I received my pair of socks through the Smartwool insider program and I have been extremely pleased with them! They are extremely comfortable to wear, and I found the extra cushion welcome during my 8 hour retail shift. I would say they fit true to size, I usually wear a size 8 shoe and the medium fits well. These socks do stretch out, by the second day i found they were fitting looser than before. they do affect the fit of your footwear and if recommend trying on boots with these socks as they definitely affect the fit of your footwear. I used these socks mainly in my daily life and I plan to use them during the winter in my boots to keep my feet toasty warm. I have recently been hiking a fair amount and I am one who waits before buying items so I don't end up with all the gear and no idea. I was holding off from buying hiking socks to ensure I bought the right hiking sock but I came to a crossroad that I needed to buy something to give me more comfort in my hiking boots and I turned to these extra cushion hiking socks as my first test and they have been a success. Smartwool socks seem to hold up a LOT longer than most other brands I have tried for overall everyday wear, and especially in resisting holes in the toe section of the sock. I recently purchased these "extra cushion" socks for winter wear around the house and the extra protection for trail hiking/backpacking. I love the durability and performance that Smartwool socks provide, and with all the benefits of wool without the scratch. And, you just toss them in the washer and dryer with everything else! Perfect.

I’m a woman with size 9 feet. I bought medium in these socks, which is what the size chart indicates. They are constantly sliding down in my boots. I wear them for farm work. I still wear them, but the slipping is a real annoyance. They’re not that warm either. I still get frozen toes in Oregon weather. Would probably try something else specifically designed for women’s feet next time.
I bought a pair online for my boyfriend for Christmas, and he loves them! He immediately put them on and now wears them frequently around the house since the winter temperatures are still with us. Also, the red pops of color are festive. We've loved Smartwool for years and these Mountaineer Maximum Cushion Crew Socks didn't disappoint! He hasn't worn them for a hiking trip yet, but I'm confident in their performance. (I don't wear anything but smartwool socks for hiking and I feel I may need a pair of the max cushion for myself!)
I've been wearing these Mountaineering socks for 20 yrs. The thickest plush I've seen. I wear these mens size Large super loose socks, tho I'm a women's 8.5 wide foot. The loose-ness is for early onset arthritic cranky feet and I wear them pretty much 8 months a year.Issues: for looseness, I must cut down a straight line down front of shin. Then fold them over. Overwise too tight on my calfs and it hurts my skin.Drying... I learned not to dry much in a dryer. Overdrying causes inner sock to get bumpy. Still usable, just not as soft or plushy. I dry in dryer about 5 min to take off pet hair, then hang dry socks.

Recently, they were no longer available at stores. When I inquired about a replacement type, I was informed that therre wasn't a replacement. Now 6 months later, I find the Hike Extra Cushion 'Classic' version in stores which is purported to be the same as the old Trekking. They are not the same. First, the Trekking ones were thicker and lost their padding after a long period of time. These new ones are less padded and lose their padding quicker. Second, the Trekking ones stayed put where these new Hike ones are more slippery and allow the foot to slide around in the boot and bunch up. There seems to be inconsistent changes being made in the production of this replacement. Finally, the website lists the Hike version as having the knitted in arch support I am accustomed to in the old Trekking version. Yet the latest pair of Hike I bought does not have this arch support. Again, this is inconsistency. I will now need to slowly evaluate other brands such as Darn Tough. I believe these decisions are being made (use of nylon and recycled nylon) for perception reasons and not for the ongoing quality of the product. Product quality should not suffer due to the inclusion of recycled content or else the carbon footprint is incresed, not decreased.
I used these on a summit of Lobuche, Nepal. Starting in the dark/cold morning I had G2 Evo boots (double lined), these socks, another pair of Smartwool Performance, Injinji liners and chemical toe warmers. My feet were warm! Not using these socks or the warmers but with the other socks and a pair of Lowa Renegade GTX my feet were cold on Kilimanjaro, which I didn't want to repeat in the snow.I actually had to remove these on the descent because as the day warmed and I moved more quickly my feet got too hot. The thickness is great but comes at a cost in terms of durability. I'm not planning on these lasting years, but even if these lasted one climb I consider them money well spent. Anything to avoid cold feet!

I bought these for winter hiking and I'm disappointed that they gave me blisters on my big toes because they're too big. I tried washing them in hot water and heat drying them to try and shrink them but no luck. I guess that's a good thing if you buy the right size. I've purchased Mediums before with no problem, as your sizing chart suggests for my size 7 foot. If there is a next time I will buy size small I guess. You need to get your sizing and/or your quality control right. Just saying.
