It has the most important features of the Twin power and Stella: the rigid Hagane body frame, super smooth rigid support drag, silent drive for smooth and low inertia cranking, and the MGL super light rotor and Ci4+ ultra light material - plus it is lighter. It is like the reel of the year winner, the vanford, on steroids - which lacks lacks the critical rigid support drag and hagane body which in the 5k size begins to matter due to reel flex and the demands of extremely fast and erratic fish. I cannot detect a difference between this and the Twin Power other than it’s lighter weight - and only the claimed feature that distinguishes themThis reel is so, so smooth and has a powerful feel despite the light weight. Very light and sensitive reel. There is no play in the handle whatsoever which really helps when setting the hook. Not to mention it's just a sexy looking reel.
The Sustain was the pinnacle of Shimano''s lineup when I was a kid. 25 years have passed so I decided to get 2. While I didn't expect them to make me a sandwich, I did find they were not the apex reel I thought them to be. First, the Sustain FJ does not include a reverse retrieve switch. I'm not a back-reeling angler, but I am use to the feature to let line out in a controlled fashion without having to open the bail or adjust the drag to pull off line. Another reason to remove a star is Shimano''s QC. One of the 2 reels was received with a bent bail wire which required adjustment for it to function 100% correctly, and required that I remove 2 adjustment washers so the line would lay level. Now for the good; the reel is visually striking, feels solid in the hand, and the retrieve is silky smooth. These are good reels but no better than my 20 year old Stradic reels that still perform flawlessly.
I believe it is an excellent reel for smaller fish, but comparing it to a Twin power that supports 55 lb drag was hilarious, each reel in its place, all are good for one type of fishing
Initially I was happy with my purchase until 3 months after using the sustain fj the drag become very sticky. I had a local reel repairer look at it and he said that the drag had destroyed itself internally and damaged the spool. He sent me some photos and I sent the reel to shimano. Shimano sent the reel back after repair and it still was sticky. Infact all they had done was change the drag knob which was perfectly fine. At the time I purchased this reel they retailed for $500, they have since dropped to $400 which is probably closer to what their worth. The store refunded my money (not this store) and I changed from 20 years with shimano to switching to daiwa certates. May of been just a one off but from my experience these reels are not up to a frequent snapper ... This is by far the best advancement in the sustain line! The mgl rotor paired to the solid aluminum body really makes this reel shine its like stradic and vanford had a baby and the twin power now feels threatened. Fishing twin power side by side with this makes me happy I didn't buy another twin power. Good luck and light lines.
Tough and light! Just reeled in a 45cm Pinkie during the weekend, nil issues 💪I purchased it on Friday night and called monday to say i need it the weekend and recieved it by Tuesday 👍👍👍
