I bought this to replace the pitiful speaker on my otherwise excellent Samsung TV.Set up was easy after i quit trying to connect the Sonos to a range extender network and connected directly to the main wifi network. But seems like it might be easier, simpler, if the volume control on the Samsung TV remote could connect to the Sonos also. Plus, then you see the volume level indicator on the TV output rather than just playing it by ear.OK, spent lots of time on the glitches. Once it was set up and working the sound quality is AWESOME! And, in the end, that's what really matters, right?Would definitely recommend this product.

First of all, I hate products which require you to download an app and make an account. It should work out of the box without needing to give the company all your personal information. Then, to make matters worse, the app wants permission for exact location at all times, WiFi information, bluetooth access (even though the product doesn't support bluetooth, despite claims to the contrary in the description) and local devices discovery. It also wants microphone access to setup. All of this invasion of privacy for what, exactly? To not even be able to discover the device in the app once it is fully setup. I tried factory resetting it several times over, each to the same result: it wasn't showing in the app to be able to use it with WiFi or Bluetooth. In short, companies should stick to the tried and true way of making products, where they just work when you plug them in. Leave the app nonsense behind, or at least as an option instead of being mandaotry.
I purchased this speaker to update our TV speaker. It wasn't too difficult to set up, paired easily with the older LG TV and Nvidia remotes. The digital audio cable took a bit of adjusting to get it to kick in, but all good now. We use it in a small suite, so I didn't want anything too large. The sound is really good, but there is a lack in complete sound which will require purchasing the matching sub. I intend to do that one day soon. Until then this one has improved the sound tremendously. The only reason for 4 stars is that I hoped it would have more depth to the sound. We recently watched Top Gun Maverick and I truly missed the deep sounds of the music and jets that make the movie so magical. My fault for not watching it on a more complete audio surround sound ... MoreI purchased this speaker to update our TV speaker. Sonos bills the Ray Sounder as a great choice for people who want big sound in a small space, but I have to tell you, it is great for big rooms as well. We have a 60" TV mounted above our fireplace in our main living room/kitchen area (open concept). We have found that some sounds and especially dialogue can seem a bit muffled or 'lost' in all that open room. We don't tend to watch movies and such in there, we have a multi-media room for that, but we do watch lots of news and my wife watches her reality TV shows in there, so lots of dialogue. The Ray product description talks about how it is tuned to help with voices and dialogue, and I have to say, Sonos and the Ray delivered in spectacular fashion. Everything sounds crisp and precise no matter where you are in the room or what you are doing. For that reason alone, the Ray is completely worth it for me.The Ray is also incredibly easy to set up. I was able to plug it in to the power plug behind the TV and slot the digital audio cable (fiber optic) without even having to move the TV on my mount. I had already downloaded the App to my iPhone right before opening the box and within a couple minutes I had the Ray up and running and was ready to 'tune' it for the room. Sonos has you hold your phone so the mic is up and then has you walk around the room sweeping it from high to low as it pings our a tone so that the software can figure out the acoustics of your room. It took me three tries to get it done (first I went too slow because I was trying to minimize the noise I made, on the second try I made too much noise because I was going faster, but on the third try I managed to do everything right). It is completely worth it to go through the tuning because I could tell the difference almost immediately. It really felt like the sound was being beamed right to my ears. I was as happy as could be with the set up and sound of the Ray and my wife was even impressed with the sound and she hardly notices that stuff.Unfortunately, the next day we started running into a problem. While I was able to get my Samsung and the Ray to talk that first day and was able to control the volume with my TV remote, it stopped working the next day and I had to go through the troubleshooting process. Got it to work again and my wife was happy. The next day, same exact thing. While I appreciate the the fiber optic connection for it's sound quality, and lack of delay, I'm really wishing that Sonos has put in an HDMI connection, because I have YET to have a problem controlling a sound bar through that way (though I HAVE had problems with sound synching through HDMI). The Ray is new and so is my Samsung TV so I'm hoping that maybe we might get this worked out with a firmware update to one or the other or both. It also wouldn't be a problem if all shows and commercials were required to be leveled to the same volume, so that you didn't need to crank down/up the volume all the time and could instead, just find the precise volume that works for you and let it be.Finally, I really hope that Sonos also makes a TV undermount for the Ray. It has one available to mount it directly to the wall, but I don't want to have to do that. Right now it is sitting on the mantle, which is fine in the short term but I would really like it slung underneath the TV so we don't have to see the cords. It is such a diminutive soundbar that it shouldn't need anything fancy or too bulky. I'm sure I could find something from a 3rd party but I would prefer to have one made especially for the Ray.All-in-all, I am VERY happy with the Ray. I eventually got my wife to put the Sonos App on her phone and she can adjust the volume there for the time being, but I would really like for Sonos to come up with a solution to utilize the remote we already have a bit better. For the price, the Ray is an outstanding addition to any TV setup and will vastly improve the sound quality of your shows regardless of the size of your room.
