The all new Vanford is designed to become the ultimate finesse fishing reel with a super-fast start up. Replacing the iconic Stradic Ci4+, this reel is equipped with a range of technology upgrades that sets the Vanford apart. Still drawing upon a lightweight Ci4+ body construction, the new MGL rotor makes the reel 48% lighter to turn when compared to a standard rotor design. Micromodule Gear II and Silent Drive is featured in the new Vanford and the Hagane Gear has been upgraded for added strength. X-Protect provides high-level water resistance without sacrificing light gear and rotor rotation. This has increased the durability of the Vanford’s roller clutch and line roller to an IPX8 standard. By incorporating the new Long Stroke Spool design, casting performance has also been improved.

After 6 months of use here in N/W Oregon on the coast of the Pacific Ocean my Vanford 5000 has been great. Smooth drag and it cast far with my 9 ft 6 in G.Loomis Steelhead med/light action even with 40 lb Berley X9 Braid. I caught many Steelhead up to a trophy 20 pounder and recently a nice 12 pound Spring Chinook Salmon. I plan on getting the Vanford 3000 model for summer steelhead and summer fishing with a light 9 foot spinning rod, the ultimate light weight outfit that can still land a large fish. I also have a Daiwa Ballistic and a Shimano CI4 Stradic and though they are high quality reels the Vanford beats them in all areas, and it is the smoothest spinning reel I have ever owned and I'm 70 years old, been fishing since I was 6. I tried to post this review before and it mysteriously vanished so I’m trying again. I really wanted to like this reel. The one I received was rough and loud out of the box, not at all like the Stradic Ci4 that this model replaced. I tried several in the store looking for a replacement and they were all this way. This is incredibly disappointing in this price range and considering the old Stradic Ci4 was such a home run.

I purchased the Vanford as my first spinning reel. I was looking for a reel that was light, cast far and did not create birds-nests when casting. This reel surpassed my expectations. I used it for the first time in March for crappie...very pleased with results. I was able to cast jigs, worms and minnows with split-shot equally well. I'll also be fishing for Walleye and bass.
Bought the Vanford Compact 3000 HG . What a great reel smooth , light and pleasure to use. Paired this reel with a Zodias L rod and you can go for hours flicking plastics.
I just bought my second Vanford 3000 to use on the Tennessee River in North Alabama for smallmouth and striped bass fishing. I much prefer the 3000 to the 2500, since the reels weight exactly the same, but the 3000 holds 30 more yards of monofilament line. That extra capacity means that when drift-fishing in the current, I have a little cushion to keep me from having all my line stripped off my reel if I don't react quickly enough to retrieve my lure.I mounted my Vanfords on two different St. Croix spinning rods - a 6'6" Med Lt Fast Action Avid, and a 6'10" Med Lt Extra Fast Action Mojo Bass (my favorite rod) - and rig both reels with ~ 100 yds. of 8 lb. Berkley Trilene Big Game as backing and ~ 75 yds. of 10 lb. Berkley Nanofil, with 6 ft. of 8 lb. I use Quadruple Surgeon's Knots for the backing to line and line to leader connections with good success. The Vanfords are extremely light, extremely durable and smooth, and fit my medium size hands much better than the Daiwa Tatula in the same spool size. (The space between the reel foot and the rotor is too small on the Tatula, which results in the bail hitting my fingers while reeling.) I own two Shimano Stradic 3000 FJ's and two Shimano Stradic 3000 Ci4+ reels, and while the four Stradics are excellent reels for the money, the Vanfords are even better.Try one and you'll be glad you did.
Ordered and was dispatched the same day and received in 3 days to the UK.Fantastic experience with this company will definitely recommend to everyone I know who fishes.
This is by far the best spinning reel I’ve owned, and now I own 3; two 3000’s for steelhead fishing and a 1000 for trout, super light, butter smooth drag, haven’t had any problems, my oldest 3000 is about a year old too. Highly recommended!
I have a 4000 and a 5000, which are basically the same reel. I do not have overly large hands or fingers, but find the drop from where the reel joins the rod to the the angle where it goes to the body of the reel to be too small. It is uncomfortable to me to operate the reel. I did not have this problem with Stradics or Saros reels. Might be just me but try before you buy.
I own a couple Stradic 2500’s and thought a 2500 Vangford the same size, it isn’t. Much smaller - my bad I guess. No back reeling ability but smooth drag system. Overall, well made with decent casting distance. Would recommend for smaller fishing or go to a four or five thousand series.
