This is an extremely comfortable helmet. It fits just as well as the other high end Smith helmets. It’s missing the mark in a few areas though. First, at this price, it needs to come with a Fidlock buckle. Those are so much easier to use with cold fingers. You can’t even retrofit it.Second, the visor is very tight to the face. I wear small glasses and they don’t clear the visor when you lower it unless you push them in against the face at the same time. The visor should be engineered to fit over at least slightly larger glasses. You should test yours before you buy this helmet. The visor also is hard to swap for a different one. Smith has long since moved to very easy lens swap on the excellent goggles, but here you need a tool or at least a coin to unscrew the ... MoreThis is an extremely comfortable helmet. It takes 10-15 minutes to do and is quite fiddly. It also would be nice if you could get spare visors in the same color as the helmet, or if it was engineered to not include the color portion just to swap the lens. In addition, standard Gogglesocs won’t work on this visor. That also seems like something that could very easily be fixed with a slightly modified design. If these things were addressed this would be the perfect helmet. It’s close, but just slightly misses the mark in a few key usability areas.

Winter inevitably comes. Along with it is the need to continue riding the bike. The classic summer bike helmet just doesn't work in the wintertime as it's just too full of holes for ventilation. Enter the Smith Survey Snow helmet. It has enough ventilation to keep the visor from fogging, but not enough to make your head cold. It has better protection than ANY bike helmet. It keeps your ears warm without blocking exterior sounds. The flip up visor allows you to lift it up when needed even if you wear glasses like I do. The bright white color provides good riding visibility. In short, it's the best winter bike helmet I have found so far. Thanks, SMITH

I recently bought the Smith Survey Mips in Matte Black + ChromaPop Photochromic Rose Flash Lens. First, I love Smith helmets, and this one is no exception. Second, I love the lens - Integrated ChromaPop™ visor lens - great field of view with contrast, color, and terrain-enhancing clarity, as represented on this site. However, if conditions are windy or snowy (at all), snow and wind come in through various gaps and hit your eyes and face. I was skiing in a blizzard two days ago and it made it very difficult, plus the lens started to fog up. In addition, the lens - while amazing - is not great in low light or flat light conditions...and that's a big downer, making it really difficult to see the terrain. The salesperson who sold me the helmet misled me to believe that ... MoreI recently bought the Smith Survey Mips in Matte Black + ChromaPop Photochromic Rose Flash Lens. It's still a great helmet and the integrated visor/lens is super cool, but if conditions are not ideal be sure to prepare accordingly - bring another helmet and goggles.

I bought the Smith Survey Mips to serve as a winter bicycle helmet as the bicycle industry apparently does not consider bicycling to be a winter activity. The Smith Survey serves very well for this purpose. The visor fits well over my glasses and lets just enough air in from the sides to keep both my glasses and the visor from fogging up. When it rains I close the air vents and I stay dry headed unless it's really pouring, but for the most part my head stays dry. Also when it's forty degrees outside the visor keeps my eyes from getting blasted with cold air that otherwise would obstruct my vision. The ear warmers work very well for bicycling but don't block the sounds of traffic at all. In short the Smith Survey is a great winter bike helmet.
I have been skiing for 40 years and have owned countless pairs of goggles. These are terrible. Snow accumulates inside the lens and you have to stop (which means you have to take the helmet off) and clean out the inside of the lens. It's best to do this in the lodge so you can avoid having a head full of snow when you put the helmet back on. Very annoying. If you look inside on the upper portion of the lens where it meets the helmet, it looks like they put two vent holes. Normally vent holes on goggles have a very thin mesh cover on them to prevent snow from getting in. These don't. The helmet also has two vent holes in the front of the helmet. These can't be closed when you slide the vents shut. These two vents don't have any sort of mesh to prevent snow from ... MoreI have been skiing for 40 years and have owned countless pairs of goggles. These are terrible. I don't know if it's the helmet vents or the goggle vents that are letting the snow in. For $300 buck I'm not covering them with electrical tape to find out. Returning them after two powder days ruined.
I wear glasses! I bought this hoping I wouldn’t get fogged up anymore.Yes, I no longer have fogged glasses.Yes, it fits small. I wear medium and bought a large.Yes, try it on and make sure it fits your face and glasses.Yes, the product is comfortableYes, I ski in Tahoe, during some bad storms this year it worked well.Yes, smith has a great warranty and support. No,Yes, some snow might get in between you helmet and forehead. Wear a thin head covering.Yes, it doesn’t seal perfectly around your face like goggles.Yes, replacement visors are a thing if you can find them.Yes, smith seems to struggle with supply chain for replacement lenses.
Not having actually skied in this helmet, I am not sure if it has solved a chronic problem: fogging prescription glasses! Normal glasses worn under OTG style goggles will fog when the air gets humid and I start skiing hard. Google inserts solve some of this problem because they sit so far from my face but that introduces a new problem which is the Rx being off a little because of the increased "vertex" distance - that is, how far the lens are from my cornea. Because the visor lens does not seal around my face, the theory is that the increased ventilation will lessen the fogging problem. But that allows snow to get under the visor. So will the visor design be the lesser of two evils? So will the visor design be the lesser of two evils? What I do know is that the helmet fits well, is the usual Smith Optics top-shelf equipment, and EVO got it to me quickly. A true evaluation of the helmet would require that I slam my head into something hard which I hope will not happen!
I recently purchased the new helmet visor combo. I rode it in variable conditions including a big powder day. I have sinus issues and was looking for a solution to have less pressure from goggles on my face. The that manor the product worked great. The only challenges i had were on a big powder day. Due to the goggles not connecting securely to the face it had a tendency to get more snow that i would like. It did clear out easily. In less powdery conditions they worked great. I like the product but will probalbly return to my normal set up on big snow days.
This is a beautiful, sleek setup. Helmet fit is great. And it's true, the visor affords better peripheral vision than traditional goggles. That said, two issues that could break the deal: when it's snowy, the snow/ice comes into the visor and crusts it over. It's truly unusable in inclement weather, which you have to expect on nearly any day on the slopes. Other issue, the ear padding is so thick it's very difficult to hear conversation. I wanted some coverage for foul weather so ended up ripping out the padding while keeping the basic padding cover.
Super excited to try out my new helmet, what a massive disappointment. Had a perfect fresh powder day at the Canyons in Park City, UT on 12/8. Headed up the mountain and immediately started to accumulate snow on the inside of the lens before even getting off the chairlift. It got worse as I skied down. Snow and Ice packed the inside of the lens to the point I couldn't see out. The only way to clear the lens was to take the helmet OFF mid run and try and scrap out the snow and ice. Awful design. Every run all day was the same result. If it's actively snowing or you have opportunity to ski fresh powder leave this helmet at home.
