The main thing I hate about gravel riding is getting pebbles in my shoe. These do an amazing job at solving that problem while being ultra-light and even airy to boot. As someone with finicky feet, I usually stay away from shoes with only a single BOA, but somehow the lacing pattern of these does a great job of reducing the usual pressure points that single BOA shoes create. My only gripe is that the Orange is more Copper, but oh well. The cleat adjustment range is pretty small compared to a lot of other shoes though, so beware if you're at the extreme ends of your current shoes' adjustment.

I am 5'5", 160 pounds, and typically wear an 8.5 (slightly wide). I ordered the 42 as per sizing suggestion, as I have a pair of entry-level pair of Shimano RP-1s at the same size. My foot length measures 25.7xx cm, which puts me in a 41. However, I ordered true-to-size as per suggestions and matching my RP-1s.I have roughly .75" from my longest toe to the end of the shoe. The width fit well along with the heal lock-down. I personally am not fan of having a lot of space at the end of the shoe. The build quality seems high. Hoping I can either drop down to a 41 or find another pair that fits closer to my toe.

I purchased these when the XC902 wide were not available. Sole stiffness is solid but slightly less than the XC902. The one thing about this shoe that bothered me was that the opening for your foot was tight. For a wide shoe it seems like the entry into the shoe would be wide as well. A little snug sliding my foot in with an everyday cycling sock but I could not put my foot in with a woolie boolie sock on with the boa max opened. The toe box also fits slightly narrower than the XC902 and my pinky toe gets slightly squeezed. On the bike they are comfortable and get the pedaling job done. Color is meh....just because someone has wide feet does that relegate them to having to wear boring black shoes all the time?

