We bought this kettle four years ago, on the presumption that more expensive would mean it would last longer than all our previous kettles had. And it's a very nice looking item. It's exactly four years old, and the lid mechanism has broken. As my husband was a domestic appliance repair engineer before retiring, and still repairs most of our appliances, we bought the spare part. That proved impossible to fit, and the nearest repair shop is about 30 miles away, so we're not doing that. I'm disappointed with this kettle, I expected it to have a longer life, and it would be good to have the option of a repair without a travelling miles.

Literally the prettiest kettle on the market. Yes its overly expensive, that's no doubt. Is it worth if for the money....no. Is there anything that looks half as good.... nope. Every 4-5 years or so we just suck it up and get a new one as the bright white will yellow over time and look like the cream version. Also the paint will start to fail at some of the joints over a few years. I mean we use it x10-20 a day so looking at it that way it's great value for it's use. But still seems overly pricey compared to others. But then again, those looks xxxxVariable temp is essential (for us) with various teas and coffee/Espresso making. And the stay warm/at temp function is a useful addition to have. It plays a tune/tone when turning it on, odd how that's never mentioned. ... MoreLiterally the prettiest kettle on the market. The flat heating plate is notorious on all kettles to generate noise compared to a bare element.Look after it, wipe/Polish it and descale reg and it will last you. Will we buy another in a few years? You bet. Unless competitors stop making pig-ugly and overstyled alternatives :-(On looks alone it's a winner for us many times over......

The Smeg variable temperature kettle is a stylish addition to any kitchen, featuring a classic design with modern functionality. It allows precise temperature settings, perfect for different types of teas and coffees. The stainless steel body is both durable and easy to clean, while the soft-opening lid prevents sudden steam release. Though on the pricier side, its performance and aesthetics justify the investment. Overall, a great choice for those valuing both style and functionality.

It seems like the creators prioritized design over functionality during the development of this kettle. For example, with this kettle, you'll have to press the "Start" button *twice* to begin heating the water. This is because the kettle stays in Standby mode most of the time, from which it can *only* switch to temperature selection mode. You *can't* skip this step on your journey for the boiled water. Thus, the first time you press the "Start" (or any other) button, it enters temperature selection mode; then you need to press the "Start" button again to actually begin heating the water. And yes, the whole idea of having modes is a bit surprising. You can select the desired temperature only when the kettle is in temperature selection mode, not while the water is ... MoreIt seems like the creators prioritized design over functionality during the development of this kettle. For example, with this kettle, you'll have to press the "Start" button *twice* to begin heating the water. Admittedly we should have returned this product immediately the problems started, so please bear this in mind when reading this review. We purchased around three years ago.Within four weeks of use the paint started to bubble off ariound the rim between the lid and the kettle. This got progressivley worse until most of the paint was bubbled. This week the catch broke. We were not in the slightest rough with our usage of the kettle so we are suprised at the poor build quality: The catch is plastic, not metal. It simply is not up to the job.All in all, for a supposed top of line kettle with a supposedly superior brand, we are very, very, disappointed. We can only assume that quality control had completely broken down for our product and wonder if Smeg have simply outsourced production to the factory or applied theeir brand to a more or less generic product. In short, the brand is meaningless in this case.By comparison, we have another, cheaper, brand of kettle, which is better made and of metal construction. It has retained its looks and is still functioning fully and properly. We cannot recommend this product.
This kettle is a dream. The ability to select different temperatures, and the option to keep it at a specific temperature for 20 minutes, are both clever and useful. The kettle is stunning to look at and feels like the quality you expect and are paying for. The anti drip spout is amazing- when you pour the water into your cup it is so smooth. I know this sounds weird but if you buy one, you’ll see what I mean. All the controls are on the kettle base. The kettle lifts off the base to fill and pour.It makes some cute sounds when you make your temperature selections and when it reaches the selected temperature. I believe those sounds can be switched to silent if you prefer. One other reviewer mentioned that the ‘push lid’ to open the kettle to fill it, tends to ... MoreThis kettle is a dream. I believe those sounds can be switched to silent if you prefer. One other reviewer mentioned that the ‘push lid’ to open the kettle to fill it, tends to stick. I certainly haven’t had that issue so assume that must have been a one off. And another reviewer mentioned that the water level gage is difficult to see. I must admit that the gage could have been better and more obvious, but this isn’t a big problem. You can see the ‘max fill’ level when you open the lid, and I always tend to pick a kettle up to feel how much water is in it. Having said all that, the gage is visible, just not as clear as I’ve seen on some other kettles.I know these are expensive but I managed to pick one up on offer with a BNPL option with 25% back. Now I have it, I must admit that I’d have been happy with it had I paid full price. If you use a kettle regularly, go ahead and treat yourself. You won’t be disappointed.
Such a coincidence to read Gwerther Kernow's review below. The same thing happened with our first Smeg kettle - the enamel bubbled off around the spout and lid. This happened after only a month or so. After overcoming a fair amount of resistance from John Lewis's agents, we were allowed to exchange for a replacement. This was under two years ago and after using the kettle no more than three or four times a day over the ensuing period, the underside of the kettle was leaking into the plastic base containing the cable and it is therefore now not usable and we have replaced with another kettle. The only conclusion is that either the materials used and/or the build quality is not good enough. When we bought the kettle we assumed that Smeg was still being made in Italy ... MoreSuch a coincidence to read Gwerther Kernow's review below. The same thing happened with our first Smeg kettle - the enamel bubbled off around the spout and lid. The variable temperature control on the model I bought was worthwhile for some purposes, but this kettle has some drawbacks. 1. Its bleeping sounds can't be switched off so it will wake up the whole house if used in the morning. 2. The button on the top that controls the lid is temperamental - it doesn't really work unless pressed in a specific, unintuitive way - I am certain this is not by design. 3. Worst of all, 2.5 months after the guarantee expired, a large air bubble has appeared underneath the finish, near the top of the kettle. Very disappointing given the supposedly good brand.
I gave this kettle as a bridal shower gift. The bride did not open the box until she moved into her new apartment almost 2 months after gifting it to her. Upon unboxing it, the kettle had a very big air bubble underneath the paint and the bride immediately contacted me . The 30 day return policy has passed but Crate & Barrel customer service did a great job and still offered a refund for the product once returned back to them. For the price of the item, I feel it absurd that it comes defected. This is a Smeg issue, not Crate & Barrel's fault. Very disappointed in the quality of something so expensive. I expected more from Smeg. I would leave 1 star but Crate & Barrel has great customer service so I added that extra star. Makes me wonder, where is Smeg's quality ... MoreI gave this kettle as a bridal shower gift. I would think for the price tag, they would at least have quality control. I will not be purchasing Smeg products in the future. Very disappointed.
In love with this kettle, working pretty well so far, the overall classic retro look is amazing! I like the style so much, really this is one of the prettiest kettle I've ever had. This color is my favorite, I also purchased a toaster from Smeg in beige color, which I also enjoy so much because it has a huge slots, which can fir a bagel. This Kettle works very quite and heat the water pretty quick. Also the is a cool function - the ability to keep the variety of temperature you want for about 20 miutes, which is cool option, I do not use it so much, but still enjoy it sometimes. The lid opening is very convenient and safe. Just slightly press on it and it open very smoothly. The delivery was fast and packaging well, thank you:)
