It's hard to understand the high ratings and positive reviews for this product. It looks nice, but is definitely more bulky than necessary. The toaster often sends slices flying out, falling either in front or behind the toaster due to the force of the pop up action. This happens with all bread types - regular sliced, bagels and artisan loaves. Toasting can also be inconsistent, often with burned edges appearing or sides being toasted unevenly.I bought this especially for toasting artisanal bread due to the long slots. Shorter slices still need to be fished out with tongs as although the resting height of the bread is quite high, there's no way raise the toast up further to get shorter slices out easily. Love this toaster! Its retro design adds a colorful splash to the kitchen. The sturdy, well made, simple mechanics makes perfect toast every time. Regular medium toast with wholewheat grainy bread usually require a setting of 2. The toaster arrived quickly and was extremely well packed with good instructions. Also ordered the grill rack for for making grilled sandwiches. Makes perfect grilled cheese with minimal clean up. Well worth the high price.

Arrived damaged. Boxe had 2 giant holes that were deep enough to reach the toaster inside. The bottom of the toaster was cracked in several places.I have encountered multiple reviews where people show the box and toaster similarly damaged.I don't know what the reason is. Maybe there is a damaged batch that was received and is now being shipped to people. Now I understand why reviews for this item are so low across multiple websites.Be very cautious when ordering.

I purchased this toaster for my husband as an anniversary gift. It soon began only toasting on one side, not toasting evenly. By nudging the control just a bit it burned the toast. I have called, emailed and messaged Smeg repeatedly with no response whatsoever. I have now been trying to resolve the issue with CB, and no one will assist with a return. I wish I had read all of these prior reviews before purchase however, I had faith in an expensive product like Smeg. We are done with it and ready to just take it into a CB store and leave it.
I purchased one of these thinking a $200 toaster will last for ever and produce great results. After all my college toaster that was $15 many years. What a piece of garbage this has been. First, the heating elements are very thin and it does not brown evenly on both sides. Next, the Bread Platforms are flimsy and there is a very large gab between the platform and burner lending itself to bread getting wedged and catching on fire.(ours did)Last our lever stopped stayng down and there are forums all over the internet with the same issue. The support guy said they cant get the board.Do yourself a favor and avoid this lousy HUNK OF JUNK.
I purchased many items from smeg. This toaster, the teapot, the mixer, the espresso machine the frother. All expensive junk - not sure why Williams Sonoma is carrying this. To be fair, I always had a feeling that the sales folks at the store in Williams Sonoma were saying it is great while sending a subliminal message to stay away from it.So this toaster just shorted. Apparently the wires (the heating lines) tore and one spiked into the sliding system which caused a short. I saw that a few of the lines there are coming out and getting ready to tear. This is for that this toaster. Not cheap but is not backed by quality.The mixer i thought was ok not great but then I recently purchased an Ankarsrum (not sure why Williams Sonoma is not carrying this one) and ... I have own this pretty looking toaster for 5+ years. At times the toast feels the need to jump out of the toaster when done. I think that the toaster takes forever to brown. Easy to keep clean. This is not a cheap looking toaster. Very well made; minimal amount of plastic. Don’t really know if this goes south I would purchase this brand again.
I have the Smeg coffee maker and wanted the set.It really is beautiful. I have read many negative reviews and prayed I would not get a lemon as there are some good ones too. I ordered from Dillards and pick up in store. Service was great and 3 days later it was ready to pick up. Well sadly I got a lemon. Toasts on only one side burns on the other on 3. So I tried 2 and the same. 1 didn't toast at all. Users manual said add more cooking by pushing re heat so I did and the toast popped up and onto the floor. I'm returning but I re ordered because I really want this toaster. I'll do another review with the new one.
Good Points: It works! i.e. It makes toast.With the correct setting, it does not burn things - something you would think was a given in toasters, but our experience trying to buy another brand first says not.It is a variable thickness 2 long slots toaster, which is much more versatile for sourdough etc. plus easy use for crumpets etc. which is what we wanted and were replacing in our previous toaster of 25 years service.It does not short out our house fuses (unlike one similar from another make we tried!)It is robust, well made and looks good.Improvement Points: The price! Ouch!
