The HG701 chain is a good compromise between price and quality. Having more and better coating than the HG601, results in more resistance to tarnish from adverse conditions. My experience has been that the HG601 will show tarnish spots rather quickly on the face of the links. At the 701 level, the chain remains shiny silver throughout much of its life. The specially shaped links work with the 11s HG cassette for smoother, quieter shifting, even under some load both up and down the cassette. The 701 retails about $10-15 less the top model, HG901, and since performance and wear resistance seem negligible between the upper two models, the lower price point equates to the better value.

Having been scammed by 3 fake "Shimano" chains from non-cycling eBay sites that only lasted about 1000km (measure by a Park Tool chain gauge), it was a relief to get back to a genuine Shimano Ultegra chain again. My history is getting about 5,000km out of these genuine chains. Do the sums, those fake chain, although a few dollars cheaper, actually works far, far more expensive over a year.

I’ve been using these on road and CX bikes for a couple of years and found them to be durable and smooth running. In summer I use a hot-melt wax and I’m winter an all-weather drip lube, and both work well. The quick link is single-use. I would give it 5 stars if they provided a re-useable link.

I am not typically one to bother with negative reviews as I am conscious that they just come across as bitter. However, in the circumstances I think this one deserves it.I typically replace chains every 4-5,000 km (when showing only small signs of stretch) to try and limit the wear on cassette. I am very particular with my maintenance, clean the chain every 200-300 km, and lube with a ceramic lube. However, this product snapped after 1,200 km. Sigma Sports refused to warranty the product on the basis that chains can snap under load - here I was thinking that is the exact function of a chain - to transfer load between the cranks and the cassette, but apparently the Ultegra chain is not suitable for this. Works as expected. I would suggest buying the tool for the quick link. It makes connecting it much easier. I also suggest removing the factory grease and using some MucOff lube instead. I did not believe this would make an improvement until I tried. Much quieter.
For racers with sponsor's , Dura Ace is king. For those of us who are serious riders and have to pay for our equipment Ultegra is the way to go. The HG701 lasts me 3 to 4 k keeping it clean and lubed and I have never broken one. The quick link works great, a big improvement over past generations chains. If you can drive out a pin with a chain tool (simple ) you can install it yourself.
The new chain runs smoothly as part of the new drivetrain system for the mountain bike, runs like new. I also replaced the rear cassette and front chainring and gave the rear derailleur a thorough degreasing and cleaning. I am very happy with the new chain. I’m not sure why a review for a new chain has to be at least 50 characters in length, shouldn’t have to be so involved.
Nothing to complain about with the chain, once the rear derailleur is setup correctly, this thing shifts very well. I was actually surprised that I could notice the weight difference between the Ultegra and Dura-Ace chains in hand; nothing wrong with that, it's clearly going to be the case.I switched to the Ultegra chain thinking that the solid links might make the chain quieter (like a quiet bike), however it hasn't made a difference jfyi. Will be heading back to Dura-Ace next time.
This was a replacement for the same original chain on my 2021 Trek Domane. Since I wax my chains, I eliminated the quick link and am using a Shimano chain pin. This was a simple process of sizing the chain and popping out the pin. These are great chains for Di2 drivetrains!
Got that chain for my bike and have put already ~500miles. It is very durable, with smooth transitions and excellent shift quality to the Shimano XT . Chain is quiet and comparable with the higher performance chains brings all the bells and whistles with reasonable price me very good durability. I am 6’2” 200 pounds and ride very heavy gears . Put this on my kids bike and works perfectly under load with power shifting . Strongly recommend . REI did great deal on the delivery , surprised me with the same day. For the other reviewer will recommend next time to go to a bike shop. This is a great product . It came with the connecting link as well.
