Best single unit surround sound system.

This sound bar is incredible! Sounds great! Lots of volume and clarity. Ambeo is fairly good for 3D audio processing. And this is coming from someone who is using DIRAC in their vehicle and their main home theater room. You will need a separate sub for this soundbar. Yes, this will not be a replacement for AVR home theater set-ups. We use this soundbar in the bedroom paired with a REL T5/X 8 inch woofer. If I had buy the sub over again, I would use a SVS 3000 mini. Keep in mind that this sound bar is not going to really give you true 5.1.4, but it does an outstanding job of trying to do it. So if space is a limiting factor for choosing this over a true AVR experience, this would be the one to get!

I was (and still am) unable to connect the Ambeo Max to my home wi-fi network. That meant that I couldn’t update the device pre-use which meant that I wouldn’t be able to use the (very helpful) Sennheiser Sound Control app. Fortunately I had an option to use a run of Cat 6 cable to hard wire it into my router and that eventually solved my problems. However, getting that done involved a 90-minute call with a very knowledgeable (and patient) Sennheiser tech support person to sort out the issues. Everything worked out in the end, but I spent a couple of frustrating days getting there. That’s the only reason I’m giving the product 4 stars instead of five. This simply shouldn’t be happening with a product at this price level. As for sound, it is head and shoulders above any other soundbar based system I’ve ever heard. Out of the box it does have the characteristic Sennheiser sound signature—“warm” with a rolled-off top end. However, if that’s not to your taste, you can adjust any or all of the six presets built into the remote to something more to your liking. While device does go quite deep on bass, I found that I needed to hook up a Klipsch wired subwoofer I already owned to get a true movie theatre-like experience. With that in place, the result when playing an effect-heavy movie like “Top Gun Maverick” is pretty spectacular. The unit will reveal any defects in the audio tracks of the source material played through it. There is a big difference in sound quality between content playing in two-channel stereo and content using more modern codecs like Dolby Atmos. I’m not sure this soundbar would beat a perfectly set up five/seven/ten discrete speaker high end home theatre system, but it gives a good account with a wide soundstage and convincing separation between sound elements. If you are streaming video content from various platforms, be sure to check your settings to use the maximum possible bandwidth, otherwise the Ambeo won’t be able to perform at its highest level.Music also works well through this soundbar, although the best overall sound profile will probably be a bit different than the one for video content. Once again, customizing the “Music” preset on the remote control can address this issue.Overall, the Ambeo Max is a technological triumph—once it is correctly set up. Do your homework in advance about the steps involved and be prepared to put some time into getting the unit configured properly. It can be a frustrating process initially, but the end result is well worth the effort.

Hassle free, amazing sound.

I purchased this item a few months ago and would highly recommend. For context, I moved home and didn't want to house an av receiver/ speakers etc.The initial set up in the app was clunky, had to use an ethernet cable and reboot device and the app multiple times, took 2 hours, the actual process is 5mins. Once it was done it functions fine. The sound is awesome, I demoed several soundbars, and was reluctant to change from my av receiver, this was the only one that I could justify. The guys at RS Manchester were great, set it up and accomodated a number of scenarios (atmos demo disk, blu ray scenes, music, sub vs no sub). The virtual speaker effects are not quite equivalent to physical speakers, and when using isolation test tones etc it cant hide this, but the ... MoreI purchased this item a few months ago and would highly recommend. The absence of a separate sub is not an immediate problem, any other soundbar I have heard cannot compete. My personal preference is to have a sub, but could argue one isnt needed.Music sounds great. One of the massive benifits is it just works, and the family can use easily, when compared to the av receiver setup constant faff.

Loved Everything But the Aesthetics
4 June 2023

I absolutely loved this sound bar and purchased at seventeen hundred dollars. It filled my living room, measuring 30' x 15', and the sound was so crisp. Dialogue had never sounded better. Music sounded amazing. I didn't quite get the consistent surround sound effect when watching action movies.Ultimately I returned this because of the overall aesthetic, or lack thereof, of the sound bar. It was the combination of overall size, bulk, and lack of styling that made it unappealing to look at. I would have gladly paid the price since the quality was top notch and the sound produced was a dream. But in the end, I needed it to be pleasing to the eye as well, and this was just kinda monolithic.Maybe I will come back to this for a dedicated movie/gaming room, but in our ... MoreI absolutely loved this sound bar and purchased at seventeen hundred dollars. The Ambeo max can replace your whole sound system.
10 November 2022

