Shimano XT SL-M8100 12-Speed Shifter, Black
Along with the release of Shimano's workhorse 12-speed mountain group comes updated shifters as well, offering precise and responsive shifting for improved control on the trail. Featuring refined ergonomics and a lighter shifting action, the new XT SL-M8100 Trigger Shifters provide a claimed 20% quicker lever access and require 35% less shifting force than the previous generation. They also get a rubberized thumb paddle for improved grip on the downshift, with the paddle offering just a bit more surface area than XTR. The key change, however, is the introduction of an I-SPEC EV version of the shifter, which lets riders customize the ergonomics by allowing 14mm of lateral adjustment and 20-degrees of rotational adjustment, making it easy to find the most comfortable position for your hands. That being said, you'll want to stick with the standard handlebar clamp version if you aren't running Shimano brakes. Perhaps our favorite feature of the XT shifters is Shimano's proven multi-shift function that lets you shift up two gears at once if you need to accelerate quickly on a downhill section of trail. The second click is just a bit firmer than the first one, which prevents any accidental overshifts. If you're running a double chainring up front, the left shifter features a Rapid-Fire Mono shift lever that lets you shift both up and down with a single thumb lever. You push it once to shift from the small ring to the big ring. To go the other direction, you give it a little push forward until it clicks, or you can pull to release it and the chain moves back down to the small ring.

I have used this shifter over about 400 hard miles of riding so far and it's been perfect. The multi-shift and bi-directional shift features are nice and no other shifter I've tried, not even a SRAM X01 Eagle, has felt as good. I am using this XT shifter with a SLX drivetrain fwiw.

I purchased a Specialized Stumpjumper that had a 12 speed Sram shifter on it. I prefer the XT or XTR Shimano 12 speed shifter. They have a cassette ring change of 2 with a single lever stroke that I prefer. Much less shifting strokes on my rides for my older thumb.

This product so far has made shifting easier by just a click; before, I'd have to pull and hold for it to shift, now I click, and the derailleur does the rest. Products like this make you wonder why less mechanically efficient products exist. Get this product for ease of use and efficient shifting; the price is excellent for what it does.

It’s been great so far but I’ve heard there’s a design flaw which causes a failure but it hasn’t gotten me yet… I bought this to replace a NX Eagle shifter and it worked perfect out of the box! Later used this with m7000 rear derailleur and 10-45t m7100 cassette and have had really good performance to date. Must use shimano 12 speed chain to get benefits of shifting under power!!!
Here to report the same thing as the other one star review. The down shifter will no longer engage. Seems like shimano rushed this groupo in response to SRAM. It’s just not as good as older shimano.
The shifter itself works great and the setup looks super clean with the I-Spec EV sharing a clamp with the brake lever but the range of adjustability is not very good. I prefer to have my brake levers pretty far inboard for easy one finger breaking and I have them angled downward for more XC style riding. With this brake orientation there is not enough range of motion in the I-spec adjustment to get the shifter in a good spot. I can barely reach the upshift with my index finger and I have to stretch my thumb pretty far backwards to reach the downshift which causes me to hold my bars funny and is resulting in a lot of thumb pain. I wish there was an option to adjust or swap the levers which would allow this to be a perfect setup but I'm probably going to have to by ... MoreThe shifter itself works great and the setup looks super clean with the I-Spec EV sharing a clamp with the brake lever but the range of adjustability is not very good. A shifter is the unsung hero of any groupset. This XT shifter is no exception - instant release, multi-shift, and it comes with the coated cable and housing for buttery shifts! You can literally run a deore, slx, xt, or xtr derailleur with this shifter and not notice any difference in performance.
Perfect upgrade for my kid's new 12-speed Shimano-based hardtail, which came with the more basic Deore shifter along with the intermediate SLX rear derailleur. This XT shifter allows for quick multiple shifts, both up and down the cassette, which adds nice functionality over and above the slightly lower end SLX and Deore shifters. And the price difference really isn't much, considering what you get.
Perfect shifter for a Shimano 12 speed conversion. The XT shifter is the bang for buck at a top end. Crisp shifts and multiple release is a welcome benefit in combination with the Shimano cassette and rear derailleur.
My new Trek Stache has 12 speed Sram NX drivetrain. The Sram shifter works just fine but I prefer Shimano XT shifters. I really appreciate the multiple upshift & either push or trigger options. Sram shifters or at least mine don't allow this. I wasn't sure if I could use a Shimano shifter with Sram derailer, this is my first try. I'm happy to say it works just fine !!
