Brilliant little piece of gear!

This thing is built like a tank, and makes my A7iii fit into my hand so much more comfortably. The front/top portion is easily removed with two screws leaving it as basically just an L bracket. I purchased some pistol grip tape and used it on the battery door where my right little finger grips the camera. Strongly recommend this little addition!

Problem with flash photography

Except for protection, the front/top piece is useless to me when using flash. Any type of transmitter attached to the hot shoe blocks pretty much every mounting hole, which makes me think this would be better for video makers wanting to attach handles or monitors.Unfortunately, the bottom piece alone was not available when I needed this for a big job, and sending stuff back is often not worth the cost difference or hassle. So now I figure I'll use the top piece as a way to mount multiple items or adapters to the top of a light stand.Another really annoying thing is the inability to take advantage of the two extra screw holes (that prevent rotation) on the Small Rig cold shoe. I would have preferred the style where it's open underneath the battery door, but the model with that design has a grip that doesn't match seamlessly with the A7iii. I will say, though, that the hinge design is really robust. I was worried that it would break off easily, but it's actually somewhat difficult to open, but in a good way.I went with this model over a simpler L-bracket because of the extra grip space, which I love. It's a nice middle ground between small mirrorless systems and traditional DSLRs. The surface is only a tiny bit smoother than the A7iii grip, so I haven't felt the need to add any sort of grip tape as other have.I find the side piece really helpful when taking vertical shots. Even with it all the way in, that little extra space means I don't have to worry about my fingers blocking the screen. Of course, the main reason I bought this was to avoid having my camera hang sideways on my tripod's ball head for vertical shoots. In that regard, it has worked perfectly.In fact, the ability to quickly and easily move between vertical and horizontal shots has proven to be more useful than I would have originally suspected. And the entire setup inspires more confidence than attaching whatever base plate came with the tripod.So, if you're strictly a photographer using flash and don't need this item immediately, I would recommend saving $40 and getting the model without the front/top piece when it becomes available.

The Perfect Extension Grip for A7iii Exists

I managed to find this swiss army knife of camera cages after extensive research, and it has been my favorite piece of kit outside of my lenses. As a tall guy with huge hands, it has been difficult finding an extension grip that isn't a battery grip. This cage with the built-in grip extension and the adjustable L-Bracket is well built and perfect for large hands.

Two in one!

Initially I was going to get the other version of this which was basically the L bracket. I ended up choosing this one after researching and comparing the two.If you just shoot stills and nothing more than the standard is a bang for the buck plus the extra grip. As to why I picked this over the standard the versatility of this half cage is nice.The extra grip, L bracket, and extra mounts for mics, monitors, etc. three in one the cool thing about it is if you don't need the whole cage and just the L than you can unscrew the middle mount and save it when you do need it.Strongly recommend!
