This mic delivers an unmatched presence and tone across the frequency spectrum, reproducing vocals with punch and clarity even in the midrange area, where SM58s tend to get "quacky". I tested one of these against its nearest rival, the ubiquitous SM58. I found the e835 a little more natural sounding than the 58, with a higher frequency presence lift and a more open, less confused lower-mid/upper-bass. I was also after mics that would work well for presenters/Q&A panel members, who naturally stay more off-mic than singers tend to. The e835 still sounds respectable at 30-40cm off-mic and is just as forgiving as being off axis as the 58. Not sure about the durability compared to the Shure, which is legendary in this respect, but I would say that the e835 is certainly built to last. Overall, for a low cost mic, I’m very pleased with the e835s (I now have 6).

Color me impressed!

After reading others reviews of this and other Sennheiser vocal mics I decided to buy one. I have used Shure 58's and Beta58's almost exclusively but also have the Shure KSM8 that I've been impressed with. This microphone is $ vs the KSM8 that is $ and it is every bit articulate, clear, and full-bodied. I am a baritone but sing 70-2000's rock, metal, and a lot of Ozzy. This mic is fantastic for my vocal range and allows me to sing naturally without having to force myself to drive my voice in the mix. For an economy vocal microphone you cannot go wrong with this mic period.

Great mic
9 April 2019

Our church had a mismatch assortment of mics. I couldn't get a good mix of the vocals since each mic was different and not the best quality. We purchased 4 Sennheiser e835 mics a little over a year ago for our lead singers of our small team. They were great, as good and actually better than the Shure mic we originally had for our Worship Leader. Our team has since grown in both the 1st service and 2nd service team. I replaced a couple of the mics I thought were good ones with the ones from this latest purchase Sunday morning and the vocals were so much better with these new mics, better than I had anticipated. I can't wait till one of our singers returns to see how much crisper his voice will be with his new mic. So I got back into making music in my mid 50s. Never got past grade 2 piano. Had a voice in my teens let it lapse to Karaoke. But… Was working away from home. Bought an electric guitar and started to play and sing. Took lessons in both. Bought a Boss AccoustiSinger amp and an E835. What struck me was how the improvements in my voice translated perfectly through the mic. Every nuance. Yes a few flaws, but each tightening, tone, projection, precision… they became real. While there’s very much more expensive mic’s out there, this captures clarity, range is extremely easy to use… you also get to manage the sound field and can control the kick in of harmonies. It becomes an instrument in its own right. Sennheiser is a trusted name. At this price point, you buy more than ... MoreSo I got back into making music in my mid 50s. Never got past grade 2 piano. I'm all the way in with Sennheiser!

I love Sennheiser microphones! I used to use the Shure SM 58, but found out it sounded to my ears, wooden. I have even used the MD 46 with very satisfying results. Then I discovered the E-835. The difference was night and day. I love the transparent sound on the mids and high frequencies are crisp and clear on this microphone. I use them exclusively for my remote interviews using my Mackie gear and does the job on my Focusrite 2i2 3rd generation audio interface for my studio work. For under a hundred dollars you can't go wrong and you won't have "buyers" regret. after use buy and use it. This is my latest purchase and when you get yours you'll hear what I mean.

Once again, depe4nds on your usage...

I've been using the Sennheiser E-Series from back since they made the "3's". I am < gasp> a karaoke host amongst other things and I have been using the E-310s (or was it E-315) since they came out. Different frequency response than am SM-58 or an AKG or an MXK ribbon or even an Astatic. For the purpose however I haven't found a better mic. I've done karaoke in the rain and weddings on the beach with them and they've been dropped on more surfaces than an OtterBox (tm) would handle and you can pick 'em up and keep singing and the audio guy (frequently me) won't have enough "pop" in the sound when it hits that it would damage even a cheap speaker. Low handling noise., A mic is a tool just like a screwdriver or ,more like a chef's knife.. Low handling noise., A mic is a tool just like a screwdriver or ,more like a chef's knife.. If you know how to use one properly you can do great with almost whatever tool you have. If I'm doing a song in karaoke with three drunk chicks who can't sing towards the mic I'll use my SM-58s and try to avoid feedback and it'll sound pretty good. The AKGs are very crisp on the high end but they have lots of handling noise. The Astatic is a powered mic that will pick up an ant fart from 10 meters. The MXL is also a powered ribbon mic that has a very warm sound and a classic look (and is VERY crisp with all vocal frequencies that I have tried it with.)Bottom line: For "general" use, I'll put the Sennheiser E-series against the Shure SM's for a variety of purposes. Those are the two best I've encountered for general "abuse it almost daily" use. Astatics are the next biggest bang for the buck (imho). However if you want to go top-notch and you'll never have to worry about using it on a beach or at a wedding reception then get something old-school.... the word "Blue" comes to mind... But I'd rate the whole Sennheiser E-series a 5/5 for general purpose indoor/outdoor use with high durability, frequency response, little-to-no handling noise,Rock on, mighty warriors!

Review of Sennheiser E835 Dynamic Vocal Mic
12 July 2024

This mic sounds really good out of the box. I’ve even tested it out in a vocal session in a noisy flat and the off axis reduction did better than I expected. Obviously it won’t reduce everything but does a good job at it. I would also recommend this for someone who has a deeper voice. Great value for money in my honest opinion.

Solid, and it's coming through in a voiceover pinch
1 January 2020

I need a mic preamp to use this (and all other stage mics) for voiceovery, but ntil that gets here, the E835 a few inches away through a pop-filter is turning out great voice samples. Much less finicky about other noises than the AT2020 condenser I got. I'm not in a band, but I have dropped it. schlepping my booth. . That stage ruggedness does come in handy. Thru a loz- hi-z transformer and instrument jack in the Scarlett interface, it gives a little more volume and less noise (the interface is not top-drawer in the preamp). .When the dbx286s gets here I'll run it against the AT2020. Might be all I'll need....sounds smooth and not painfully-crisp.....just righ for a polished souind.

Extremely reliable and accurate sound capture. Attractive, low profile handle and grill. Durable mic element and very durable finish - this looks great after a long life of varied usage. This mic has worked well for on-stage performance, public address, home studio recording, computer speech recognition, and ham radio transceivers, and it has sounded good every time. Mine looks brand new after many years. Substantial feel and feels good. I have performed specific A/B comparisons with similar products, some costing much more, and it compares best and beats the rest, including, for example, way better than the Heil PR-20, costing half again as much. The Sennheiser e-835 is an excellent value.
