Worked on charterboat that had these for seven years. 365 days a year operating. 80lb mono on the 50 and countless marlin, nice tuna to 100/150lbs, and nice wahoo to 50lbs or so...no problems, except on drag replacement in those seven years. The 30's were worked even more handling most of the bonito, smaller yellowfin to 40lbs and bull mahi to 40 also and wahoo in the same range. Also small marlin to 200. Did not have any problems.Had penn internationals on the boat before that, and their drags would need service every other marlin or yellowfin in the 60lb range and up. We would mark them with tape. In my experience reels are more than proven trolling.

All I reach for is Shimano

Shimano is the best. What ever price range size or strength that other reels are compared to,shimano outperforms each and everyone. All I use for bait, lake, surf deep, trolling and tuna. Shimano is number 1 with me.

Amazing price, with shipping to U.S.A.
26 January 2017

I have to admit I had some anxiety sending two grand to the other side of the world in hopes that I would really receive my 2 TI-130A reels. Well they arrived today in New Hampshire, USA, exactly 20 days after placing my order. The price (including international shipping) was better than any I found by a good bit. I also had some concern that these would be "foreign" models, but they came in U.S./English packaging with a Shimano USA warranty, and the packaging and reels look identical to what I've seen locally. I just finished spooling them up with line and I can't wait for tuna season to start! Thank you!

Awesome Reel
9 April 2019

I bought this reel recently after having trouble with my old surf reel just not getting the distance with my 12 foot surf rod. It did the trick as can now safely reach those spots where the fish are with out effort or getting wet. The line just runs smoothly of the reel making casting a breeze. It’s well balanced and a power house reeling the fish in out of the surf. Very happy with it And recommend it as great value for the price.

Great Reel for a Variety of Purposes
18 February 2019

I bought this reel for fishing in south Florida for sharks and marlin. I have it in the 50wlrsa and the 130 size. The reel is very powerful and has a comfortable handle. The two speed mechanism is very easy to shift and the low gear ratio proved to be very helpful when fighting a 300lb bull shark. We also used the 130 on a trip to Abaco and were able to land a 962lb blue marlin. It is a great reel.

Great dredge reel!
20 March 2019

Amazing dredge reel! My wife and I do a lot of marlin fishing in the Northeast with just her and I in the pit. We absolutely could not live without the auto stop feature. The auto stop really comes in handy when there are multiple hook ups and we both are busy. Its so easy to reach over and hit one button and then never have to worry about it again. These reels have so much power our dredges are up and hanging in a matter of seconds. Definitely a must have!

Qaulity reel.
8 December 2018

I have always bought Shimano reels for my fishing. I have just down sized my main reels to the New Aerlex xtc so I needed to down size my spod reels as I only now fish small syndicate lakes and gravel pits. The Shimano Aerlex 10000 was the perfect choice with its 3 distance line clips and new retrieve the same as the xtc. Qaulity through and through and would not swap it for any other reels on the market. Thanks again Shimano.

Review of Shimano Tiagra A TI80WA Conventional Reel
2 July 2022

Great website, I’ve been a Penn guy all my life. I switched to Shimano because it was easy to compare and contrast the two reels. I was in the market for new gear, and your in depth details about the characteristics of the function of the reel both reels made it easy to switch to Shimano. Thank you, guys and gals.

Tiagra 50 WLRSA, 80WA, and 130A
20 May 2019

I purchase the Tiagra 50wlrsa, 80wa, and 130a and all I have to say is that they are perfect. Beginning with the 50, I really like how it isn't so big so I can handle it very well. It is great for stand up fishing. With the 80, I am shocked by all the capacity, I was able to get a 300 yard dacron back and 700 yard braid Topshop. This makes it great for trolling, especially for Marlin. Wrapping up with the 130, the reel has a whopping 99 pounds of drag. Because of this, I can stop the biggest of fish the pull very hard.

Shimano's Tiagra series has set the bench mark for Big Game reels for a number of years, and now they're available here. The heavy anodising on the Tiagra makes these reels super resistant to the ravages of salt water, while the click stop drag quadrant permits more precise drag adjustments. The counterbalanced handle falls easily to hand when striking a fish and makes winding easier during the course of a long fight. It's rubberised tackiness' combats sweaty palms, which can be a problem during the course of a long fight, especially when fishing more tropical waters. One of the major rules of Big Game fishing is that the leverage created by an angler in a chair or stand-up harness with a big marlin, tuna or shark on the end of the line places an enormous amount of pressure on the tackle. That's why Tiagra's one piece frame is machine-cut from an aluminium tube to a thickness of 7mm. It's also why Tiagra has A-RB bearings, heavy-duty stainless steel gears, and a two speed shifting mechanism where the pinion and drive gears are continuously meshed. The series comprises ten models from a smaller 12 size right up to the largest 130 size, so there'll be something for you in the range, no matter your style.
