I purchased these socks in January of 2025. They are already starting to wear out at the toes. Very disappointing. The last batch of Smartwool socks also wore out at the toes very early. Smartwool used to be a good brand 15-20 years ago. I'm still wearing some Smartwool socks I purchased 20 years ago. I really wanted the REI version of these socks but they were out of stock. I will probably return these socks the next time I'm near a REI store.

Found Moosejaw by accident. What a great accident! The socks are awesome and a ton cheaper than other stores. My son suggested these socks for our trip to Alaska so I bought 1 pair through another site. Never had paid so much for a pair of socks. After wearing them there and here in Kansas, I realize what a great pair of socks feel like. Not only are they comfortable, they are the first socks ever to keep my feet warm and dry. I've always had cold feet in the winter but not this year. Great product! Also Moosejaw has fun and interesting customer service. Keeps you laughing.

BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL VERSION:Disappointed in quality relative to the originals, which I have had for years. Unlike the originals, the socks don't stay up. They seem to have less wool and/or weaker nylon or elastic than the original. Here is the current composition: Knit in USA of Imported Yarn: 56% Merino Wool, 11% Nylon, 31% Recycled Nylon, 2% Elastane. If this is different than the original, that may explain the issue I am having. I will not be buying these again unless this problem is addressed.

These classic light hiking socks are my favorite socks. I have worn them for many years with work oxfords (large animal veterinarian, standing on concrete floors of dairy barns many hours per day, rubber boots over shoes) and athletic shoes. They are the only socks I have ever worn that actually make my feet FEEL better. For use in hiking boots I prefer the heavier weight version, however.
I’ve been wearing smartwool socks since around 2000. These are just like the classic cut sock - they don’t squeeze tight around the arch like the older PhD series, so it’s not those. These are more of a loose sock, vs a form fitting one (which is their hike sock without the “classic” in the name). For daily wear, these are fine. There are times I prefer the PhD fit (the hike without “classic” in the name), those keep the sock fitted to the foot and it’s not as roomy - with motorcycle boots those are nice. These are better as a general hiking / work sort of sock, so they don’t restrict your toes. The heel stays in place while the end of the foot is roomy. I briefly considered the non classic fit ones for the daily stuff, but sometimes the PhD fit will bother me in ... MoreI’ve been wearing smartwool socks since around 2000. The heel stays in place while the end of the foot is roomy. I briefly considered the non classic fit ones for the daily stuff, but sometimes the PhD fit will bother me in the toes, depending on the shoes/activity. I know I can wear these all day and not have a problem, even though I prefer the fit around the arch of the foot on the other design.I am a size men’s 11 C width (per a brannock device I own). Size Large in these socks is fine on length, with a little to spare. not snug around the arch, but not loose either. New, they will feel a bit loose, wash them a few times, and air dry, and they are a tiny bit more snug (but not much).Toe is roomy, and the seam doesn’t rub on the top of the toes like some other designs of socks I’ve worn in the past.I prefer the padding all the way around the sock - if you opt for the light version, the top area of the arch of the foot and the tube part around the ankle won’t have the extra insulation / padding. What I’ve found is that when they get a little worn, that extra still makes the sock comfortable and it will still stay in place easier. They wick moisture away well enough in the summer, I wear them year round. Daily wear socks - I’ll buy a little over a week’s worth, which will last 8 years or so.Haven’t had these long enough to know the durability, but the last set is 11 years old, and I’ve had to sew those up at the heel, I tend to wear them around the house with no shoes on, and that’s a bit tough on them. The extra padding in the heel and the ball of the foot on those is almost gone, but they’re old.Hopefully, these will hold up as long as the last set - haven’t had them long enough to know yet :)
Buying socks in stores is prohibitive now that six are bundled together. For people who wear uniforms, I guess six blue socks has a purpose. When sock shopping gets frustrating I head for the Internet. SunnySports was a new vender I wanted to try. I needed to find a sock for a taupe suit and med dark brown wingtips. SunnySports actually had two brown color choices and I didn't have to purchase six. I found an incredibly close color match and the pattern was perfect. Problem was, when placed the order I chose color #2 instead - taupe. When they arrived the taupe were not in the pattern I fell in love with. They were totally different pattern sock. They are fine but not the A+ look I thought I had purchased. I can always re-order if my last minute mistake still ... MoreBuying socks in stores is prohibitive now that six are bundled together. I purchased both the full and extra cushion hike crew socks, which allows me to adjust to current weather conditions. Both socks are comfortably padded and warm. I do prefer the previous product packaging/labeling (hiking, trekking, mountaineering), as this is clearer and simpler. Socks can wear out a bit rapidly, but nevertheless Smartwool socks are my favorite and I recommend them.
I've been buying these socks for years and have loved them for their comfort, moisture wicking, warmth, and longevity. These, however, are not the Smartwool that I've come to know and love. One of the three pair had a hole in the seam right out of the box, and they pill like crazy, which is a new phenomena for me with this brand. I kept them and I'm wearing them, but I won't be purchasing them again. Makes me sad, because not only do I wear the hikers, I also wear their dress and casual socks. It's too bad that a brand that earned my trust over so many years managed to lose it in one fell swoop. On to the next.
I bought these socks for my son-in-law who lives in Florida and had never seen snow. He and my daughter were going to be traveling to Erie, PA, via Buffalo, after New Year's, so chances were good there would be snow and he'd want to spend time outside. I have Smartwool socks that I love (gift from another daughter) and I have learned that if your feet warm, none of you is! So I ordered two pair for my son-in-law. They were supposed to arrive in time for me to give them as a gift for Christmas, but unfortunately they got lost through the FedEx System. The woman I spoke with at your company was kind enough to arrange for a new order to be sent directly to him. Happy ending - he saw lots of snow, and loved the socks!
Never thought I’d be writing a review on socks. After a week hiking and climbing in the Tetons, I did a mental review of every piece of gear I carried and used. My Smartwool socks were at the top of my “gear I loved” list. I wear Smartwool clothing year round. Warm in the Winter and regulates moisture and heat in the Summer. Yep, I pay more for good socks. But I can’t remember the last time I suffered with blisters.
