I bought this lens out of curiosity. It was actually the first thing i bought when i decided to switch from amateur equipment to pro or near-pro photography equipment. This lens is too short (in focal length) to realy magnify things.... and too soft at 2.8 to really be of any use at that aperture. Maybe I should have returned the lens to the seller because the motor squeaks all too often during auto focusing but that is a different story. Steping down the aperture to something like f18 sharpens the image, border to border but you need a very well lit subject or a huge exposure time to compensate for such a small aperture. Maybe i got a bad copy of this lens, who knows, can't find anything defective about it, motor does focus fast and easily despite the squeaking sound and image is indeed sharp within a narrow area around the focusing point, so i dont think i have an issue of bad focusing.... it just gets soft all too soon outside the focusing circle at f2.8 making me wonder how can this aperture be usefull unless it is a really small flower or pebble you are aiming at.....

As a previous reviewer stated, this cover does not fit correctly.Don't buy it for the Sony 70-200 2.8 II lens.Seems like a lame re-purposing of a previous design because the manufacturer has not put in the effort to make a new one.The lens hood section is of the tulip design - the Sony lens hood is round.The clear plastic areas do not align with the adjustment buttons on the lens.I bought the similar item from this manufacturer for my Sony 200-600, and it works great.This one does not...save your money.I'll be returning it.

I use this lens on my A99, and shoot it at f2.8 or 4 whenever possible. It's tack sharp, from f4 on down, and f2.8 is as sharp or sharper than either the new Canon or Nikon 24-70 f2.8. This is also an excellent portrait lens for in the field (I use its shorter Zeiss counterpart in the studio), but it is large and heavy. The color rendition, contrast and sharpness of this mid-tele rivals that of several primes due to its new coatings. Flare and CA are non-existent. The weather-sealing is excellent, and tempts you to take it into the rain-forest (and make you trek with it for hours) for some awesome images. The autofocus is silent and near-instant, great for sports tracking, hot-air balloons, concerts. I've wanted this lens for my Sony Alpha camera for a long time now, but couldn't handle the asking MSRP. This "gently used" lens is perfect. Great condition and I expect years of good use from it. Plus, I can use my 1.4x tele-etender and still have auto focus capability which my 100-400 seris G lens doesn't allow.
Bought this lens for my A7Rii it's the A mount so I needed the adapter. Got the LA-EA3 adapter after reading reviews that this one works flawlessly and I wasn't disappointed. The lens is fast at focusing and pin point sharp. Used it at a circus performance and the 2.8 is awesome at getting the lighting spot on in Aperture mode. Definitely not disappointed with this purchase.
Super fast, accurate and quiet focusing. Images are tack sharp from wide open. The latest coatings, internal focusing motor and weather protection makes the extra $1,000 worth it. A note of caution: this lens will not auto-focus with the older, Minolta (except D version) teleconverters, as the lens has its own focusing motor. I had to buy a new set, that adds another grand to the affair. Fortunately, the new Sony TC's are backward compatible (except for 200mm/f4 macro).

So far so good. Have only been using this lens for a few days. So far so good. I'm using it on a Sony A7ii with both auto and manual adapter from fotodiox. I'll update in a week or so.
An upgrade on the original excellent lens. The weight-saving is a nice bonus but the real selling point was the ability to close focus on friendly wildlife. I no longer have to worry about animals coming too close to manage in-focus pictures.Pictures of a squirrel taken yesterday and a vixen taken today; both full-frame.
