Shure SRH1840 Headphones Professional Open Back
The Shure SRH1840 is a pair of headphones that sport matched 40mm drivers. These neodymium magnets provide a frequency response of 10 Hz to 30 kHz, doing so in a balanced, clear, and articulate manner, with accurate bass and smooth, extended highs. The steel driver frames sport vented center pole pieces to eliminate internal resonance, ensuring a consistent performance at all volume levels. The open-back earcup design promotes proper airflow, which results in natural audio with a wide stereo image and a greater sense of depth than many closed-back designs. The headphones have a lightweight and durable frame that utilizes an aircraft-grade aluminum alloy yoke and stainless-steel grilles. Lightweight at 0.6 lb, the SRH1840's headband is fully adjustable to provide a snug and secure fit.

Very pleased with the quality of these headphones. They have a fuller sound than 1540 headphones so a good upgrade. May sell some other headphones I have, as these are so clear sounding and so natural. I can forget I'm wearing them because of sound quality and comfort level. They don't force themselves upon you when listening, the sound is just there, without you being aware of the headphones. Definitely try before buying more expensive headphones.

I have spent a long time researching headphones. Although this model is now several years old the reviews are very good. They are better than some headphones I was looking to buy at £1050. I have paired them with a Chord Mojo which is also excellent. They sound superb, albeit the bass is not as deep as some other headphones on certain tracks. They are extremely comfortable to wear even with glasses. I would give these 5 stars as they tick all the boxes for someone like me who just wants to listen to music which sounds great. Excellent headphones, definitely worth a look in before you buy anything else. One tiny thing is the cable is too long. You get 2 plus a spare set of ear pads which is unheard of, but both cables are too long and I would like a shorter one which ... MoreI have spent a long time researching headphones. This is a pro item. However, my first reaction was to return the item in two days after connecting it to my laptop and listening to youtube videos. This sounded poorer from my Sennheiser 380pro except for some additional clarity. Once I used a better quality mp3, and increased the volume, its quality started showing up. What did I expect, having bought a pro headphone and driving with just a laptop, that too with a youtube video! Wake up.. it needs a headphone hifi amplifier or a good driver. And then its all clear how my Sennheiser 380pro makes it all muddy compared to the Shure srh1840! Amazingly clear separation of every detail, good bass, smooth mids and crystal clear highs without being harsh!

Very lightweight and comfortable. Took about 30 hours use to lose a bright edge to the sound which verged into brashness at high volume. They are still quite 'brightly lit' but excellent clarity, detail and the dynamics can be explosively fast. Bass is deep and taut, but a bit lightweight. Soundstaging is quite wide and well focused. Overall very enjoyable but the tonality is tilted away from the bass and toward the treble. A little EQ can sort these issues if necessary. Maybe some extra usage will also help to balance the sound; I've only had them a couple of weeks. For reference, other headphones I use and enjoy are Beyerdynamic T90, Philips Fidelio X2HR, PSB M4U, Stax SR3, B&O H6.
These headphone replace my Shure SRH940s for mixing and late night listening (Im far enough away that the leakage doesnt bother housemates). The 940s are great for tracking but the 1840s are much more accurate and detailed and the low end much more extended for evaluating mixes. I like these much more than Sennheiser HD600s which I used for several years. The only slight complaint is that the cables are a hardened plastic material that is hypersensitive to touch and transfers the sound to the earcups, but in practice this hasnt been a problem because Im not moving around when listening. The price of these headphones is actually quite reasonable considering the excellent quality. Ive only had them a few weeks though, so I cant speak to their durability, however ... MoreThese headphone replace my Shure SRH940s for mixing and late night listening (Im far enough away that the leakage doesnt bother housemates). I use these all the time in my studio. Very comfortable and they translate very well. They are very even sounded without anything being hyped. I love the balance of Top middle and bottom.
I've been recording since 1978 and I got my first pair or of Beyer DT100s in 1980. Since then I've used dozens of headphones, and some of them have been very impressive, but these Shure SRH1840s are the best I've ever heard and not just by edging it, but by a long shot. The bottom end is breath taking, the mid-range is tight and punchy and the top end is crisp and clear. The open back design delivers a wonderfully wide stereo soundstage and did I mention the bass? :0) I've never heard headphones with such a true, rich and powerful bass response, like I said before, it's breath taking. OK, let's be real, these phones are not cheap, clocking in at £419 (BTW PMT were the best value online, some retailers were asking £529!) but if you need headphones that you can ... MoreI've been recording since 1978 and I got my first pair or of Beyer DT100s in 1980. They're that good you might not bother monitoring through speakers again!
These headphones do nothing wrong. I consider them to be perfect-sounding in the sense that everything is just right. That makes them seem a bit boring to my brain compared to my other rowdier, less refined headphones. I'd like them to have more bass thump, but other than that, they sound amazing. I record with them and they sound exact. They remind me of great paper cone studio monitors. That's how good they sound to my ears. Pushed with an iPhone 8 Plus, they're great, but with my headphone amps, they come alive. To my ears, paired with my Denon DA-300USB, they sound their best. It doesn't have a very powerful headphone amp, but the DAC is great and the combination makes these babies sing. Everything sounds so real and alive. They don't sound thin or distant, but very full and complete. Every sound seems to come from outside the head in a semi-circular field. If you want a refined sound that works with just about any genre of music, I highly recommend these. God bless!
Re expensive Headphones SRH1840. As with Monitors it's difficult to assess without a proper listen. Buying over the phone is not ideal for HPhones. they are to replace an ancient set of V good HPhonesThey seem to give more detail & better bass.It will take me time to get to know them etc . I'm still not altogether sure about them as i've not been well
Hard to beat In its price range, these are the best of the $600 and below. Great clarity and awesome soundstage. The sound is neutral. Highs, Mids and Lows are balanced, the bass is there, it just doesn't slam with impact, as mixing headphones should not anyway. The separation and detail of instruments are phenominal. They even have the edge over Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro, the 1990 only beats it in bass impact. Hifiman Sundara slightly beats it in separation of instruments. My overall pick is the 1840, the comfortable level is great, light as a feather to almost any headphone, no clamping here. If price is an issue, Hifiman Sundara is the best way to go. Of course any of the headphones and 1840 cannot compete with my newly purchased Hedd Heddphone. Overall I am ... MoreHard to beat In its price range, these are the best of the $600 and below.
