I bought the a6700 after extensive research and I have to say that it has exceeded my expectations in almost every way. As an amateur photographer I am so pleased with the image quality that I no longer covet a full frame camera and will enjoy this smaller/lighter device and lower cost lenses. I cannot believe the extensive and advanced features that Sony have managed to include, not least that it has changed the way I capture images and video. For example, I now shoot action in aperture priority thanks to ISO AUTO Min. SS and the excellent focus system with subject recognition allowing for practically full-time wide and/or zone shooting. Video capture really is next level with 4K 10 bit 4:2:2 in S-Log 3 producing outstanding results. I rate this camera at 4.5 out of 5 as I have one (just one) issue, the missing 25p frame rate in PAL H.265 (XAVC HS 4K). This means that I have to record video in H.264 (XAVC S 4K) unless Sony update the firmware. Make no mistake, this is a feature rich device and to get the best out of it will require some dedication. but the available customisation of buttons, dials, memories and user menu’s allows this camera to be set up exactly how you would like it. The six (reduced size) images attached to this review were taken with the Sony 18-135mm lens and the last two images show compare ISO 100 with ISO 12800 (after 50% denoise).

This is my seventh Sony APS camera and each one is better than the last one. I shoot mostly fashion and glamour and shoot up to 1000 images per week, usually on the Sony full frame flagship A1 camera. Other than a smaller sensor, the handling and results seem to me to be equal to the more expensive model that is over four times the price. The focus including the eye focus is greatly improved from the previous models. The color is great as is the resolution on the sensor. On my computer monitor I do not see a difference from the Sony A1. My favorite lenses due to quality are the Sony 18-105 f/4 OSS G lens and the Sigma 56 mm f/1.4 lens. I have many 20" x 30" prints from these cameras that are tack sharp. The only negatives are the total lack of battery charger ... MoreThis is my seventh Sony APS camera and each one is better than the last one. Also the menu is quite complicated although being a Sony shooter for so many years I did not have any problems with it.In summary this is an outstanding camera capable of truly professional results. The handling and images are equal to the heavier, and more expensive professional flagship cameras. I am considering making this my every day camera.

This is a hugely capable and very responsive all-rounder that now coalesces all the excellent features from around the Sony stable into one compact package.I bought the A6700 primarily as an accessory for my Sony G 200-600mm to get the maximum out of it and it does that handsomely. The animal-tracking AF is amazing and has the parameters to fine tune it for all situations. As a result my number of keepers has increased dramatically. The fully-articulating screen is a very important feature for me and I missed it from my days with the R1. It's great to have it back and I'm not much disturbed by it not being on-axis - it's just like using a video cam - no problem.Screen resolutions are good and manual focus is far easier than it used to be because of it. The touch controls work well and are reasonably responsive. I'm using them more, especially when the screen is folded out and easy to access. There is plenty of display customisation. The redesigned grip is also very welcome and while I needed a baseplate attached to the A6000 to provide support for my little finger, I don't need one with the A6700. However, the on-off switch is ergonomically poor with a tiny little pip to operate it and an awkward location when in the off position. I would have much preferred the solutions used on the F828 or the R1.The IBIS is nice to have and allows shooting hand-held down to 1/15th sec. with my Touit 50M but I never had problems without it for the shooting I do.The improved menu system, focus bracketing, compressed lossless RAW and front control dial all make this a great piece of equipment. I'm going to enjoy learning and using it very much.

I really wanted to like the a6700. I loved the way it feels in hand. The grip is fantastic, autofocus snappy and depending on the lens - the camera is very portable. There was so much potential, and yet I feel like there were cost cutting measures that aren't justified for the price point. The unboxing experience was very disappointing. There was no charger or charging cable included. The neck strap was wrinkled on the edges which made it uncomfortable to the touch, and definitely not something I wanted to wear. I went ahead and purchased a third party camera strap and charger (which ended up making this camera more expensive for me than better alternatives that I considered).I purchased the camera bundled with the 16-50 kit lens since I wanted something small ... MoreI really wanted to like the a6700. I went ahead and purchased a third party camera strap and charger (which ended up making this camera more expensive for me than better alternatives that I considered).I purchased the camera bundled with the 16-50 kit lens since I wanted something small and portable, however I saw that this lens was just not going to work for me after the first several outdoor photos. There was a certain softness of both the subject and background that I didn't want, and the quality itself did not feel especially sharp. I immediately switched to my 30mm Sigma lens, and the experience was immediately better, yet I still wish I had the smaller size of the kit lens.My major disappointment was with the button quality. The left button on the control ring felt less responsive than the rest. It felt to me like the travel was shorter, and there wasn't much tactile feedback depending on which angle I pressed it from. This made looking through photos unpleasant, as I'd often scroll through two photos at a time instead of one. I started rotating the ring itself or using the touch screen to deal with this issue, but I don't think that should be necessary for such a new camera. The camera would get pretty warm when shooting photos (and short video clips), but I don't think that's necessarily a con. I didn't put it through its paces however, so I'm not sure how much warmer it gets.I also noticed that I had around 5 bluetooth devices with the camera name in my phone (iOS), and I wasn't sure why new ones were being created. I only set this camera up once.Overall I felt disappointed as I really wanted to like this camera, but the experience just wasn't there for me.
