The carbon-reinforced midsole is the most important of these layers since it places the XC702 near the top of Shimano's stiffness hierarchy. This places the XC702 firmly into race-ready territory, with highly efficient power transfer and just a hint of forgiveness for increased utility when running over barriers or climbing steep embankments. Though it's not as stiff as the S-Phyre, the XC702 does feature a more robust complement of lugs, so it's better suited for navigating sloppy run-ups or trails on foot. The rubberized outsole also includes toe spike mounts for days when not even the lugs are enough. The upper is secured with 2 BOA L6 dials, letting you quickly dial in the fit.

I wear a 44 in pretty much everything, so I got a 44. Pretty true to size, maybe a bit more narrow and a bit more long than some 44s, but nothing that would make me say that they run small or big. The fit is almost perfect. A roomy toe box that you can close up as much as you want. I was thinking that I finally found a new show for MTB and gravel. But then I tightened them down, and you have to tighten them fully to get the top strap to make contact. I have a high/big instep, so I avoided the XC701 that people were saying the top strap cut into there instep, top area. The 702 is changed slightly to make it softer on the tongue and top strap, but for me at least the problem is still there. The shoe otherwise fits so well that I was tempted to just ride it and hope it ... MoreI wear a 44 in pretty much everything, so I got a 44. I got these shoes to replace an older pair of XC702's. They seem to be great shoes but to my surprise, this new model does NOT come with multidirectional Boa's like my old pair. This is very disappointing, especially in a race-level shoe. Being able to loosen the Boa on the fly during a race or in hot weather is critical. Just something to be aware of. The gap in $$ to the XC902 is a big one in order to get the better Boa's. That's a shame.

Like it says in the title, the red looks spectacular and the shoes seem well-made. Unfortunately, either there's a variation between the left shoe (fits fine) and the right shoe (tight in the toe box both in width and in height) or between my left and right foot. Sizes and widths vary for me brand to brand (I typically wear 11 wide for Merrells and needed a 45 wide for my Sidi cycling shoes) but my last pair of Shimano MTB shoes were a 45 normal and if anything, they're a tad too large. If I remove the insert from these, the shoe fits almost perfectly, but I lose the arch support. I guess I'll try them in a 45 wide in plain, old, boring black.

I have always worn Sidi MTB shoes, from Drakos to Dominator 10's. I had been looking for something different, so went with these after reading a few articles.Wow, they are impressive so far. I like having rubber between the heel & toe cleats. They are great for the rare hike-a-bike times. Unlike Sidi shoes, these do not loosen during rides. I usually put Solestar insoles in all my cycling shoes, but these are great as is - even better!
I have had three generations of the XC7 and really liked the 701 version. I currently have both the XC7 and the RC7 in this 702 generation and both are not comfortable on my big toes. The shoe material is harder or is not made with enough room above the big toe. Oddly, both shoes are worse on my right foot even though my left and right big toes are he same. I hope that I can deal with this. It's not bad if I keep my nail cut down as far as possible. Maybe the next generation will have the toe area more like the 701.
I have used the XC7 shoes for years with no problems. I decided to upgrade to the S-Phyres and immediately didn’t like the shoe. They hurt my feet after riding only 30 miles, so couldn’t imagine doing a big day in the S-Phyres. We had a short hike-a-bike and the bottom of the S-Phyres were completely shredded after only 30 days of use. I warrantied them and went back to the XC702 and noticed the difference immediately. I’ve been wearing them for 2 months now, and am super happy with the fit and feel. The bottom of the XC702 has ample sole coverage for the occasional hike-a-bike.
I use these for BMX racing. They feel very solid and secure on the feet/pedals. The BOA system is great to clamp everything down. The insole is comfortable, which is worth noting since I've bought other cycling shoes by other brands where that wasn't the case (and had to buy different insoles for comfort). Width was a touch tight upon arrival, but after a couple rides everything formed well around my foot. Overall, very psyched with these shoes.
2 years ago I got the 702s in a wide because I've been in a wide Shimano shoe since they came out with higher-end wide shoes. Their wide fits me well so, I don't have a reason to shop other brands. The 702s were a replacement for an XC7 I had for years before their demise. One main difference I saw was the shape of the toe box. The XC7s had a round toe box vs the 702's pointed toe box. At first, I could feel the difference in the shape of the toe box, but I didn't notice it after a few ride. I ride A LOT (3,200 miles mtb and 1,500 miles gravel in 2023) and the 702s have proven to be durable. Despite all the scuffs and cuts, they are fairing well.
this mid tier 702 seems to have the same BOA system and fit as the top line, but for two hundred less. fit is good. my feet are just a bit wider than most. I sized up a half cm. also this is the good type of BOA locks. they fully release when you pull the top. east to get out. some brands (splzd) use BOAs that just ratchet backwards, so it takes heeps of time to loosen the cables to get out.
I bought these because I have wide feet and currently use Fizik Tempo Overcurve R4 wide road shoes but wanted a pair for my gravel bike. I really wanted these to work but another problem that people with wide feet have is fat and large feet all around... The top strap dug into the top of my foot/ankle when I tried the shoes on. Had to return. If you have wide but not voluminous feet you should be golden!
