My purchase was a result of a lengthy comparative analysis of reels in that class. The Tyrnos came out very on top and offers very good specs and performance for the price. Easy choice and have been very happy with the reel.

Failed Tyrnos reel after 2 days of use, no refund

I bought this reel to take for a 1 week fishing Charter to the Swains. The second day into the fishing trip I had caught approximately 20 fish nothing bigger than 8kg mostly in shallow water (20m). The handle / shaft broke off completely while reeling in a 2kg Red Throat Emperor which was the majority of the catch over those 2 days. The reel was unrepairable after this putting a massive damper on my trip for the rest of the week, I ended up having to use my Calcutta that had much lighter line than the Tyrnos resulting in a great loss of fish. Very Disapointed. BCF returned my reel to Shimano for repair when I got back with the same reel repaired ( not replaced) which leaves me with no confidence to ever use this reel again in that situation where I have no other ... MoreI bought this reel to take for a 1 week fishing Charter to the Swains. Shimano Tyrnos 20 Overhead Reel

Quality reel, action is smooth. I love the bigger handle, way better than the small one that comes standard on a TLD series. Bought it for trolling so the weight isnt an issue, it'd be too heavy if you wanted to use it for bottom bashing all day.

TYRNOS 50's are beasts! Now I've got two! What can ya say about shimano gear?I've still got an old Aernos 3000 XT on a shimano squidgy spin 70(designed by Ian "BARRA" Miller) that I still use! Can't really fault shimano stuff.(watch out for cheap copies from China!)Freddy's have good prices on GENUINE SHIMANO gear and they packed it well for shipping too. Thanks Lads! A seriously good fishing reel. The lever drag is a joy to use. It's a great reel for the moey.

Too big too noisy for me.

I am not complaining about Ottos or shimano they were great and efficient, just the online buying process as the reel is not right for me. I should have personally shopped as I didn't know the item. Richard