I've been using this camera for about 10 months now, and overall I'm very happy with it.I wanted to upgrade to a camera with IBIS, but didn't want to move out of the Sony APSC ecosystem and start over from scratch. There are some features I'd change, but these are mostly personal preferences rather than any sort of failing in the camera itself. The camera is easy to use, has every feature a hybrid user could want, produces excellent results and has incredible autofocus.I use it for photography only, and can safely say (living in Nevada) that it won't overheat when used for this purpose. The only niggles are its rangefinder design (redundant in world where lenses are larger than cameras), its lack of a 2nd SD card slot and the lack of a decent battery ... MoreI've been using this camera for about 10 months now, and overall I'm very happy with it.I wanted to upgrade to a camera with IBIS, but didn't want to move out of the Sony APSC ecosystem and start over from scratch. The only niggles are its rangefinder design (redundant in world where lenses are larger than cameras), its lack of a 2nd SD card slot and the lack of a decent battery charger. The new smartphone app is good, but it's still somewhat prone to disconnects when syncing with the camera. The menu system is better, but then I never found the old one difficult or all that complex. I do like how easy it is to bring up commonly used functions I don't necessarily want programmed to buttonsIt has plenty of dials and buttons, all of which are programmable and its recall system offers plenty of options for presets, which can be setup for photography and video separately.I would not hesitate to recommend this to someone that already has a large number of apsc e-mount lenses.

Its small size and weight, compared to some other mirrorless cameras, means I can carry it around all day without wrist, arm, or neck fatigue! Its fast, responsive autofocus and deep buffer, allow me to capture shots like the brown pelican in flight, shot with the Sigma 100-400(C) at 400mm, or the pelican splashing around in water, shot with the Canon 70-300 MkII at 300mm on the Sigma MC-11 EF-E adapter. It produces clean, high ISO images, like the Crested Caracara and Snowy Egret, both shot using the Sigma 100-400(C) at ISO 1600. And when paired with the Canon EF 100-400L MkII on the Sigma MC-11 adapter, autofocus remains fast, accurate, and background bokeh is beautiful with that lens's f/5.6 max aperture, as seen in the close up of the Yellow-crowned Night Heron. The biggest drawback to the camera that I've experienced, so far, is the low resolution monitor and viewfinder combination. Checking focus on either of those, as I did with the high-stepping Bald Eagle (Sigma 100-400(C) at 400mm), convinced me that I somehow missed focus, but when I saw the shot on my computer screen, I breathed a sigh of relief! I guess this is why Sony hasn't given the A6700 the flagship label. In every other regard, though, I think this camera is flagship worthy, and certainly punches way above its price point in terms of size, weight, versatility, quality, and features.
I really like my a6500, but, after my spouse got another brand's model with focus tracking, I was envious of their results imaging birds. After reading several reviews and deciding I could afford it I added the a6700 to my bag and retired a NEX-7 and its very different menu system from its duties as backup camera.Learning to use the focus tracking required browsing, reading, video watching, and a bit of trial and error--as usual, the manuals explain how to set each feature, but not when or why you would want to; this is NOT a Sony-specific issue. The focus tracking isn't perfect, especially when the bird is tiny in the viewfinder or much of it is initially deep in dense foliage, but my percentage of acceptable images is significantly higher and my frustration ... MoreI really like my a6500, but, after my spouse got another brand's model with focus tracking, I was envious of their results imaging birds. BTW, when set to bird eyes the a6700 still does a good job with mammals, butterflies, reptiles, and fungi. While I do carry a second battery, I have yet to require it during a full day of use. Comparable days with my a6500 would have required at least one battery change. The enhanced video capabilities are wasted on me, though the reviews were ALMOST enough to get me to upgrade to a video-friendly ball head and give it a go.
