The 9' Ugly Stick works great for a variety of fish. It is a medium action rod with a medium to fast action tip which gives you the flex needed to get the whipping action for long casts with plenty of power to handle large heavy fish yet light enough for smaller varieties as well. The 9' length gives additional casting distance. It would be nice if Shakespeare offered this rod in a 10' length as well. I would buy one for sure. Ugly Sticks offer great value and quality for the money. I own 2 of this model. I use this rod to fish for stripped bass, salmon, and big Lahontan Cutthroat Trout up to 20 pounds. Great multi duty rod.

The rod was really cooked! Iām very familiar with rod splines as I have built many rods in my day but this rod is just plain dog leg crooked. If I had seen this rod in person I would not have purchased it. It is a 6 1/2, 2 piece rod and it arrived in one piece in a 8 ft long tube open at one end and it fell out of the tube when I picked it up from my porch! Not sure if it could have been damaged or bent from falling out of the tube during shipping like it did for me all though I donāt see how that could happen with out breaking it. There was no packing slip with it. I purchased it for a friend as a gift but didnāt give it to him. Instead I went to Wallmart and bought another ugly stick that was not messed up to give him. Bought the rod before the price hike. Really liked it I caught a 30 pound black drum on the beach at Ft Pickens near Pensacola.Have since caught several medium sized reds with it. Ok, great! Great action for 10 pound line. Then last Friday at Dauphin Island throwing a 2 oz surf weight the rod broke (snapped) above the large first guide on the forward swing of the cast. I was somewhat shocked to say the least. That's never happened with me and this brand before. Love me some Ugly Sticks!Anyway, I have 2 more of the same rods.Might consider adding a little more backbone toward the butt of the rod.
Nice and compact. Not sure ifni like it more than telecoping stule but ot soes seem a lot stronger. Caught a nice 1.5 to 2 pound bass and it had decent play. Cast pretty well even thoughbi have heavierr line on it than it should. Need to make sure allmsections are on tight. A coue if forst cast top two sections went into the pond also... good thing lure didnt break off so i got it all back. Now i attach with eyes 90deg off then twist after putting together to makenaure its all snug. Reel seems to be pretty decent for price also.
I bought this last year but while I was putting line on it, realized it was heavier rod than what I needed at the time. So I put it back and just took it out today for some walleye fishing at Canton Lake. 5th cast out the rod broke at he next to the last section. It would still slip in over the ferrule but then it would fly off about every 3rd cast. So I wrapped blue tape around it to help hold it in place. Caught a fish after a few casts and it broke again. Nice theory, but poor quality from Ugly Stik.
I still can't believe how they can make excellent 2-piece rods (of which I own three), and then create this abomination. It's common to hear but I thought I'd have a different experience, but in the end, it's Ugly Stik that's failing here: the 4-piece rods do not hold together. No amount of cranking, twisting, or tweaking fix the apparent flaw, which is you will 100% end up casting the upper section after 10-15 mins. Reset and take your chances and it will 100% happen again. This rod is a failure and should be recalled, re-evaluated and refunded for all those of us who trusted it to be fit for use.
I've had a couple of these rods. They're nice. Durable and lightweight. They might not be the best but for my modest needs they're good enough.I do have a couple small complaints. The two pieces of the 5' UL model are not the same length. The thicker bottom part is quite a bit shorter than the narrow more fragile top. It's not a big deal when it's put together but when it's apart and I've got the two held together with velcro straps in the trunk of the car or the basement I wish they were the same so the more stout end would be right alongside the narrow tip. There's probably a reason why they don't do it that way but I haven't figured it out.

If youāre doing bobber fishing itād be worth it to step up to a light instead of ultra light IMO. Itās a bit heavier than similar rods Iāve handled but with it being a lighter power rod to begin with it isnāt something that bothers me.I do wish, however, that Shakespeare made a TWO PIECE 7-foot MH Ugly Stik GX2. If so, I wouldāve already owned 1-2 for Catfish and Carp. 7ā one-piece rods are just too difficult to carry in my small car and with bottom fishing I donāt need the extra sensitivity. If this rod ever breaks Iāll buy another one, for my needs itās perfect.
