunstar Heroes and so on, let me start out by saying as of version 1.0.2 there's a sizeable controller lag, joycons attached or not, pro controller, it doesn't matter. There's a good half second delay from press to action. It felt less noticeable in Shinobi 3 but it was very harsh in Sonic 2.Just to drive this in, I'm not nitpicking this isn't the controller delay you might see someone complain about from using a wireless controller, the lag is genuinely a 1/2 second from press to action.Making the RPGs the only viable games to play here. Because it's not gonna help in the platformers or the Columns. I have the PC version as well and I don't recall anything like this. So much for getting these games on the go right? :\ ArgIt's annoying to have to write this review because, this should be such an easy thing. There's been so many ports of these games over the years from the PS2, PSP, Wii, PS3/XB360 etc but the Switch version at the very least? The lag ruins it. The collection has been out a while too and I'm not sure this is getting fixed.Other negatives are, the emulation isn't 100% if you're a snob for that kinda thing. Some sounds are just off sounding. Hitting a sign post in Sonic 1/2 is weird sounding, as is the 1up in Shinobi 3.It's missing Sonic 3 & Knuckles as well, a very, very notable omission given how it's in many other ports. As for the games, I mean there's a lot of great games here. Sonic 1 & 2 are great, as are the Streets of Rage titles (even lets you play the japanese version of 3!), Phantasy Star 4, Shining Force 2 and so on.Just agh, the controller lag seriously ruins this port. As I said it's been out a while so I don't think they're gonna patch this out.
This is the third Genesis compilation in as many console generations, so it's a real shame to see extras and controller guides that were included in previous versions removed and replaced with an unnecessary interactive menu screen. Old men like me remember when Phantasy Star II was packaged with a comprehensive hint book, so omitting any kind of game or controller guide seems simply lazy. Good luck divining the technique system in PSIII without online help!Thankfully, button functions are made clear in the options menu for most games, and the better games in this collection don't require consulting a manual. The previous edition contained an unlockablesSpace Harrier arcade game, which is far, far superior to the Genesis Space Harrier II.Given that Sega supposedly now owns the rights to the Technosoft developed games, the exclusion of Herzog Zwei and any of the Thunderforce titles is another disappointment. But, all faults aside, you definitely get $30 worth of Sega classics on this collection, so it's definitely a must-buy for Switch owners.Just let future anthology developers know that Noone wants to ever see the Genesis versions of Galaxy Force II or Super Thunder Blade again.
