The sound quality of bone conduction headphones can’t compare to in-ear monitors, but that’s the nature of bone conduction technology, so it’s a tradeoff worth making if you need situational awareness.With the OpenSwim Pro headphones, Shokz has addressed the biggest deficiency in the previous version: the lack of Bluetooth capability. The OpenSwim Pro expands onboard storage to 32 GB when in MP3 mode, but adds Bluetooth that can be used when you’re not underwater.If you have the OpenRun headphones, you’ll be hard-pressed to tell the difference between those and the OpenSwim Pro. The OpenSwim Pro is basically the OpenRun with the ability to listen underwater. Doing A/B testing between the two models, I struggled to tell the difference in sound quality between the two, with a possibly slightly fuller sound in the OpenSwim Pro. Two EQ modes are available, standard and vocal. Vocal mode removes a lot of the bass, allowing you to enjoy the spoken words without the extra vibrations that sometimes happen with a speaker who has a lower voice.MP3 mode relies on mp3 files that you put on the internal storage. Since you’ll be using these underwater where Bluetooth can’t reach, you’ll need to load up the audio files you want to take with you. On a Windows computer, this is almost trivial. To do so, simply connect the headphones to your computer using the supplied multiuse charging cable. Windows sees the OpenSwim Pro as an external drive, so all you need to do is to drag files from your computer to this drive. That’s it! While you can drag and drop entire folders, OpenSwim Pro does not recognize the folder structure, which makes sense, since there’s no screen.While I’m accustomed to using my OpenRun while running, I’ve never been able to listen while swimming, so I was anxious to find out how these would work. Switching to MP3 mode is easy, and the companion app allows you assign the mode toggle either to a long press on the button on the left earbud, or to a simultaneous press and hold on the volume up/down buttons. Surprisingly, pressing both buttons can be done with the thumb and works well. Once in MP3 mode, the music starts and you’re ready to swim. As soon as I went underwater, I was struck by how good the music sounded! The bass that is normally lacking was there in spades, and the music sounded full and loud. Upon leaving the water, it’s just as easy to switch back to Bluetooth mode and go back to streaming music and podcasts, and taking calls. By the way, call quality was excellent, so these can be your hands-free headset as well.If you already have a pair of OpenRun or OpenRun Pro headphones, you probably don’t need these unless you also have swimming as part of your exercise program. If you do, it’s great to have a single set of headphones able to meet your listening needs both in and out of the water. If you have a pair of the original OpenSwim headphones, you’ll want to get these for the sorely-needed Bluetooth mode and upgraded sound. For you, this is a worthy upgrade.If you’re a runner, biker or swimmer and looking for a way to take your tunes with you while remaining aware of your surroundings, bone conduction is the way to go. OpenSwim Pro brings together the best of the OpenRun and OpenSwim headphones while retaining best in class comfort and stability. These aren’t the headphones I pull out when I want to isolate myself and get lost in my music, but for everything else, these are my go-to.I’m giving them 5 stars, but not because they’re the overall best in all categories. After charging them and wearing them for the first time I will say they take a little getting used to as far as finding the ideal placement below your ears and for the band around the back of your head. Once you do you will find the right spot for your ideal sound reproduction without them getting in the way or feeling uncomfortable. I was really blown away when these sounded better with more volume than my old favorite and discontinued Backbeat 3150’s. One thing I do notice though is they tickle my ears, especially with low-frequency sounds. However, it is not something that I can not deal with. Overall, I would say if you are looking for something this. The Shoks Open Swim Pro headphones are probably one of the best bone-conduction headphones you can buy. Shoks has been a leader in the bone conduction segment for many years and they are still pushing the boundaries of this technology with innovative ideas and high quality products.

It does sound loud enough while listening to music or pod cast while not sacrificing the surrounding sounds.SWIMMINGThe bone conduction technology really is something else, while swimming and plugging your ear canal with ear plugs you can "hear" the sound even though it is resonating via the vibrations, it does not sound at all like typical earbuds but it is playing underwater. It does do a great job allowing you listen to your music or podcast while under the water. The biggest hassle is downloading mp3 format music or podcasts to the 32mb memory. I have music already in that format from my old days of buying music. I wouldn't even know where to download mp3 nowadays. It is something to be aware of, MP3 for swimming and bluetooth for running.POWERThe power cable is easy to connect and charge and the battery lasts as long as i need to swim, about an hour or so, i don't spend more time than that in the water. I haven't had them die out on me when i need them.The biggest takeaway is the sound is very good and it is very hard for me to criticize it when i keep reminding myself they work while swimming. I definitely recommend these for those that want to enjoy sound while swimming or while running. I enjoy them more for running to be honest.

