Does Everything Have To Get Cheaper?

I was redirected to these headphones when trying to replace my beloved SRH840 headphones, which I have beat into the ground after over a decade of use. I am disappointed to discover how the materials and features of this product have been cheapened, if this is indeed the true replacement for the SRH840s. Even the simple plastic notch that used to lock in the cord has been rendered ineffectual, as there is now no way to secure the removable cord - it will pull out. I like the sound quality however, but assume this is an effort to force me to "buy up" and spend more for something that's build to last.

Great Sound, Uncomfortable for Pointy Skulls

I bought these with the idea of having a pair of headphones to leave at the office. The sound is amazing and I agree with Crinacle's headphone list but if you have a pointy head, you /will/ get a hot spot that makes them uncomfortable to wear for extended periods.I would strongly suggest two things: a) get a replacement headband pad that has a notch in the middle - stick it to the current pad via some means (gaffer tape, glue, whatever) and b) get a shorter 3.5mm to 2.5mm cable as the 8 footer that comes with these is not good for casual listening (but is likely just right if you're monitoring while singing or playing).I have the Beyer DT770 Pro and the Senn HD6XX and these SRH840As are in the same league with a smoother, less sibilant sound than the DT770. Great set of cans
25 September 2022

Headphones sound great, they aren't perfectly flat there is a peak I think around 6k and the bass has a bump but sound is clear. Only complaint is I wish SHURE had a shorter cable you could use since their jack is a locking system and the pads are a little shallow so staging is limited

Great sound!
23 October 2022

It's hard to find anything negative about this headphone. Excellent sound all around at every frequency. Excellent American engineering for fit, weight, and clamp pressure. Some people with huge heads or really big hair may have an issue but my large head has room to spare. The only thing I would strongly request is for Shure to offer a shorter straight cable ( 4-5 foot ) for casual music listeners which I am. A spool of 10' of cable is a bit much. You can cover both, professional and personal use with two different lengths of cable. Thank you very much Shure for your efforts ( employees ) in developing a great headphone.

I use this to transcribe speeches
5 February 2022

My dad is a preacher and I found cds of recordings of his sermons. Along with his speeches, I also listen to different recordings and use these headphones for precise listening. I find they're comfortable but I really purchases these because I know how great Shure's warranty is for customers. I was a huge audiophile growing up and used their in ear buds for years, whenever they needed support or help, shures warranty came through for me. So I purchased these headphones for quality but also because the warranty will ensure, they would last. #sweepstakes

Newest Version is a serious upgrade
3 September 2022

I got the new 840's last night, overnight shipping was sweet. The new design is great, and while they felt more "consumery" out of the box - this is not so. The new headphones are lighter in weight, clearer sounding, overall more comfortable, and the swivel mechanism for the ear-cups is much more robust in design where the previous version was bit less stable. I'm still breaking them in, but so far they sound great! Sonic image is nice and wide, spatially detailed, very smooth overall and not as dark as the previous model, the low end is very forward still but tighter sounding, and the midrange is right where it needs to be, vocals are clean and present with exceptional realism. Not to mention the isolation the closed back design offers is a beautiful thing! Highly ... MoreI got the new 840's last night, overnight shipping was sweet. Underrated Gem Alert
17 October 2022

I got to compare these with several other headphones and they were one of the most accurate sounding of the lot (the other model was also a Shure, but I forget which one). Unlike a lot of headphones, these don't undershoot or overshoot on the bass or have that weird "processed" EQ curve that normal consumer headphones have--these seemed to translate the music in a way you assume the artist would have intended you to hear it. It was more of an open, "finished" sound....not overly scooped or lacking detail and punch in the mids. You will like these for both mixing and casual listening, unlike many headphones. What I generally dislike about a lot monitoring headphones is that they undershoot the bass, likely to simulate the experience of monitors that focus in on ... MoreI got to compare these with several other headphones and they were one of the most accurate sounding of the lot (the other model was also a Shure, but I forget which one). As a result, you end up going back and forth trying to guesstimate your lows somewhere in-between what the headphones are telling you and what your monitors produce. In regards to my tastes, I prefer ACCURATE bass that also keeps the detail of the mids intact when I'm checking a mix on headphones and this model was the most satisfactory, by a noticeable margin.

Was sent new headphones from Shure after SRH840's broke
11 March 2022

The headphones are loud and clear. Good for tracking with drums. Sound is balanced and neutral. Seem pretty accurate. Overall, I like. The new head band connection at the cup looks to be much better than the old. Nice for Shure to come through. Thanks

inadequate frequency response - like listening thru pillows
18 July 2023

I would have used these headphones to sequence original arrangements. I traded them back in for a different brand that has better frequency response. They did fit well and were comfortable, but for the price I expected much better quality of sound.I am also disappointed that GC's headphone demo setup to listen/compare didn't give me a sense of the lesser quality
