Reference to Sennelier's PV19 Rose Madder Lake. I use a mixed palette as many do for various reasons. I chose this pigment from Sennelier because it does not dull down and have such a drying shift as compared to other brands and in particular Daniel Smith Quinacridone Rose. I use watercolor from Daniel Smith as well as others but for anyone looking for the my favorite lightfast smooth bright Rose color that can creates the most lovely and lively blends then this one is my go to. Creamy, sumptuous colors
I've been wanting to try sennelier watercolors for ages but the $ has always been a sticking point for me. As with any great quality pigments a little goes a long way. I've only been playing with these for 2 days but I forsee them lasting quite a while.What I'm not so happy about:- the paintbrush. When I first took the cap off the brush my heart sank, the outer rim of bristles had been pushed the wrong way. I immediately wet the brush and tried to reshape them with The Masters soap and I think most of them can be semi repaired but there are some that are still sticking out at a nearly perpendicular angle and I'll probably have to cut them off to be able to use the brush.- the pans aren't level. This really irked me, the box, otherwise decently constructed, is small, so naturally the pans of color are close to one another. The problem is some of them rest in their indent at an angle and rise above the rim, so when I place a couple drops of water on each to wake them the paint runs into other pans of color. This has been especially bad with the French Vermilion and Cinereous Blue. These pans will probably run out first if I leave them as they came because I keep having to blot them with a paper towel or dry brush to fix it.I expected more attention to detail from Sennelier.... Excellent colors and lightfastness!
The first thing I do when I get a watercolor set (and I've purchased many over the years!) is to do a Fade Test. I create two panels, one a Control that rarely or never sees UV light, and another for a Fade Test that will spend some time in direct sunlight, up to several days.The picture shows the results. (Disregard the extraneous black spots - my fault - I splattered and didn't want to redo the panels.) There is no noticeable difference in the exposed colors vs. the unexposed ones after at least 5 days in the sun. Note: I did wash/lifts on the right sides to see how the colors would lift out.I have previously tried a couple sets of watercolor brush pens and several of those faded within a couple days' exposure, making them useless. I'm very impressed by the quality of Sennelier watercolor paints! They rewet very easily compared to other watercolor brands I've used in the past—within seconds, I can already start painting! I'm thinking it's the honey that Sennelier uses in their paints, because I don't get the grainy, clumpy pigment from rewetting my palette the way I do with other paints, and I appreciate that a lot. I also love how vibrant the color is on paper, and how it stays like that, even after a few months of me finishing a painting. My true love of watercolors
I love my Sennelier paints. I have almost the entire line, collected over a few years now, with repeat purchases, so that should say something. And Sennelier's 21 ml tubes are a fantastic value. I also like that the smaller tubes are 10 ml instead of 5 ml as most brands carry, so even a small tube is a great value and will last a good while. A few of my favorites are Yellow Sophie, Helios Purple, Chinese Orange, Dioxazine Purple, Scarlet Laquer, Opera Rose, French Vermillion, and of course, Sennelier makes the best French Ultramarine. I bought a tube of Yellow Sophie because I had to know what it looked like. I was not disappointed. It's a gorgeous, clear, super vibrant yellow, and now essential in my world.... Show more

Sennelier Nesting Box Set Wonderful
I splurged and bought the 24 color Nesting Set after the holidays because I'd been seriously tempted throughout. I belong to the Society for Creative Anachronism and go to many medieval recreation events with the SCA. Not only my garb but my camp stuff and gear are constantly being upgraded to look more period - if not specifically, documentably medieval at least something that could be reasonably considered so. Wooden box sets for painting and illumination are very prized and popular. So when I saw this, I had to give it a try.The color of the wood is lovely, a rich rosewood sort of finish. The little hardware on the top box is a dark metal and very period looking. It'd probably pass muster for Civil War recreations too, and it also has a great elegance for ... It'd probably pass muster for Civil War recreations too, and it also has a great elegance for setting out in formal living rooms among traditional furnishings. The strap that holds the boxes together is well made and sturdy, webbing fastened with velcro. While I plan to replace it with a leather strip and metal buckle for SCA events, I'll keep that good webbing strap aside for when I'm not at an event because it's easy to open and convenient.The colors in the 24 color set are as well chosen as those in the 8 Mini that I started with. Plenty of choices for transparency/opacity, warm or cool versions of primaries, well chosen greens and violets and neutrals. It's a little quirky compared to other brands and the reds are fabulous. They vary quite a bit and include fluorescent Opera Rose, something that can give extra brightness as a glaze or even a main element. Lightfastness varies, as is usual for artist grade paints, so I kept the paper wrappers and noted it in my chart.All of the colors have good strong pigment load, smooth solubility and ease of pickup. I haven't tried their tube watercolors but trust those to be as good.The porcelain palette is good and solid, packed with foam under it and next to it. I kept it in its deep box with that foam padding since that protects it so well. The middle box only has the folded napkin in it, a small cloth embroidered with Sennelier on it. That might be handy for cleaning out the palette but doesn't fill its layer, so that middle box is good for my metallic gouache, kneaded eraser, maybe a small ruler, pencil sharpener, all those other handy oddments that accumulate. I might add dip pens and very short flat ink bottles as well later, there is extra space within the set for your added supplies of choice.Aside from medieval recreation, a set like this is something that won't disturb the ambience of a formal living room. I can easily imagine it set out on a coffee table with traditional furnishings and perhaps a bound journal or leather folder with paper. It would make a good object in a still life setup - and wouldn't take much to move the colors and tools in use out of it during that painting either.... Show more

Sennelier watercolors are lovely to use
I have been using Sennelier tube watercolors for several years in floral and bird paintings, I bought the 12+ 6 tray as an affordable way to try out the pans. Were I to select the colors I would not have included those made of multiple pigments as I prefer single pigment paints; also I am not sure of usefulness of both paynes grey and ivory black. That said, the paints handle very nicely and rewet immediately; they also layer very well. No quality complaints.The palette has room to add several more colors and has plenty mixing area, also the pan tray comes out to give even more mixing area.... Show more

These paints are very high quality and have the least amount of granularity compared to other watercolors Ive used like Kuretake Gansai and Daniel Smith. Not only are they smooth on paper but these pans seem to take to the water in a brush very well. The colors themselves are rudimentary and basic but blend well into natural tones so they have a wide range of use.One thing I will say if you are intending to buy from Sennelier are that these paints are best suited to layering techniques - and they do this very well. I have only been using watercolor on and off for about 3-4 years now so I'm by no means a skilled painter. But from the other products I've explored, the way I've seen Sennelier paints used by professionals, and my own personal experience is that they ... To me from the many many different types of PV19 or Sennelier's Rose Madder Lake is the absolute best for that bright quinacridone Rose color closest to an Opera yet lightfast. I have Daniel Smith's quin Rose PV19 and was suggested to try Sennelier's because DS version dulls down as it dries. My "permanent alizarin crimson" PV19 is from DaVinci and is meant to be a bit darker but I just can't believe the difference in my painting from switching DS version to Sennelier's. Thank you!
