Strong construction; very durable and sleek. Great clarity and focus. Only con is its heavy weight, so I would not recommend this lens to someone who isn't using it on a tripod. My main purpose for using this lens is for surf photography so I will always be using a tripod which negates the weight factor. Great lens for the price compared to Nikon and Canon super telephoto lenses.

I purchased this lens to use on my Nikon D800. It is fabulous and has done well for me. It has one drawback, and that is the weight. I fly a lot in small Cessna's around parks in Africa with safari clients and weight is becoming more and more of an issue with charter airline companies. Its a choice between crystal clear images and taking but a handful of clothes to wear!

My lens is now over 10 years old. I started using this lens with 6mp cameras and now use it with a 36mp D800. This lens is made for high resolution cameras. The detail you see in the photos are amazing. I sometimes use it with Sigma 1.4 and 2.0 DG teleconverters and cannot tell a difference in image quality with the 1.4. If you are looking for a fast 300 f/2.8 lens consider the Sigma, it's almost $1500.00 US cheaper than the Nikon.

I bought this lens about 8 years ago and use it mainly for nature and wildlife. It's sharp and stays sharp even with the 1.4 Sigma teleconverter. It looses a little bit with the 2.0 Sigma teleconverter but if you're able to shoot at f8 it's pretty darn sharp. Focus speed is fast, slows down a bit with the 2.0 tc but all lenses slow down with 2.0 tc's. I use the lens with the Sigma TS-41 which helps with stability when used on a heavy Induro tripdo, BDH-3 ballhead and a Induro BHDA Gimbal Head. The pictures wide open are very, very sharp and loses nothing with the 1.4 tc. Best of all, I bought the lens used from B&H and saved a $ for a LN- lens!
I used this lens on a wildlife trip to India. It was lighter than the similar Nikon lens and autofocused consistently with the Sigma 2x tele-converter attached (which is not true with my Nikon lens/2X teleconverter). I was very unhappy with the lack of sharpness, though. My wildlife images just did not pop like they do with the Nikon lens. For my next trip I need to decide whether I want consistent performance (Sigma)all of the time, or sharp pictures (Nikon)some of the time.
WOW! what a beautiful lens! built like a tank. super sharp. fast focus. manual focus ring has a solid smooth well damped quality feel. the whole lens says quality. i use it for wildlife. i can get down on one knee and hand hold it. works great with the sigma teleconverters. only thing missing is os. i added the sigma ts-41 tripod collar and it was a big improvement.
I was skeptical about getting this lens but I decided to bite the bullet and see how it performed. To say I was blown away by the results would be an understatement. Image quality has been on par with both the Canon and Nikon equivalents. The copy I have has no issues with back focusing and is tack sharp wide open. The lens itself is a little heavy but it's easily hand holdable. Drawbacks are I have found that the lens hood sometimes falls off even though I screwed it on tight. Im very impressed with the quality of the lens I received.
I have been using it for nature shots. Nice clear, sharp photos. Very well made, sturdy lens. Because of the large aperture and quality it is heavy. As a 64 year old female I am still able to use it without a tripod, so it is manageable. Ouse on my Nikon D300.
I bought this lens mainly for wildlife photography. I use it mostly with the Sigma APO 2x teleconverter and I get some very sharp pictures. Occasionally I wish I had image stabilization but with the fast shutter speeds I use most of the time I do not miss it much. I use it with a monopod except for in flight birds. I had to get a new monopod head and the only heavy duty one I could find was by Really Right Stuff.
I use this lens mainly for photographing wildlife, mainly birds so far. I could not afford the Nikon VR lens which is almost twice as much. I often use it with the Sigma 2X TC which is about $200 cheaper than the New Nikon 2X TC. Cheaper is one thing but I am getting some very good images and feel that I am limited more by the mediocre AF on my D90 than lack of image stabilization. I have not used it in low light but suspect I will. Autofocus is fast when the camera locks on. I wish it was a bit lighter and it had OS but it is more than satisfactory till I can get 500mm f4 VR.