This soundbar has really impressed me with the sound quality and immersion. I bought it to replace my aging surround sound system which consisted of a receiver and a 7.1 speaker setup. I choose the Ambeo Max cause I wanted something which could truly fill the room with sound, and so far I've been very happy with switch. It really does sound awesome. The Ambeo effect, which is customizable, is really cool and is especially impressive when watching Atmos content. I would say compared with my old setup, this sounds more cohesive - more like an overall soundfield rather than sound coming from a series of distinct speakers. I appreciate that it can do this by itself, without multiple separate speakers.Regarding bass: I have been happy with the level of bass and bass ... MoreThis soundbar has really impressed me with the sound quality and immersion. I love that it has an output for a sub - I still have my old dedicated sub and I'll probably end up hooking it up to see the difference. I would say try it without a sub to see how you like it, if you think you need more bass, you can always add one later. One small thing I like is the little screen in the front. Much easier to read when changing inputs or sound mode than a series of dots or something behind a mesh.Right now I have my Xbox Series X plugged into the Soundbar, then the soundbar to the TV. The TV and Xbox say it's passing through 4K HDR and Dolby Vision.Setup was a bit tricky/wonky at first between with the app and is probably the only con. I plugged the soundbar into a lan internet connection and that helped it to pull down the update. After that it's connectivity has worked great. I'll also mention that with my 2017 TV (arc, not earc) I sometimes have to be careful in the order in which devices are turned on/off otherwise there won't be any sound/picture. Also, this is a big, heavy unit. Make sure you have space for it and possibly some help maneuvering it into place. Temporarily I've placed my TV stand legs on 2x4s to lift it up, in the future I will wall mount the TV.

I’ve owned the Sony HT-ST1000 for 5 years, so when it started glitching I needed something comparable or better to replace it. Considered the Sonos Arc but after reading the reviews of the Ambeo, decided to splurge. First off, this thing is massive and heavy - if you don’t have a sturdy piece of AV furniture to put this on top of like we do, please get the wall mount. Given the size and the way the speakers are angled especially the upfiring ones this is best suited for wall mount TVs…this is won’t work well for stand mount TVs. Getting this connected to our Wifi via the Google Home app was a little twitchy but got on eventually and downloaded a firmware update. Getting this connected to our Wifi via the Google Home app was a little twitchy but got on eventually and downloaded a firmware update. The calibration process using the included microphone is absolutely essential - we did it once when it arrived and again when our subwoofer (an SVS SB-1000 Pro) arrived and it makes a huge difference. To be honest it did a great job without the sub but the sub really rounds out the lower end, especially noticeable on music. On Atmos content it is sublime, simply the best sound system we have every owned and that includes discrete 5.1 systems with wires everywhere and separate speakers. For TV content we keep it on Neutral processing and use Movie and Music settings as necessary. We keep the sub set around 50% volume (-25 dB) and that seems to be a good balance. We push content through an Apple TV 4K and Atmos encoded music sounds just as good as video content…this thing can handle anything you dish at it, if you can afford the price of admission.