Although is all mostly rubber, it feels rugged and long-lasting. I also appreciate the physical buttons for volume and on/off. This is a feature that is getting deleted nowadays, and I like my physical buttons, so this is a plus. The only thing I wish was different is the charging cable. Why not a USB-C charger? It’s a bummer because you must carry the charging cable when traveling instead of using a universal charger that works with everything else.Comfort – 4/5 – easy to put on and comfortable feel. I wish they were a little smaller. I don’t like the loop being so far away from my head because when running it moves a bit, but the headphones don’t fall out. They stay put, but if there were size options or a way to make them smaller, I know I would like a better snugged fit around the back of my head.Sound -5/5 – for open air sound it’s perfect. Underwater is a little less loud, but the fact that I can still listen to music while swimming, this is the first time I can even though that, so WIN for me!All in all, I highly recommend these for anyone who wants to listen to some chill music while swimming to make it even more relaxing or even as a runner, I use this to be able to listen to my surroundings and yet have some music during my run. I wouldn’t use these as my everyday day headphones, but they have become my headphones for my workouts, and they are perfect for this because I like to hear what’s going on around me.

What you want to do in the water will dictate which mode you want to use.When I first stuck my head underwater, I was surprised at the richness of the sound. I did find, however, that submersing my head more than about six inches underwater would break the Bluetooth connection. This could prove to be a challenge if the connection is lost for too long and does not automatically reconnect - you would have to swim to the phone/music source and restart your playlist. The same goes for talking on a phone call.However, thanks to the MP3 mode, you can download a playlist into the headset and not have to worry about connectivity. That would be my preferred mode if I were going to plan to be in the water for a long time.The specs clearly say that they are not meant to be submerged "up to two meters for up to two hours" thanks to the IP68 rating.These headphones are not made for snorkeling or SCUBA.Swimming is not the only time I might get wet - these can be used for exercising when I expect to be very sweaty and do not want to worry about damaging expensive headphones.Overall, these Shokz OPENSWIM headphones are a real find and I do not hesitate to recommend them.

