Decent speaker, some concerns

I wish the app could be circumvented for those not concerned with it. This speaker is capable of advanced voice functions through Amazon Alex or Google and an always on Wi-Fi connection. I was not looking for any of these features and in fact disabled Wi-Fi and deleted the app as soon as I got the device pairable over Bluetooth; my ISP has data caps so I try to limit the number of devices always connected (however insignificant they may seem). Lastly my impression is skewed by my use case so if the Wi-Fi, smart assistant, and fully featured app appeal to you, or you already have the ecosystem I think you may be very happy with this device.

Note - this is my first Sonos product. Sound quality is good compared to other similarly sized speakers, but doesn't "wow" me like experiences I've had with other Sonos products. Output is sufficient for a small room, but I've found sound quality seems better the further away you are from the speaker. Connectivity and setup with this speaker in general is a failure IMHO. Bluetooth is adequate but if I wanted a simple Bluetooth speaker I'd have shopped elsewhere. Why am I adding a "trusted" network to the device if I have to set it up as new each and every time? Likewise, services such as connecting to Spotify need to be re-authenticated frequently and without warning - your device will simply drop out of available devices in Spotify connect after which time to let the diagnosis party begin. Note - if you're having trouble the Sonos forums are your friend. Likewise if you're looking to buy, read the aforementioned forums prior to making your decision. Overall, a decent speaker but would NOT recommend if you aren't already invested in the Sonos ecosystem.

I had high hopes for this
1 August 2022

I really wanted this to be good, and as far as sound quality goes, it's decent. Unfortunately, that's all the positives I can mention. The battery life is atrocious. I found that every single time I wanted to use it, the battery was dead. I could have it fully charged at 11pm, try to use it in the morning only to find it was offline and the battery had died. By the time it was charged, I hoped it would integrate well for multi-room. It didn't, and would only play back for a maximum of 10 seconds. To troubleshoot, I could move it closer to the router, but it didn't seem to make a difference. I could only really get it to work when it was the ONLY speaker connected in the app, but even then it would frequently drop out and show as offline. As far as airplay goes, it was fine, but at that point I realised that to keep this going felt like it needed TLC and everything to be optimum, but even then it seemed like it was very prone to randomly disconnecting. As a portable speaker this should be great for picking up and taking with you to play music wherever you are, but for all the 'Sonos' functionality such as multi-room, app connectivity etc, it just doesn't do them. Hence why I'm reluctantly returning mine. As for the price, I'm sure there are many more Bluetooth portable speakers which sound as good and have a much better battery life for less money

Nice add on to Sonos ecosystem - scope for improvement
7 September 2022

I would definitely only recommend this to a friend who already has a Sonos Ecosystem at their place and looking for a portable speaker. It would be good if some minor improvements (points listed below) are done for this to be a great stand alone bluetooth speaker competing with other big players..1. While the audio quality is great, the volume and bass is not that powerful and needs to improve. It is okay if that means it requires a change in the design (size). Currently it is too tiny and it can be one size bigger (still less than Move).2. A separate easy to press bluetooth button would be nice and currently it is inconveniently combined with On/Off button.3. The buttons both the on/of and volume are too hard to press and needs improvement - I understand we can use the voice assistant, but still my suggestions is to improve this a standalone bluetooth speaker and attract more customers into Sonons ecosystem.I have a complete Sonos ecosystem at home including Arc, Playbase and even Sonos Amp and wouldn't mind the above issues. But as I said "Sonos Roam" could very well be your tech bait for inviting new customers into Sonos ecosystem.

Not sure I would buy again, not returning it either

I have been a Sonos advocate since the beginning, with my first multi-zone system purchased in 2002. At one point, I was a reseller even. So I have considerable experience with Sonos. I have worked in technology all my career. So it is safe to say that I absolutely know what I am doing. But I have to be clear about a fundamental mistake that Sonos seems to continue to perpetuate. Having S1 and S2 is simply an awful decision. Consumers do not want or care to know the difference. Yet, Sonos continues to separate the two, and forces consumers to sort it out. This must be a huge burden on Sonos' support operation, and I imagine the main source of returns. The limitations of the early-gen hardware CAN be coded around! The limitations of the early-gen hardware CAN be coded around! If you need to limit some components then do so-but do not put that burden on your customers. Also, setting up the little Roam should have taken less than a minute. But since I have S1 at home, I had to wrestle with setup on S2-and all I wanted to use the Roam for was bluetooth! That should not have been necessary. For those of you who aren't comfortable with multiple add/drop and factory resets, nor patient enough to deal with those idiosyncracies and fiddly bits, this is not the setup for you. If you already have an S2-based system, then you're probably going to be just fine. That said, the sound quality out of this tiny thing is really good (for its size). I am using this as the main audio in my track car (removing the built-in) for when I'm not on track. The Truesound adaptations are pretty good, even though I had hoped for better. And now that I have it all bluetooth-setup, it is super easy to use.
