I have used the succession of “travel zooms” from both Tamron and more recently Sigma. This Sigma Contemporary 18-200 is the best I’ve owned. I was happy with the previous Sigma 18-200 II model I have but decided to purchase this newest 18-200 C based on lens tests I was reading. This lens is sharp at all focal lengths with a quick and silent focus. It’s a bit lighter than the previous Sigma 18-200 II and when retracted it’s no longer than my Nikon 18-55 kit lens but still feels solid and well built. It zooms smoothly without any barrel wobble or creep when unlocked. I think it’s also a well finished and attractive lens. After using such lens with my Sony A37 I wanted the same for my DX Nikons. Of course it's not one of "Sigma Art" series it would cost 1000 EUR more, wouldn't it? but it gives very good picture, especially considering its affordable price. Anyone still using attached "kit lens" can be surprised, how really capable his/her camera is simply by such "lens upgrade". Despite offering long range zoom its distortion is negligible images are sharp, vivid and not deformed. Also very useful for macro shots. Nice, handy and affordable allrounder IMHO (mainly for use in daylight conditions! See its aperture values...) worthy of recommendation.

Most other reviews, including PCMag, ePhotozine and LensTip, were giving it high marks for its segment, some being positively surprised by the image that can be produced by such versatile lens. The lense seems to perform well. I do find that the resulting image appears a bit over exposed which I believe is personal taste and corrected by a simple adjustment on my 7d MII. The supplied lens hood would not mate on the lens regardless of the number of times I tried. The result being that the hood was loose and endanger of falling off, which is what happened while photographing in the field.I personally like Sigma lenses, this is my third and I have sold all of my remain Canon lenses. On the plus side, IQ is extremely good especially in low light situations where the shoot does not permit strobe or other electronic lighting. Before I retired ten years ago as a professional photographer my main lens was a Sigma 18-135mm lens. Portraits, weddings, including the studio. I began with Hasselblad in the 70s and my film days ended with the Mamiya 6 before going all digital two decades ago. You are more likely to capture a wider range of subject situations with a zoom. My current Sigma 18-200 is a very decent all-around lens. Period. Especially when using public transportation. Determine your sharpest f/stop settings. Use them! Keep the lens retracted to protect the helical mount and you are good to go. Don?t forget a UV filter to protect the front lens element. This lens in my experience is a good deal for the optics and for the price.

The Sigma locked focus easily and didn't "hunt" as often or as long.The Sigma lens is much heavier than the Canon, but that is to be expected since the Canon is mostly plastic. The Sigma lens has a solid quality feel. Lens weight is something that should be considered when deciding on purchasing any lens.One of my favorite test subjects is my solid gray cat. I like using him as a photo subject because of his dark coloring and fine details. The Sigma handled his coloring quite well with a perfect exposure that impressively detailed his slight color differences. Under the same indoor natural-light conditions, the Canon zoom did not capture his subtle color differences as well, and as a result, his color was more uniform and muted. Don't get me wrong, the Canon photos were still very good, but the Sigma photos were excellent. Fine detail such as whiskers and fur were razor sharp with the Sigma and slightly less sharp with the Canon.I also took a series of outdoor photos where the subject had lots of detail that included light and dark areas. Light/Dark edge transitions are commonly subject to a chromatic aberration known as "purple fringe". Photos taken using the Canon 18-250mm lens had very visible "purple fringe". The Sigma 18-200mm did not show any (at least not obvious) "purple fringe".The Sigma has lots of positives, but there are a couple annoyances so far. The first one is that the zoom ring is not as smooth as I would expect. It tends to bind a little bit between 80mm - 130mm. That might loosen up eventually, but I still plan on talking to Sigma about it. The other comment is that the Sigma lens feels kind of "rough" while being mounted on the camera. It almost feels like you are forcing the lens on the camera when twisting the barrel. The Canon lenses mount extremely smooth. This is not a big deal, especially since I will rarely be taking the lens off of the camera.Overall, the Sigma 18-200mm lens is a well-made, high quality and affordable all-purpose lens. Very impressed with it so far. I will post updates if there is anything significant to add to the review.
I already owned a Nikon 18-300 mm zoom lens which is pretty good. It's a bit soft at 300mm though and using it at 200mm gives similar results when enlarged in photoshop. I thought I'd buy a Sigma 18-200mm in the hope that it might be sharper at the top end. The Sigma pros are that it's significantly smaller and lighter than the Nikon. The lens quality is good and it would make a good all purpose standard lens. The Nikon pros are that it's slightly sharper than the Sigma, and it also makes a good all purpose lens. I'm afraid we just have to accept that with such a wide ranging zoom we're not going to get pin sharp images at the top end. I haven't yet decided which lens I will use as my standard - we shall see!
