A couple of tweaks and they'd rate five stars

I would have given them five stars but for the absence of the side belt loops. I carry some gear on the belt and when you unbuckle the belt (as when relieving your bladder streamside) the gear falls off the belt unless you remember to buckle the ends behind your back. One other minor complaint is the length of the suspenders. They are so long that I have them tightened as far as they will go and they just barely fit me while wearing a light shirt (I'm 5'-10" tall with a long torso and a 44" chest, and weigh 165 pounds). When I wear heavier clothing they'll be fine. I will rate them otherwise as being true to size.I will say these newer G3s are lighter and more flexible than the old style. All in all they're very comfortable and appear to have improved breathability as claimed.

If you didn’t stop reading this review and go check out why these things have 99 reasons for you to buy but a lame excuse ain’t one.Now there are some other great features from inside pockets, outside fly holder due-dads, etc etc- but this is just icing on the already fantastic ice cream cake.I’m not here to make up your mind- I’m reviewing these beasts and these are without a doubt the best purchase I have ever made in my fly fishing ...Ā MoreI bought these ā€˜Merica made leg water keeper offers’ about a month ago and let me tell you- this is a wet fisherman dream! Now let me state a few things you need to know-Is it worth the price? I wore the previous generation Simms G3 and loved them. This new model’s fit is horrible, as if they assumed everyone gained 50 lbs from the pandemic. They are okay in the legs but above the waist they must be twice as wide as the old model. Great if you’re a fat guy, but look elsewhere if you want a good fitting wader without a ton of excess material. Can’t imagine what the king version looks like, lol. I was super excited to try the new Simms suspenders, but, again, very disappointed. I’m 5’8ā€ but still had to cinch the straps as far as they would go (in both medium regular and medium short sizes) causing the cheap elastic support panels to wrinkle and bunch up. The Patagonia fit is great, the suspenders are vastly better, the booties are more comfortable, the gravel guard design is better, etc…and Patagonia actually stands behind their warranty, whereas I’m hearing more and more stories about Simms refusing warranty claims.

First Pair of Simms Waders
12 October 2022

I am a medium with a short inseam. I ordered this exact size and they fit true. They are not baggy, but there’s enough room for some cold weather insulated layers. The waders are comfortable, and breathable. The shoulder straps are very comfortable, but the padded portion tends to wad up and twist. I like the snug fitting gravel guards and absence of the lace hook on the gravel guards. The flip out pouch is useful and I use the interior zipper pocket to store car keys.I’ve fished in them about 5 times at this point with no complaints. Only time will tell regarding their durability. Fingers crossed.

Good Quality
24 April 2022

I have enjoyed these waders and would highly recommend them to anyone wanting to be more comfortable while fishing. The socking feet are contoured to fit and are much more comfortable than my old waders. They are breathable and help to wick away moisture. I like the fleece lined hand warmer pockets and the flip pocket has become my phone pocket. The only negative about them is the detachable zipper pocket seems to come unzipped halfway when I flip it outside of the waders, but they have a check cord to keep it from being lost. They are a good quality item that I highly recommend. Trouts Fly Fishing sent my order promptly and I would purchase from them again. Great experience!

Great waders
12 August 2022

I have a pair of G3 waders from 2010 which work and fit amazingly. Still no leaks but will use them as backup. My new pair of G3 guide waders feel lighter and tend to have more flexibility in the newer updated Gore-Tex. The suspenders are comfortable but I can tell the extra padding added over the clavicles will bunch up with time. The other difference between my old and new waders is the gravel guards are thinner and more flexible but without the metal U-clip that attaches to the laces. Thus far no gravel but only 10 hours of use on them at the start of Steelhead season.I hope they last as long as my old set.I always recommend Simms for fly fishing!

