After a girls Scouts meeting, Raina trips and falls, severely injuring her two front teeth. What follows is a long and frustrating journey, nearly a five year experience with dental surgery and orthodontists. This occurs at the same time as the onset of puberty, peer relationships in middle school and bullying. Raina just wants to be a normal sixth grader but she is left to deal with on again, off again braces, surgery, embarrassing headgear and even a retainer with fake teeth attached and on top of all that, there's still more: a major earthquake, boy confusion and friends who turn out to be not so friendly. The New York times described it as 'a story to comfort readers traversing the years between childhood and adulthood and named it as "editors" choice'. The book won the 2010 Boston Globe-Horn-Book Honor for fiction. Wonderfully illustrated and inked, great fun to read, a cute and realistic story line and a main character that any person will be able to identify with. Kirkus reviews called it 'irresistible, funny and touching with story writing and emotionally expressive character'. A Children’s Bookshelf Selection: Each month our editor’s pick the best books for children and young adults by age to be a part of the children’s bookshelf. These are editorial recommendations made by our team of experts. Our monthly reading list includes a mix of bestsellers and top new releases and evergreen books that will help enhance a child’s reading life.

My daughter was thrilled to receive this book which was recommended by her dentist after an accident. She has already read it three times and will continue to read it again and again. Easy read and enjoyable.

Telgemeier writes vivid, funny stories based on her own childhood, that Middle School readers identify with and enjoy. Highly recommended I got this as a replacement for a copy that was worn out by our readers!

This is a book my granddaughter and I are reading together. We just finished reading "Sisters". These are good books to read together and talk about. It makes for good one on one time. My granddaughter is nine and she is really enjoying them.

Great book!
22 April 2014

We bought this book for my daughter, who is in 6th grade, for her Easter basket. She had just gotten braces 2 weeks prior and we thought it was so cute! Didn't really know what it was about. Just saw the huge smiling face with braces and thought it was perfect for her. She's not a big reader but we figured for 10.00 it was worth the shot. Better than all that candy! Let me tell you, she didn't put it down!! She literally read the whole book Easter morning. I couldn't believe it. A solid few hours of reading and she was done! She absolutely loved it.

Great book, terrible condition of book
3 February 2019

It was an awesome book but the condition of the book was terrible. It was damaged and I asked to exchange it and turns out every book on the shelf was in the same condition. That's no way to treat books.

Great comic/graphic bio for kids

My daughter has struggled a bit with reading but loved this book and ploughed through it with relish. I love its real content, neither silly nor overly dark. A very good read too!

What a brilliant way to let kids know.... they are not the only ones going thru things! The author is really able to connect with many different scenarios in real life situations thru her own journey. My daughter AND son breezed thru it in one sitting- could NOT put it down and I had to see why! I read it one night when they had gone to bed. Made me laugh, made me cry, made me smile! Love this book and would definitely recommend to any child who likes to read. The comic book style makes it appealing to more kids as well!

My 12yr old has been wanting this book so I ordered it for her birthday and she read it within one day. She loves the whole series and is ready for the next one. Walmart always has great prices on these books. I always check their prices before going anywhere else.
