EDIT (FEB 5, 2014): Finished my 1 bottle of these softgels and checked my vit D levels end of last month. It is perfectly normal, so I know that this thing works. [I know mine does not stay normal without supplementing so this must have worked :)] And that is why I am changing my rating from 4 to 5 stars. A note for American customers - these are considerably bigger than the CVS or Walgreen brand softgels, but are still easy to swallow because of their form and texture. OLDER REVIEW: UK mostly has Vit D3 in tablets. But those are a bit harder to digest (their advantage lies in their being vegetarian-friendly). They are also more expensive usually. Though in UK Vit D3 is anyway more expensive than it is in India or US. I have issues with my digestion and so prefer to ... It may not necessarily be so for everyone but it is advisable to check your Vit D levels if you move between places with very different climates. It has a lot to do with maintaining one's immunity as well as good cheer (I remember reading that low levels can make one feel depressed). I usually also test my levels; and I take 2000 IU per day because that is what allows me to maintain the right levels. A good reason for monitoring blood levels is that it helps determine the right dosage for an individual. However, after taking Solgar I haven't yet checked my levels hence the 4 stars. Excellent product, does exactly what it says. Capsules are easy to take, they contain a high dose you need daily to maintain a healthy immune system, giving you a lift, and are cheap as chips. You get 3 months supply for 6 quid at the time i wrote this review , if you have Fibromyalgia or Gout like i do then these are essential supplements for the colder months. One thing thats very important however is that my GP said to me that you should only ever take Vit D tablets from November to April because the other 6 months of the year you get all you need from the sunshine.

Following a blood test with my GP I was advised of a vit D level of 26 nmol/L, which they classed as normal'. I soon learnt that this is actually seriously low and should be considered deficient. It has been suggested that vitamin D levels be 100 nmol/L. So, I decided to be proactive and seek out a suitable amount of Vitamin D to take to raise my own levels to something more optimal. A report titled Vitamin D and Health' by SACN (2016) indicated 1000 UI supplement would raise my level to around 50 nmol/L, and so these capsules fit the bill. They are easy to swallow, and good value. Vitamin D3 helps the immune system and I'd also come down with chickenpox (at 44 yrs!!) so I wanted better levels to cope with this stress on my body.

For most people it is not easy keeping on top of vitamin D levels in this country as the main source of it, Is the Sun. When it is rainy and cloudy most of the year, It can deplete the body's natural Vitamin D reserves, Leaving me feeling low in mood and lethargic. This high strength Vitamin D3 is the same strength as prescription grade D3, So I'm confident that this will keep my moods and mental health balanced through the year. I would recommend taking a daily dose of these tablets all year round if you are deeply effected by winter and low moods. Combined with a diet high in calcium and vitamin D, This will ensure that the body is boosted to a much more balanced state of health and mind.
Having just turned 70 I thought I needed extra Vit D to protect my bones, but was confused about the various different strengths. I bought these Solgar ones but, as I was already taking a multivitamin which contained a small amount of Vit D, I checked with a pharmacist. She advised me to ask my GP for a blood test first because Vit D is stored in the liver and not excreted as other vitamins - and can be toxic. I checked with my GP who ran a blood test and found that my levels are normal - in the middle. I'm not trying to scaremonger but would advise caution. I'd be interested in hearing what Solgar have to say since no warnings are given on the bottle (as for Vit A for example).
I believe that softgels are absorbed quicker than tablets as they take less time to dissolve. Each softgel contains 1000iu of vit D3. Recommended dosage: 1 per day hence they will last over 3 months. I think vit D is very important especially when living in a cloudy country like UK. We should all supplement with it right from the birth (appropriate product for age group of course). As we all know vit D is being produced by our body when skin is exposed to sun. Unfortunately where I live sun doesn't shine as much as I'd like, supplements of vit D are a must then. I recommend them to anybody, especially Solgar. Very good quality product in recyclable packaging (glass jar + metal lid)

I have been supplementing vitamin D for a long time, as I have multiple sclerosis, which is linked to poor absorption of the vitamin. I have been taking two of these daily, so the bottle is around six week supply, and at the current price (around 6.50) this is quite good value for money. I'm not sure I'd pay full price. However, they are still pretty easy to swallow, and tasteless.The beef gelatine in the capsule also makes them unsuitable for vegetarians or vegans, so this could be an issue. As with any supplement, check with your GP before taking.
Solgar is a good brand and one that we have used before. This is a good size pot that comes with a tamper seal. The product provides a good supply (100 tablets at one a day, giving over three months supply). The dose of each tablet is good. I find the tablets beneficial to me; particularly over the dark winter months. The tablets are okay to digest, with water I had no problems. I thought the product was very good value given the quantity; and the quality appears to be good. They are worth considering and persisting with if you see benefits.

If you were buying these just going by the title and you were a vegetarian 🌱 you would be upset because these are not suitable for vegetarians, they have got gelatine that is from cattle 🐄. You would not know this if you did not read the ingredients part of the description. I cannot comment on how good the tablets are because me and the wife are vegetarian so I have given 3 stars for the quality of the glass bottle and label, the very nice lid and the fact that it was sealed under the lid.
