Although I have a couple of other machines, a Brother & a Pfaff, I needed something with a bit more oomph for use in crafting etc. I'd done some research & decided on the Singer 4423 Heavy Duty. Not too expensive and not full of features I didn't need...not computerised, either. I'm really rather pleased with this machine! This first task I set it was sewing denim, as I had to alter a pair of jeans. It didn't miss a stitch and sailed through the job. The stitch selection actually matched those on the jeans, which helped my work look tidy. Then I set it to making craft items. All pretty sturdy fabrics - sailed through again! I like this machine because it's simple and does what it says it does. I like this machine because it's simple and does what it says it does. If you want a couple of hundred different stitches, then buy something else. This has twenty three, including stretch. My only complaint is that it doesn't leave the needle down in your work, so watch out for that. Otherwise, I'm very happy with it.

I've had this machine for more than three years now and I love it. I've had way fancier and certainly much pricier machines that I didn't like half as much. It is a simple, fuss-free machine with a good array of stitch-types and adjustments, an automatic buttonhole function, and a strong, reliable motor. With a bigger needle, it will punch through pretty much anything you can fit under the foot. It's absolutely perfect for beginners, but I've been sewing for thirty years and it's everything I need for my projects, which include fine apparel, crafts, and home decor. Price-wise, this machine simply cannot be beat for value and reliability. I actually bought a second one in case Singer stops making this model!

I did a lot of looking around at different makes and models before making this purchase, and I'm very happy with my choice. Lovely quality machine and sews excellently. Great range of stitch choices, compact, easy to set up. Only thing to bear in mind is the speed is fairly quick even when just lightly using the peddle, I'm an intermediate level and find it quite rapid! You get adjusted quickly though. Great price from Dunelm, even better deal than ex display or singer outlet. 2 year guarantee included too which isn't specified on the description here. Day early on delivery too!

This machine does exactly what it says. For my first project I’ve already sewn 6 layers of leather together and also multiple layers (4) of Harris Tweed, to make a handbag. Despite being a very novice sewer I haven’t found any real difficulties, although there is definitely a “knack” to catching the thread from the bobbin, but once mastered it really is quite straightforward. Not a quiet machine, but when it’s dealing with heavyweight fabrics that’s understandable. I would recommend a walking foot as an optional extra, plus some spare bobbins and heavyweight needles. I definitely recommend this machine.
LOVE this machine! No computers, no learning curve from the Singer I had previously that lasted me 30 years. Works like a charm - sews evenly. Has plenty of stitches for various uses. I sew clothing and household dec and am starting to learn to quilt. I inherited a Bernina sewing/embroidery machine that I stored for 2 years; then my old Singer died so I decided to try it out; it was so difficult to learn to use and expensive to maintain that I decided to find a manual Singer, and am SO glad I did! Can't recommend this machine highly enough!
Machine is a nice basic heavy duty machine. I purchased so I could easily take to classes instead of my expensive huskvarna. It works well, however, basic maintenance of removing lint from the bobbin area is not in the manual. All of my other machines manuals suggest cleaning under the black bobbin holder - which in those machines it just pops out. This one required a YouTube video in order to get it out and clean under it. Customer service is not helpful and suggested I take it to a dealer for a $100 “repair” when all that was needed was a quick cleaning. (Please use you tube at your discretion- it worked for me - but I don’t claim to know anything about anything)
I've used Singer sewing machines for the last 50+ years. This model was an extreme disappointment. It is in no way 'heavy duty'. It sews faster than previous sewing machines and that's about it. It won't sew through the same things the previous machine (purchased in 1992) sewed. This one is a complete waste of money. I've communicated with Singer several times about this and the nearly useless Serger I bought at the same time, and at no time did they say they were looking to improve on their current models. If you want to sew two pieces of lightweight material together and nothing else, this machine will probably work fine for you.
I purchased this machine when my 35 year old Singer gave up its ghost while trying to complete a chair cover project. Since I only sew very occasionally (couple times a year) and do not use any fancy stitching, I only needed something basic and nothing expensive nor complex. What I did want and need, however, is the ability to sew through thicker fabrics like denim and canvas, especially since I double hem practically everything without taking the time to miter corners, which means going through as many as 6 layers of heavy fabric. After extensive research, I decided on the 4423 because it advertised a more powerful motor and didn't break the bank. After a couple weeks of sewing, I can say it has performed like a champ. After extensive research, I decided on the 4423 because it advertised a more powerful motor and didn't break the bank. After a couple weeks of sewing, I can say it has performed like a champ. I completed my chair cover project with the machine sewing through many corners of 6 layers of upholstery fabric without slowing down a beat (using a size 16 needle and a wider stitch, as advised.) Not only has it perform superbly so far (only a couple of weeks, mind you, so not sure about long term durability) but, after using nothing but older machines, I am greatly appreciating some of the (probably now standard) new-to-me features including the thread-cutter, see-through bobbin, 2 position spool holder, and the MUCH simpler threading sequence. The only feature I am not impressed with is the needle threader....I find it cumbersome so it is much faster for me to just thread the needle manually the old fashioned way. I have never sewn buttons via a sewing machine so can not comment on the performance of this feature. While researching I found many complaints about this machine's lack of speed control but I have had no problems whatsoever controlling the speed with the foot pedal. What I am concerned with is the durability of the foot pedal given how light and inexpensive it seems compared with the one included in the Singer 6251. I also found watching all of the instructional videos of the 4423 at SewingMastery.com very helpful before using it, especially since I was coming from a very old machine.
Mediocre, far from Heavy duty. As an experienced seamstress, I find this machine extremely mediocre. First of all horizontal bobbins are the worse and not long-lasting. Other their internal metal case, the rest of the machine is made with cheap materials all plastic. The light is THE WORSE I have seen in my entire seeing life, there are internal main pieces that in any machine would be metal and are plastic in this one. It's very noisy even after oiling it and any machine comes with a hard case but this one came with a cheap fabric cover. The backstitch button is in a totally unpractical place and will advise being VERY gentle with the 2 wheels on the front (to change stitches and length) because I am sure they will break in a few months. I am frankly disappointed by the Heavy Duty 4423. The pedal barely reaches the floor. Singer decided to economize not just on the electric power cord, but on almost all other features. Plastic and flimsy exterior. Disappointed with the quality of the stiches on simple cotton fabric, I can only imagine what will be with other materials. Still considering if I should return this purchase. I did not expect this from SINGER as I had a different model from the same company 30 years ago and there is no comparison in quality. Simple to use, but this is the only positive I have discovered so far.