I am not a scientist nor a medical professional who has studied anatomy but that is my understanding on how bone conduction works in headphones. The “open-ear” feature still allows road and adjacent sounds to be heard so that a runner, sports player and user is not totally isolated from surroundings for safety.These OpenSwim Pro models are totally waterproof for swimming while using and adds bluetooth 5.3 that the original model did not have; the internal memory has also been increased 8 times to 32GB of internal storage for adding music files, spoken books, podcasts or anything else one wants to listen to either while dry or wet in a pool or shower or hot tub or steam room or wherever it is wet and damp. The Shokz website says 32 GB is enough to hold approximately 8,000 songs. There is a button that instantly switches from internal storage to bluetooth.The onboard preset equalizer modes on the headphones cover a swimming mode,a vocal boost mode, and standard flat mode. As in the original model, the OpenSwim Pro is IP68 rated for water and dust-resistant. The description from Shokz indicates the headphone can be submerged in a couple of meters of water for several hours without worry. Shokz specifies a full charge is good for 9 hours of playback time.I am a swimmer and tried them in the lap lanes at my local fitness center. They work to play music to time my lap swimming so I don't swim too fast and tire myself out prematurely. By selecting the MP3 format music files I loaded into the internal memory I can swim at a steady pace for more beneficial benefits. Swimming is a great exercise and does not introduce joint impact as does jogging and court sports. It is an easy process to connect a USB cable to my computer and use an easy Shokz app, to transfer music files into the OpenSwim Pro.The headphones are wonderful for allowing me to swim while listening to music. The sound is very good as it envelopes my sense of hearing and with excellent stereo separation. It is clear and quite loud so adjust the volume before swimming. As stated, I am also able to hear any sounds around me (such as lifeguard whistles and instructions) if need be. Wearing these while swimming makes the lap swimming exercise more enjoyable for me. They are also conversation starters in that other swimmers will ask about them and we start lap lane friendships.I tried them while swimming with Bluetooth from my phone approximately 12 meters from the longest distance to the headphones (since the lap lanes are 25 meters long and I placed the smartphone in a deck chair equidistant from both ends of the lap lane) . Later on, with research, I learned that the bluetooth signal travels less than 1 foot (only inches) in water. The headphones sporadically connected and disconnected as my head came up above the water surface as I inhaled on each stroke. This is not a deficiency of the Shokz headphones, it is a fact of physics and of the existing Bluetooth low power protocols. Of course, playing music files stored in the 32GB built-into the headphones has no such limitation.When out of the water I used them to play a news stream on my Android smartphone and I was able to walk approximately 125 feet away and still heard the stream. The headphones are so lightweight that one will forget they are being worn.The headphones are re-charged using a small USB A cable which ends with a polarity charged magnetic end. It fits only one way using the built-in magnet to the OpenSwim Pro headphones; it fits onto the right ear side of the headphones where 4 waterproof and corrosion proof metal contacts are located. The cable then plugs into a USB port on any computer or into a plain USB phone charger to charge the headphones. The same cable also allows moving music files onto the headphones when plugged into a computer that has the music files. Shokz is compatible and will play MP3, WAV, AAC, WMA and FLAC format music files.Note: I also have a Shokz OpenRun Pro headphone and the charging cable for that model WILL NOT work with the OpenSwim Pro model; the contacts are slightly different and the shape wont fully dock together. The music playback quality is excellent - easily the best bone conduction headset I've ever listened to and pretty solid for the price class its in.In the water, sound quality is not lost. They also stay put without being too tight on your head. Out of the water, the fact you can listen to a song and hear everything around you makes working out in public spaces safer, as you can hear traffic around you.Charging is where I'm torn. I love the magnetic charger, but I don't like that USB-C or Qi charging isn't an option. I know it's not big enough for Qi though, and a USB-C charge port would allow for water ingress. The magnetic charger works well though, with a very positive connection.For those that want the perfect headset for any exercise in any situation, these are the perfect headphones. Great sound quality with premium fit and feel make these worth the money.

Then again, superb sound quality isn't what these were made for; these are swimming/work-out headphone purpose built so you can hear things around you.2) Because of the design, these go around the back of your head and then hook over your ears, these aren't going anywhere. You can run, swim, do any kind of workout; and heck I would even say wear these on an inverted roller coaster, and they aren't coming off. I even wore them to bed and fell asleep listening to a YouTube audio track of crashing waves, and they were still on and secure in the morning. While the band isn't adjustable and there's just one size offered, it fit me just fine with a little slack in the back, so they will fit any size head.3) I love the MP3 player functionality! it holds 32gb of music in a variety of formats for hours upon hours of listening pleasure. No need to be within Bluetooth range of your phone, you can enjoy these headphones as a standalone unit. There is a universal button on the side of the headphones where you use a double or triple click to skip forward and backward through your songs; and then on the other side of the headphones are buttons for power, volume, and mode.4) Once you get the OpenSwim Pro in the water, it really shines. I was absolutely blown away by the difference in sound quality when I was swimming, the bass response is significantly better and the sound in general is higher quality. With an IP-68 rating, you can stay in the water for hours without worry.5) Charging is via a custom magnetic cable, which I see as both good and bad. You don't have to worry about water getting inside and fouling a USB-C connector, but if you break or lose the charger, it's going to be harder and more expensive to find a replacement. Wireless charging would have been a nice added feature. If you connect the cable to your PC, it sees the headphones as a hard drive and you simply drag your music files into it; no app or program needed.6) There is a Shokz app you can download for controlling various features of the headphones. You can customize what the buttons do (Bluetooth/MP3 switching, Voice Assistant, EQ settings, and more). I have an Android phone, and the app works flawlessly.My final impression of the Shokz OpenSwim Pro is immensely positive. Besides the features reviewed above, these headphones come with a 2-year warranty which is a big selling point. Also included are some earplugs for when you're swimming, and a waterproof case; basically everything you'd need. So far, in the week I have owned them I have only had to recharge once, and have spent an hour in the pool; gone on a 2 mile walk; slept with them overnight (although they powered off at some point after the computer went into power saving mode) as well as just using them playing MP3s while surfing the web. I can strongly recommend these for anyone looking for waterproof headphones with all the additional features mentioned above. You can't go wrong!
