80 assorted half pastel quality poor compared to full sticks
I really love the individual Sennelier full sticks, so I thought the 80 assorted half pastels looked like a great deal. I knew the half sticks would have a wider diameter than the full, but was ok with that as I could use some wider sticks to lay down color. I wanted to love this set. But the quality was inconsistent. A number of pastels were dry on the outside and crumbled, leaving huge messes everywhere. For half sticks, I am much happier with Richeson's sets, whose quality are more consistent. Also, there is no way to be sure which color is which in the Sennelier set. The box includes a listing of colors in no particular order that does not match the arrangement in the box. I like to know which is which in case I want to individually order a particular color. ... Some of the colors are nice, and I would have been happy to order them in the full stick if it had been clear which color is which.... Show more

A favorite!
Sennelier is one of my favorite brands of soft pastel. I use them throughout the painting but the softness makes great accents or marks at the end. The pigment is also intense! This is a nice little set to either get started or just for a few more accent pieces.... Show more

A review of the whites
I've tried white, intense white, and iridescent white. I wanted whites to highlight and to mix other colors to brighten the color. Sennelier is definitely buttery and creamy. I use pastels on cardboard, and I find that Sennelier whites leave chunky trails behind.Between the white and intense white, it is not a huge difference. However, the intense white is of more cooler tone. I would actually stick to the regular white for portraits or landscapes. The iridescent white is basically a pearl white-- almost like a sheen of a makeup highlighter. Don't expect to brighten/highlight with it. It just adds a glimmering effect.Overall, great product, but I think it is overpriced. Also, because it is creamy, you will use it up very quickly.... Excellent Pigmentation and Coverage
It's good to start with a kit of Senneliers, and then add individual colors as you need them and develop. Otherwise they do get expensive, and the kits are way more economical per pastel. I immediately remove the labels and snap them in half. The only "con" I've had is that occasionally a pastel will be shattered during shipping. It's fine if there is only minor breakage since I break these down myself. Excellent coverage when using sanded paper. Rich pure pigment. No worries about any toxic ingredients added. I also recommend blocking in your initial painting with a lower cost pastel like Prismacolor, then building up the color with Sennelier on top. These are expensive but it's like anything, you get what you pay for.... Show more

Excellent product
You can't go wrong with Sennelier. It rolls onto the surface. Make sure your surface complements high quality pastels. I advise not to go cheap with art supplies or it will show. Colors are vibrant! Love all of the Sennelier pastels!... Show more

Five stars even with some imperfections
For the amazingly low price Blick charges for the 120 half stick Paris Collection, you get about 100 different colors of creamy soft, intense, beautiful pastels in a range that will work for a wide variety of subjects - landscapes, seascapes, still life, portraits, anything. Sennelier is of course a brand used by professionals, but this set is also great for beginners ready to move from inexpensive brands to the "real thing". Just remember a much lighter touch is needed with these ultra soft sticks! It would also make a fantastic plein air set for someone who already has a studio collection. The real utility of these pastels is in the final layers of a painting, to lay in the beautiful, lush colors over your underpainting and watch the painting come to vivid life. ... However, the set isn't perfect. You really don't get 120 distinct, usable colors. There are about 12 pairs of nearly identical colors, and about 8 pastels that are unusable on regular pastel papers (Mi-Tientes, Strathmore Pastel, Fabriano Pastel) because they are rock hard, even after sanding the entire pastel. They are just barely usable on sanded papers. But, even with these imperfections, it's still a set of 100+ luscious, top-of-the-line pastels for a bargain price. Thanks, Dick Blick!... Show more

Get Half Sticks, Not Full
No question, Sennelier has a tremendous range of colors that glide on smoothly like butter. My art teacher recommended I purchase the Paris Collection in order to get a nice selection of 120 half-stick colors. I thought she recommended this to give me the most color selection for a lesser price than the full sticks. While that is true, she had an additional reason. She told me that the full sticks are too crumbly, plus they have wrappers that need to be removed in order to be able to use the whole stick, not just the tip. You run the risk of the crumbling when you try to remove the wrappers, plus they tend to crumble when just trying to apply them to your painting. You run the risk of the crumbling when you try to remove the wrappers, plus they tend to crumble when just trying to apply them to your painting. My teacher said the half sticks don't come with wrappers and for some reason (a special coating maybe?) don't crumble nearly as bad. Since I didn't understand the crumbling issue, I had ordered several individual full sticks, so I could choose my colors, rather than take what came in a set. I returned the full sticks and purchased the Paris Collection as I was told to do in the first place. As long as you're paying for lessons, you should listen to your teacher. My bad!... Show more

I am building up my pastels and these are a great choice.
I had the complete set and have used them with great results. Love the color saturation with not as much dust as some pastels. I bought this set for a friend who is a beautiful painter and wonderful friend. She is my driver to all classes with Kay Witt whom we both love as a person and teacher. We are learning so much from her!... Show more