First the good points - it looks nice and when its working the sound is very good and the Service from John Lewis was excellent as usual. This is purely a product review. But, many people will not know the following:1. You may not be able to use your current remote to change the Sonos volume. Meaning you will either get up and do it manually OR use the Sonos App - yes you MUST have a smart phone to install & configure the Sonos/APP. I don't know if you can have the App on 2 phones - if not & the phone with the App is not present its back to manual changes for volume.2. You must have wifi. It will not work without a wifi connection and be carefull as BOTH the Sonos and the APP MUST be on the same network - it will not work if one is connecting to a wifi extender ... MoreFirst the good points - it looks nice and when its working the sound is very good and the Service from John Lewis was excellent as usual. When playing many TV channels audio and visual is out of sync. BBC etc seems OK but lots of other channels including movie channels have the problem. It's VERY complicated. The fault and resolution could be anywhere - broadcast channel, TV, Sonos, other. Sorting it out so that it works for every channel is a nightmare. I need to be fair here and say that other manufacturers seem to have similar problems but looking at comments on the web no where near as many as Sonos. If you do not research your TV and remote and these issues, or you are not technically competent this soundbar is not for you.PS my connection is as simple as could be - modern smart TV with optical cable direct to the Sonos Ray.
I bought the Ray to use with LG's latest 43-inch TV, in the UR9000 series. It seemed a decent pairing for use in an RV that couldn't fit anything much larger. However, I ran into a huge problem. The Ray has no method of integrating such that the LG magic remote can control the volume.Since the Ray lacks any sort of HDMI input, you're left with an optical connection only. Sonos' documentation (which their tech support kindly quoted when I reached out to them) alludes to the notion that there will be some sort of menu in LG's WebOS settings that will let you select a soundbar manufacturer, and that Sonos will be on that list, and that will fix the problem. That would be wrong. There's no such list in the current LG system. There's an on-off switch for an LG ... MoreI bought the Ray to use with LG's latest 43-inch TV, in the UR9000 series. There's no such list in the current LG system. There's an on-off switch for an LG soundbar control protocol, which apparently LG feels Sonos should be supporting, but Sonos doesn't seem to have heard about this. The Ray went back to the store, an LG soundbar with a subwoofer came home, for a little less money. The LG does take up more space, but obviously it does work with the magic remote, and it sounds a whole lot better than the Ray did.
Overall, this thing is better than I was expecting. It is a bit of a pain to set up. Even for a relatively tech savvy person like myself. But if you can be patient and figure out the work arounds for it, it’s amazing for the price and purpose its intended it for.The app for Sonos has always been a little clunky. I have 8 other Sonos speakers in my house. So I’m used to it. The optical only option is strange so it can cause some issues if you don’t have an IR remote. My tv I was trying to get it to work with had an RF remote so I had to program my tv to get the remote to adjust volume. The remote linking feature in the Sonos app did not work because I had a RF remote, It can be done though. Amazingly big for a soundbar of this size, I bought a small tv for my odd shaped downstairs living room and wanted something in the Sonos ecosystem to pair with it. I have the beam and the arc with the sub and I have to say this thing is pretty stellar on its own. I considered buying the sub mini for it but I have decided it’s just fine on it’s own. Plenty of bass (not home theatre level or anything) and for the space it’s in I couldn’t be happier with the sounds it’s putting out. Looks can be deceiving.
Sonos builds an ecosystem of soundbars, speakers & audio equipment that expertly distributes multi-room audio. They have established a large following of enthusiastic users who support the Sonos system design & use the Sonos phone app. "Ray", this new soundbar designed by Sonos, will be a big hit to those customers who have already invested in the Sonos infrastructure.Measuring only 22 inches wide, Ray is designed to enhance the sound of televisions & gaming consoles in small listening rooms. The audio is crisp & clear. There is no wireless or internal sub, so Ray will not dazzle you with rocking bass performance. It does, however, produce a punchy mid bass & a clear voice for its modest size.Surprisingly, RAY does not sport an onboard HDMI jack that is commonplace on Soundbars costing much less. Audio from your TV is connected via an IR Optical input jack. This old method of conveying audio limits the clear sound to 2 channels: no Atmos, Dolby Digital plus, nor DTS-HD, is possible. No remote control is included & RAY does not display an array of LED's through the grill cloth, the most common means of seeing what volume level to which your soundbar is set. My TV remote was incompatible with RAY, so I had to install the Sonos iPhone App to control volume, equalization, etc. in addition to the TV remote, which did not control the optical signal to RAY.CONCLUSION: RAY is the lowest cost, entry level Sonos soundbar. It looks great, is well built & is a welcome addition to existing Sonos users. However, without HDMI, a remote, volume indicator or subwoofer, Ray may not offer the best value for those not using the Sonos infrastructure.