Here’s the thing, the RX801 is probably the best value for SPD gravel riding and maybe XC. It’s very comfortable, ventilation is better than most shoes I tried (Leatt 6.0, various Recons, XC7xx and XC9xx series) and it just feels right. Compared to the RX600, it comes with better insoles with adjustable support, boa dials with micro adjustment in both directions and doesn’t have holes in the outsole which I think are weird. The reasons I still went with RX600 instead were:1. The tongue in RX801 created a minor hotspot on my instep.2. Both RX800 and RX801 aren’t as stable when walking due to a narrow position of the rubber knobs and tend to tilt inwards due to the lack of the outer side support, which is very dangerous. RX600 is not ideal either, but it’s better ... MoreHere’s the thing, the RX801 is probably the best value for SPD gravel riding and maybe XC. RX600 is not ideal either, but it’s better enough for it to not be a constant issue.Breathability, light weight, stiffness and pure comfort of both RX shoes is the best I’ve tried so far. Oh, and special edition color scheme is amazing in person. If the next RX802 fixes the stability issues, I’d probably upgrade just for the BOAs.US sizing is precise and identical between RX600, RX800, RX801 and XC702. EU numbers are a bit off, where 46 is US 11.2 whole others have 45 as US 11 or even 11.5
I found the Shimano sizing chart recommends one size larger than my usual fit. The sizing chart slotted me into a 47 based on my US size 12. I’ve always fit Euro size 46 (except Sidi size 46.5) so I measured my foot according to Shimano’s method on their web site. I measured 29 cm, a size 46 which they reference as size 11-11.5 US.The RX8 fit perfectly from the first time I slipped them on. The TPU lugs deliver a solid, non-slip grip on any surface you walk on. The sole is very stiff and as promised, efficiently deliver power to the pedals. My pedals are Shimano XT and the lugs on the RX8 are designed to fit the platform perfectly. I appreciate the dual strap design that simplifies removing the shoes. These shoes are very light and comfortable, I even use them for road rides these days. Great as Cyclocross shoes in dry conditions only as they don’t have toe spike capability.
I have ridden the original RX8’s for the last year and a half and while not perfect, they’ve been awesome gravel/xc/cx all rounders. These newer RX 801’s seem to pick up exactly where the older version left off. The heel cup hugs well, enabling you to loosen the boa if needed to let your feet wake up or adjust for any hot spots from over tight boa cord. The boas are way better on the 801s in that when you pop them open, they loosen the cord very easily where the older shoe was a bear to pull slack through the boa. The 801 also removes the elastic strap on the instep/inside of the shoe making it a lot easier to get them on and off without any compromise in snugness or security when they’re on. The soles are as stiff as I’d ever want and overall they’re pretty light. ... MoreI have ridden the original RX8’s for the last year and a half and while not perfect, they’ve been awesome gravel/xc/cx all rounders. These newer RX 801’s seem to pick up exactly where the older version left off. The soles are as stiff as I’d ever want and overall they’re pretty light. The insoles don’t do anything (even with Shimano “high” arch insert) to support my high arches so I had to use some custom insoles which make the shoe a little heavier, but far more comfortable and supportive for my feet. At sale prices, you’d be hard pressed to find a better shoe, as long as it fits your foot.
6K miles on my first pair, and now I’m onto my second pair. They are lightweight and stiff like a road shoe, yet lightly lugged like a XC shoe (no toe spike mounts though). Great for power transfer, light hike-a-bike, town stops, etc. I use these bike packing as my all-day shoe including in camp.Bi-directional Boa dial is awesome. You can precisely adjust tighter AND looser while in the fly. Many other shoes in this class only have uni-directional Boa.TPU sole is a bit slippery on slick/polished interior surfaces, but perfectly fine on concrete and dirt. I followed the size chart to the letter, wound up with a size 45. Upon receiving the shoes, the shoe was waaay too long. Like 2 sizes too long. It wasn't close enough to go "oh well" and deal with. At least an inch and a half of extra shoe. I bought these specifically due to having the 20% off coupon available and am really bummed to have wasted that savings on these. I obviously haven't used these enough to know, but I noted that the inside tongue rubs against your foot in a weird way since it subducts under one side and sort of "wraps" your foot. So there's only contact with the tongue on one side. At first it was quite painful to wear but that seemed to go away once the shoe "settled". So that may or may not be a problem. I wondered if that rubbing would cause blisters over time. My Bontrager shoes' tongue is a normal design and it feels natural on the foot, but with these it's like one side of the foot has extra pressure on it due to the design. Could be nothing, I'm not sure. More use would tell.I bought these to use when commuting and road-biking because i wanted to clip-in, but also needed the ability to walk easily. SPD SL cleats never seemed to offer much benefit and I only use SPD. These shoes seemed to have a really nice, stiff sole and clipping in/out was smooth even with the added tread. I was really happy with the look, the tread, and the stiffness. It almost felt like walking in a normal shoe. They did not feel heavy. Such a shame the sizing is so off that I can't use them.I really want to love these, but we'll see if I can get the sizing right. I'll give them another shot with a new size. These are pretty narrow as well, so if you have wide-feet don't even bother. They widen up a bit when you wear them but as someone with wider feet i could instantly tell these are very narrow shoes. More narrow than my bontrager cycling shoes of a smaller size.*Note: on every other website, these shoes come with cleats. REI doesn't seem to do that, not a dealbreaker but worth noting. Buy cleats if you need them. They did come with neat arch supports you can choose to use or not, i thought that was a nice touch.
Sizing runs a little short, though width is standard. The tongue is weirdly connected to the shoe's uppers on both sides, which makes getting into it a bit more work than is typical. That tongue arrangement also makes the shoe rather uncomfortable; sometimes I could fidget with it enough to make it reasonably comfortable -- but then, during a ride, I would always end up feeling it again. I want cycling shoes that "disappear,' meaning I don't notice them at all. These are not those shoes, at least for me.On the plus side, they are light, stiff, and nice-looking. But comfort rules, and these aren't comfortable for me.
As someone with a small but wide foot, it's rare that I find a pair of gravel shoes that fit perfectly right out of the box. Usually, I have to size up to get the fit I want, and then the shoe is sloppy in the heel. Well the RX801R Wide solved that! These things are so comfortable that my first ride in them just so happened to be my longest ride ever. No hot spots, no weird rubbing on the outside of my foot, and best of all no pebbles getting into my shoes. The cleat adjustment range is pretty small compared to a lot of other shoes though, so beware if you're at the extreme ends of your current shoes' adjustment.
