I'll admit it. I've been known to compromise on some gear in order to achieve the same goal and to save a few bucks. What you get in return for those hard earned dollars is a fit and finish that is unparalleled (except for Arai perhaps), ventilation that works, and a helmet that is built to last. Bang for the buck- Shoei is an expensive helmet but has all of the features one needs for true dual sport riding and gives you real piece of mind with its safety features.Protection and Durability- After a freak mid-speed (30-40MPH) impact with livestock on a national forest hard-packed road; I landed on my head and shoulder (I was standing on the pegs at the time); but even though I was temporarily knocked unconscious, I didn't suffer a concussion or have any subsequent cognitive issues. The outer shell was gouged/scratched and some helmet accessories were damaged/destroyed but the helmet worked as designed.Features- The peak is relatively quite and stable at speeds under 80 MPH and works great on sunny days. The DS design allows plenty of breathing room when exerting yourself in hot, technical off-road situations. A quick squirt of Muc-off keeps fogging at bay in all-day rainy weather when using the vents correctly.Comfort/Airflow- The helmet is a bit heavy but well balanced so I have had no issue with neck discomfort; neither on multi-week tours nor days of demanding more technical riding. I had some pressure points early but replaced my head pad (available on Shoei's website) with the thinner version and all was good. The helmet can be a bit warm with visor shut on 80+ degree days even with all vents open...goggles (they fit the helmet well) solve that problem off-road.Style- The external helmet dimensions are specific to sizes so the smaller sizes are well proportioned but in solid white they look like a storm trooper- if buying again I'd get a darker solid or the Navigate style.Overall a rock solid, safe helmet for DS if you will be riding on and off-road.

This is the first top-of-the-line helmet I've owned, and I love wearing it while riding my Tenere 700. Miles better than the Bell MX-9 I used before. It is snug and takes many miles to break in. I measured my head at 59.5 cm, exactly in the middle for a large. I bought the helmet and immediately went on an 800 mile trip, and it would consistently start to squeeze my head uncomfortably after an hour or so, especially in the cheeks and ears. I thought, did I just spend almost $700 on a helmet for it to be too small? When I got home I ordered and installed the thinner cheek pads and then immediately went on another 1300 mile trip. This time it was perfect, I could wear it for hours with no discomfort! I'm a pretty lean person and don't have a very wide face, so I ... Once it's broken in, though, it's perfect.Other things to note: the helmet is quiet, the visor position is perfect for blocking sun without obstructing vision, and the channels for glasses/sunglasses are in the perfect position.

This is my impression from my first test ride with this helmet. I took it through some back roads and then on to the interstate and back. My previous (and only ever) helmet was the RF1200.Pros:First of all, this helmet is super comfortable. One of the biggest knocks on this helmet is the weight, but to be honest I can't tell much of a difference between this and the RF1200 out on the ride.Second, the aerodynamics of this thing are incredible. I got it up to 80mph and not once during my ride did I feel any pull whatsoever even while looking around and getting battered by wind. It's shocking really considering it has a visor. Super quiet too.Third, I didn't experience fogging conditions during this ride, but shoutout to the pinlock system, it's a game ... MoreThis is my impression from my first test ride with this helmet. Super quiet too.Third, I didn't experience fogging conditions during this ride, but shoutout to the pinlock system, it's a game changer.Cons:The venting is absolutely non-existant. I could feel a very very tiny bit through the vent on the top of the head, but the mouth vent and the vents by the temples basically do nothing. I couldn't even figure out which position was open or closed. I'd imagine this helmet gets SUPER hot in the heat with the visor down. The counter to this is that it's nice that the visor clicks into different positions so you can open the visor up an inch or so and get some venting that way. Also, when the visor is fully up there is no pull or anything like that if you like to go visor open with sunglasses like I do.Another thing regarding airflow that I noticed (not quite sure how to explain this but I'll try) is that when the visor is fully up at high speeds, the airflow is easier over your face. With my RF1200 if I were on the freeway and maybe wanted to go visor all the way up for a min to cool off the wind would smash into my face and my eyes would dry out as expected. This helmet it seems like the same amount of airflow but it flows along your face easier so it's easier to keep your eyes open in that scenario.I'll try update this post as I ride more
First time with a helmet/Adventure helmet in this price range... I clearly can feel the difference in comfort and quietness on my head and can justify the price. With the helmet having cutouts for speakers, I will be adding comms at some point . Visor is great, not much noise or resistance although I have not ridden much on the highway yet. Face shield is great and locks in different positions very well . Looking forward to a much overdue long distance ride w/ the new helmet and comms installed.
