Sennheiser HD 820 Over-Ear Closed-Back Headphones (Black)
The new reference for closed headphones. Thanks to its unique damping structure, the HD 820 headphones sound surprisingly open while attenuating both external noise and headphone sound leakage more effectively than open hi-fi headphones. The curved glass ear cup cover reflects sound that travels outside the ring elements to a rim-like damping material, rather than back to the earphone element or the listener's ear. The soundscape of the headphones is incredibly realistic and natural. It excellently highlights the various parts of the music, whether it is distinguishing different instruments and sounds or even mistakes in a track. The listening experience is further enhanced by the microfiber and handmade ear cups, which fit the head ergonomically and enclose the ears well. The durable and comfortable headband is also very pleasant. It includes a specially manufactured damper, which significantly reduces frame noise, allowing the listener to focus even more on the music. Designed and manufactured in Germany.

So far I was impressed with what they can do. I will say that the sound is clean in a headphone like this. Definitely need a Good amp and Dac to drive the headphone. I am running these on a S.M.S.L combo and has plenty of power to drive them. Look and feel is nice not going to blow your mind.Soundstage is tough cause it’s trying to be a open back in a closed back design. But give it credit for them trying something different. I still think the sound they produce is quality for price.Recommend you purchase a custom cable to get the proper length cable comes with it is way to long.

hd820 running through my topping dx7 pro. it powers them just right on low gain and high gain pushes them much further. but volume is not all, the level of detail from this headset is freaking amazing. i have absolutely zero complaints from this headset. the feel really well built. they fit great on my head and best of all my wife can appreciate listening to these for her music. i have gamed on these and i have no issues at all i can hear the enemies excactly where they so much that it feels like im cheating. lol. i know its not a gaming headset but if its conforteable than so be it. my music lvl has been brought up to a whole different stage. i have zero regrets about buying this.

The HD820 is one of those pieces that you have to try to believe! The sound is more open than many open headphones. You realize that the sound is a bit more closed if you compare it with the Hifiman HE1000 series, the HD800s, Meze Elite or any other that is characterized by having a huge soundstage. The resolution, dynamics and speed is on par with other $3K and $4K in most cases. You need a powerful amp for the entire frequency spectrum to do its job.A great buy for its price.

One of the best sounding closed-back headphones. The imaging is one of the best you will get for a closed-back headphone. I haven't heard a closed-back that has beaten this headphone on soundstage yet either. For gamers, this could be your endgame headphone. You will be very immersed in your gaming sessions. You will know exactly where object sounds are located with these headphones. Those snipers will only have one or two chances to snipe you before you locate them by sound :)Music lovers, this headphone has the details as well. There is not much bass, but just enough. For my preference, it is more than enough. Combo this with a good amp. It needs power to draw out it's full potential. Feed it good clean power and you will get good results.I ran into an issue ... Paired with my Marantz amp and the sound is nothing short of amazing. I'm used to using Bose (QC45) and Sony (WXM-004) Bluetooth headphones and while they are great for traveling, the HD820's are simply levels above in sound clarity. It's a whole new experience.
Actually I’d give these a 4.5 if I could, more why in a moment....Although not a dyed in the wool headphonista I’ve used multiple Sennheisers over the years and feel the broad overall tonality is familiar. I suppose I think I know their sound. These are without doubt the best Sennheisers I’ve heard to date. Over a couple of months with both a system comprising legacy Marantz CD17 signature and PM17 amp (for the quarter inch jack), and a Chord Mojo (adapted to 3.5mm output via a curious but very effective Millso adaptor for the gaming market).Through either system the ‘820s sound super-detailed without resorting to any obvious brightness. They are almost obsessively well mannered with every music I’ve tried. CD after CD have revealed countless details and subtleties that have been hidden before. They seem especially good with reverb and fine detail. My usual audio system is fully active ATC, so the unexaggerated neutrality of these ‘820s is very welcome and not to be underestimated. Imaging seems to be retained mostly inside of the glass outers, with only occasional studio effects creeping out further still. These ‘phones leave me with the impression of imaging to the inside of my skull. Bit weird perhaps but there doesn’t seem to be any hyped-up spatial exaggeration. If these headphones were clothing, they’d be the best made to measure suit from Saville Row you’d likely ever owned. The half-star caveat? On my head and ears they are very position and location dependent. I have to squish the big earcups onto the sides of my head slightly to achieve what I would consider the right tonal balance. Otherwise I actually find these a tiny bit bass-light, as if they were missing the last few dBs of presence in the low frequencies. I’ve not previously considered I might have a slightly skewed preference for “exaggerated “ bass (in the manner of Harman’s research), but I might yet explore one day if a mild low frequency boost is my own personal happy place for headphones. I happen to think most hyped-bass low frequency ‘phones sound like garbage anyway. To summarise these ‘820s feel like they’re built to last half a lifetime, and I shudder to think how much more you’d have to pay to get any meaningful sound quality improvements. Just make sure they’re right for you.In my opinion, Jack and Steve are pretty much the best there are out there for service, expertise and advice.....
Sennheiser truly saved their Best for Last!*The clarity is amazing! If you truly love music & want to know who an audiophile can be, give these a try!!! You'll probably not want to take these off (because now you're one too)! Both the HD 820 & the IE 900 are the BEST of the Last products officially made by [the original] Sennheiser during their 75th Anniversary!
Shopping experience was excellent. The product is outstanding, there is subtle difference in sonic quality between HD 800s and 820. Given this is a closed back, the experience is different. The build quality is amazing.
Sound field width and depth very impressive. Distinction given to all instruments and placement excellent. Detail that is brought out excellent. Timbre of instruments being listened to is excellent. Enjoyment of listening to music has been improved so much using these headphones with Sennheiser HDVA600 headphone amp. Guys at Richer Sounds were excellent to deal with, in my case Alan And Charlie in Glasgow. They both were very helpful in getting my purchase correct.
They sound great. Fit is great. the look is great. However, the 600-ohm wiring makes you turn your amp up almost 2/3rd of the way up to hear them aloud. My head amp is rated at Yamahas 120 watt RMS. My main power amp is a Denon 400 watt PCH.So if your system is beefy, they're great.