The best/worst product

This is the best standalone Soundbar period. Sound would be a 5 star. BUT one major simple flaw destroys this product, the Bluetooth. The reviews are spot on about the sound but only a few makes mention of the Bluetooth flaw. I was willing to overlook a lot of issues initially, I even purchased the Geek Squad protection because I planned on keeping this as my long term speaker. This was the solution that I was looking for. I already decided I just wanted to clear the clutter of my 5.1 setup and didn't want to add more speakers, so I knew what my expectations were. I even bought a Sonos Arc at the same time to compare.First off, it took me about 20 tries to calibrate. During this process, I also started noticing a crackling sound. I thought it was the speakers but ... MoreThis is the best standalone Soundbar period. Sound would be a 5 star. BUT one major simple flaw destroys this product, the Bluetooth. I thought it was the speakers but I believe it's the speaker housing itself. I think with all the heat that it generates, the housing contracts and expands causing the unit and components within to generate those sounds. I was willing to over look that. the AMBEO effect is so atmospheric which the Sonos Arc cannot compare. The AMBEO also has so much sound control flexibility with its EQ and you can get it precisely to how you want it to sound. The only thing that it will not give you is that specific discrete sound coming from the back, but I did not miss it at all. Height and sides with movies were excellent, and I have a lot of clutter in my space. With all that being said, the major issue is that the bluetooth connection is useless. The first few days it was ok. But after that it would not connect. I tried re-pairing, re installing the app, turning the unit off and on and it would not find the AMBEO. Only after I started unplugging and plugging it back in, then it would reconnect. You need the app to have control of the eq and sound functions which also includes controlling your subwoofer. Believe me, the app is crucial in tailoring your sound.Even with the Geek Squad warranty, I'm returning it. I can't be lugging this unit back and forth to have it repaired. I do not want a replacement because the batch of AMBEO sound bars that is at the store I purchased from will probably have the same bluetooth issues.Compared to the Sonos. Though I prefer the Ambeo, the Sonos Arc's sound appears to come from the TV screen, it's vertical height is better. The Ambeo, when listening to music and heavy dialogue scenes makes you notice that it is coming from the bar.The Sonos music performance is way better and that's even without a sub. I listened to the Eagles Hell Freezes over DVD in PCM mode, Natalie Merchants Tiger Lilly CD and BJ Thomas's Living Room Sessions CD. Way better on the Arc, both in terms of fidelity, height and width. Again, coming from the Ambeo, the sound comes from the bar. I was willing to make that sacrifice because I have a dedicated 2 channel stereo. If you are willing to expand, go for the Sonos. Since I'm keeping the Sonos I will be purchasing a sub and surrounds. So sad to see the Ambeo go. It is a truly, I believe home theater experience single Soundbar speaker. I tried it with my KEF sub and it was awesome. You'll have to decide if you are willing to put up with those flaws, but I suggest getting the Geek Squad protection. Also, Sennheiser no longer have the remotes in stock. The remote though only for basic controls comes in handy for volume changes and mute because when you use your phone, you will have to reconnect with the app just to do simple volume changes. I also do not know how much longer the Ambeo will be supported since Sennheiser I believe was bought out. Hopes this helps those who are interested.

Unmatched Detail And Fidelity For A Soundbar
20 July 2021

I keep things simple, with my new 65 inch LG C1 OLED mounted and connected via eARC to the soundbar, my PS5 connected to the TV, and all other content comes out of the TV (Netflix, Disney+, Vudu, Prime, Tidal).Best song I've heard so far on this beauty is Riders On The Storm (atmos mix) by The Doors. The Tidal app on the LG TV is a little glitchy, but it does output Dolby Atmos to the bar. Y'all have to check out the Atmos on that song, the rain storm is heard all around! And the voice/instrument separation is exquisite. I have noticed that with Dolby Atmos music, usually the Movie setting on the Ambeo sounds better than the Music setting. For all other music, the Movie setting adds to much echo/reverb so I stick to Music setting. When playing Final Fantasy 7 ... MoreI keep things simple, with my new 65 inch LG C1 OLED mounted and connected via eARC to the soundbar, my PS5 connected to the TV, and all other content comes out of the TV (Netflix, Disney+, Vudu, Prime, Tidal).Best song I've heard so far on this beauty is Riders On The Storm (atmos mix) by The Doors. I can hear the characters Barret and Tifa right just behind my left/right shoulders as the walk behind me in the game talking. For video games on the PS5, the Neutral setting sounds best. The best movie I've listened to so far was that new movie Tomorrow War, the sound mix is really cool. Can't wait to watch the other reference Atmos films. The live action Lion King and Alladin movies were also amazing. I could hear the bugs chirping and buzzing all around the air in Lion King. During Alladin, the coolest part was in the Cave Of Wonders, I felt like I was in the cave with them and the sound of the gold coins during the commotion of escape was surreal.I still need to test out 4K discs on the PS5, I have the Kingsman collection so that'll be first.

Your new subwoofer with the soundbar.

This sound the way they advertised that you won’t need the subwoofer? I can tell you, you will defensively need one! The sound is crisp, it better be for this much$$$ Another annoying issue is that keeps getting disconnected from my TV I have to go and keep switching from TV speaker to the sound bar. And it’s random so it’s not like it’s every time I turn on TV I have to do it but it does it so much that it becomes very annoying. For example my kids or wife never watch TV with the sound bar on, because you need to go into into settings to switch tv to sound bar . I wish there was bass adjustment, nevertheless be prepared to spend more money because you will need a subwoofer.