Excellent quality of construction. Very plain color/styling. The padding was thicker than Hornet DS which caused a tighter fit than previous same size Hornet DS to the point that I would have preferred the next size larger. Liner styrofoam provides for easy fitting of Cardo communication speakers although with the tighter fitting size, my ear lobes get folded when putting helmet on and it takes a fair amount of effort to get them comfortably straightened.
I upgraded from an HJC budget half helmet to the Hornet X2 in gloss black, All riding is on a CFR250L mostly on 2 lane highways, farm roads, and some single track. I wish I had considered an adventure / dual sport helmet sooner. With the Hornet, if I want air, I leave the windshield up (most of the time I do this). With it up, I wear yellow tinted sun glasses that fit well with the slots cut in the padding for the arms. Some noise but not bad. I expect that. If I put the shield down, it seals nearly 100% with the rubber gasket, then there are three thumb switches to let in air flow if desired from various areas of the helmet.. Closed, it is airtight, very quiet and streamlined - surreal. The visor is durable and works great with vents so it does not grab wind. The ... The size I wear (XL) fits snug and really well in all areas (am still breaking it in) / I wear a 7.5" + hat size / am used to a looser helmet but went by the book and feel snug now - glad I did that because the helmet does not shift at anytime when riding or looking around. I wanted a lot of visibility as a priority and this helmet provides that over other adventure ones I tried on - with its wide opening for goggles and the ease in which you can turn your head with the helmet on. The helmet is quality fit and finish all the way around - made in Japan to which they are noted for. I was actually looking for a white helmet but gloss black was available so got it. Looks better than white with my bright yellow moto-jacket. Because of its high quality, this helmet is the nicest piece of gear that I have and worth the money from a safety standpoint too. It is my only helmet now and when it wears out I will likely buy it again if they still produce it. Makes my riding much more enjoyable.
I can definitely tell this is a premium quality helmet, the materials are good quality, textures, the vision is perfect. However... it runs small. I measured my head as per instructions and left 1cm extra just in case, 58cm was the measure. Bought Medium size. When I put it on, it felt tight(but thats normal for a new helmet) left the helmet on for about 45 minutes and it gave headache due to the pressure points in my head. I removed the Central pad and even without it I could feel it was a little too small. I will be returning this to get a Large. Besides this sizing detail I would really recommend this helmet if you are not in a budget.
Shoei, always! I've been riding for well over four decades. Way back when you really needed two helmets if you were riding off-road and on the highway. Today, that's not the case! The Hornet X2 is the perfect mix for my riding habits. I can easily use goggles if needed or pull the shield down and cruise for hours on the highway. The helmet is extremely well built, comfortable and provides excellent vision. Airflow is the best I've experienced with any Shoei helmet, and I've owned many. Highly recommended!
There’s lot of hype surrounding this helmet and I regretfully bought into it. I want to like the helmet but yanking it on and off my dome is an excruciating endeavor that leaves me asking “Why did you spend $600 on this again?”This was my first expensive helmet purchased and I’m debating on returning it to CycleGear and sticking with my Bell MX-9. The visor install and removal is cumbersome, the noise isn’t much better than Bell or AGV and as mentioned earlier, the fit is not great and pulling it on and off is a contest on how much pain I can take that’s left my ears and head pretty sore. I’m in between sizes so maybe that’s the problem. The medium is too tight and the large is too big. I emailed Shoei asking about exchanging the cheek pads for thinner ones in ... I’m in between sizes so maybe that’s the problem. The medium is too tight and the large is too big. I emailed Shoei asking about exchanging the cheek pads for thinner ones in hopes of alleviating this issue. In ADV forums, it appears this was a service they offered but Shoei stopped this program 2 years ago and expects you to shell out more money to make their helmet fit your head. All around, I’d maybe look elsewhere if you’re in between sizes.