I purchased a Sony a6000 roughly 6 years ago for its small form factor. I wanted a camera that was super easy to carry so I'd always take it with me where ever I would go, and I did. It made me fall in love with photography again and use my camera a lot. So, when the a6700 came available, the upgrade just made sense, even at the price. Having the same form factor (slightly bigger in good ways), gave me the comfort of knowing I wasn't buying something that would sit on the shelf. Having all the bells and whistles on a new camera is great, but worthless if it was too cumbersome to walk out the door with it. So if you're new to the a6000 line of cameras, you'll see similar reviews on these small package, high quality cameras being so great for traveling. The second ... MoreI purchased a Sony a6000 roughly 6 years ago for its small form factor. So if you're new to the a6000 line of cameras, you'll see similar reviews on these small package, high quality cameras being so great for traveling. The second reason for the upgrade can be easily summarized by the crazy amount of new features this camera offers for photography and videography that used to only be found of Full Frame higher end cameras. The one in particular to me was the insane speed and accuracy of the Auto Focus capabilities. You can chose your subject in the menu for added accuracy and get locked on to your subject or subject's eye, and keep it there for multiple shots. I'm still blown away at how easy this camera is to use and the details I can capture with it.If you are new to Sony Alpha Cameras, then another big plus, is the lens options. From the APS-C to the Full Frame lenses, they all use the same E-Mount for lens connection, meaning you can invest in lenses that are universal in the Sony Alpha line, should you buy another camera or upgrade within the line, like me. I will continue to use both cameras for many years but have comfort in knowing that if I ever decide to upgrade again, the money I've spent on lenses won't be lost. (There are differences in APS-C and Full Frame lenses in how they function on different bodies, so do the research before you buy to get the best use out of the lens. It’s ideal to use APS-C on APS-C bodies, same with full frame, but it is capable enough to call them universal)I've added pics below that I've taken with various APS-C lenses, which all take advantage of Sony's insane auto focus capabilities. First, I will state the things I really liked a lot about the Sony a6700. Battery life - outstanding, 4K video (2-3 hrs), photos (never died)5. Heat, if you keep the flip screen open, this camera does not overheat6. Outdoor (sunny) and well-lit/studio photos and video are outstanding for an APS-C camera-What I did not like about the Sony a6700:1. The Sony a6700 delivers terrible image quality in any light other than direct sunlight or well-lit/studio situations. Any type of indoor shooting situation that doesn't involve studio lighting or even outdoor photos under overcast skies will result in TERRIBLE image quality from the Sony a6700. The images for both photo and video degrade significantly (lose color, detail, and clarity) under even the slightest of challenging light situations. I did not mange to expose one usable shot or clip under any type of challenging light with the Sony a6700. Shooting in SLOG3 and grading the footage did help some, but not enough to make the shot(s) usable. If you shoot indoors, I strongly advise against purchasing the Sony a6700.2. Twitchy exposure settings. I know how to properly expose photo/video and I know Sony quirks when it comes to exposure. Still, I had a lot of difficulty obtaining decent exposures from the Sony a6700 in any light other than direct sunlight or well-lit/studio situations. Indoors, the camera delivers two types of shots...under-exposed, and over-exposed...with nothing in-between no matter the settings.3. Fast action or sports shooting is not an option. Don't even think about it...not even in good light, just don't do it. The Sony a6700 is utterly incompetent when it comes to shooting any type of fast action or sports. I have actually seen better footage from a web cam when it comes to fast action and sports. If you shoot any type of fast action or sports, I recommend purchasing a different camera than the Sony a6700.Personally, the deal-breaker with the Sony a6700 is image quality. It is only good in ideal light. The overwhelming majority of shooting situations will involve low light or challenging light situations. Therefore, the Sony a6700 will not perform well in the overwhelming majority of shooting situations. That's it, that's the deal-breaker. The fact that the Sony a6700 can not perform well in low light or challenging light means that it simply is not a good camera for most situations. Low light performance is an essential requirement in ANY modern mirrorless camera. The Sony a6700 includes every feature I could ever want, except good image quality in the majority of shooting situations, and this is why I am exchanging it for a different camera.I hope this helps those persons searching for the right equipment and tools to help capture their valuable moments with. In my opinion, the Sony a6700 is definitely NOT the best choice when it comes to image quality, and you should keep searching. Good luck!