Not so sure
12 August 2022

I’m not so sure these have a value of $600.00. I have an old version of simms that are gortex. That is what I was specifically looking for was the gortex. I use those waders for winter as I can get 3-4 layers on the bottom and a few on top with my jackets. They have a small leak and have been needing to upgrade before this winter. Well, it’s disappointing that simms is not carrying the xxl full any longer and very few shops have the xxl. I already have a booty and with all my layers need some room. So this shop had one last pair and I pulled the trigger. I tried them on.. they will work but not sure how many layers can go on. The gortex is not nearly as thick as my other simms. The gortex is not nearly as thick as my other simms. That’s why I only wear in winter as too warm for summer. But I realize technology is changing and improving so I hope these live up to the price and hype once I get them out. I like the zippered pockets as that is not on the older version. I don’t like the straps as they are difficult to adjust and how to maneuver through the back. I like there is a higher and lower belt loop. The old version loop is so low it’s not realistic to use. I can get a belt in the loop and it’s at the right spot. The old version is a light grey and wasn’t sure of the new color but I do like the darker grey. On a sunny bluebird day not sure how they will blend in but visually I like it.The bottom that goes over your boots is cheap comparatively to the old version. I like I could hook them over my boots. Again another layer for my boots and feet. These have a cheap stitching at the bottom that I know I will struggle with pulling over my boots. All in all, I was excited and now not so much. I would have tried the less expensive waders but I wanted the gortex. The new technology on the other waders may be comparable and with a zipper on the side. Hopefully once I get them on the water I will be reassured of my purchase. I would try the others before the G3.

Regretting My Decision
9 August 2021

Yes, I "only" bought the Freestones but for $300 there are few issues I have with these waders.1. While I HAD to buy "standard length, even though I am 6'1" 275 with a standard (for my height) 32-inch inseam the legs are plenty long, but the crotch is very low, so they are a bit tight in the groin.2. There is no inside dry pocket. ALL the freestones I have had in the past had an inside pocket. There is a zipper so for an additional $30 I can buy a tippet tender, I guess.3. I don’t have a problem yet, but it looks like I easily can. The tab for the gravel guards hit the tops of the stocking feet when placed in a bag for transport. There was already a nice sized ā€œdentā€ in the tops of the booties when I opened the box and now that I have used them several times there are several dents. To prevent this, I have tried rolling from the sock first, top down and even just shoving them in my bag but they seem to hit anyway.4. The belt SUCKS!!!!! There are only 3 loops to hold it in place so its nearly impossible to keep it in the loops while dressing, then trying to chase it down is always fun. Because the short groin area the wader belt is well below my waist and actually wraps around my zipper.Over the past 20 years I have had several pairs of Freestones and have NEVER had problems like this. I had a couple fly shops try talking me into buying another brand but I have had bad experiences with ā€œOā€ so I stood firm. Now I’m starting to regret that decision.

They could be better

I replaced my old women's guide waders purchased in 2015. Unfortunately I am not that impressed with the newer model. The material of the new waders is thinner and seems less durable. The chest area is much larger and the shoulder strap padding gets tangled easily when taking waders on/off. There is only 1 belt loop in the back, not sure why? When you take your waders off your pliers on your belt instantly fall off. The gravel sleeves that go over the boots are worthless. The chest pocket is made of thin material and I fear I will puncture a hole soon.Despite my complaints, they’re still keeping me dry after 3 weeks of constant use.Overall, I want to love them but my old pair is by far way more functional.I’m 5’4ā€, 113 lbs, 34ā€ chest, shoe size 7.5. Very satisfied

I’ve been wearing waders for 35 years. I mostly wet wade when water temps and weather permits but I fish in four seasons. Prior to buying G3’s I had a pair of waders that were fairly light weight. I liked the range of motion a lighter weight wader enables. I also like the light weight in the transition seasons. Lighter weight in the winter is not an issue as layering provides the warmth. The G3 uppers are lighter in weight but the wear areas are heavier. Due to layering I had to go up in size as the straight up sizing fit like street clothes. Although I have a shorter inseam the standard inseam fit just fine. I’m very satisfied with the fit but a couple of things would make them more instantly appealing. The belt is hard to adjust and the belt loops appear suspect. The loops appear to be a nylon material welded to the fabric. The loops just look flimsy. The clips on the suspenders also look a littler light. I hope this pair lasts a good 15 years like my last pair did. I probably wear waders 12-15 times a year. Overall these appear to be a very solid pair of waders.. They fit great and have adequate features.
