This camera is the tops to track birds in flight, even with the subject coming towards you. It's fast and reliable. The only downside is the electronics are very fragile so don't flip your screen out near splashing water! The camera is perfect for my slim hands, but can't comment on how a bear-paw holder would feel. The menu is very well set up to find something fast and easy without endless scrolling. No point in having twice as many pixels if they ain't in focus. This camera will focus on all sorts of things that would defeat normal AF and can track it all the way across the screen. Centre focus really is right tight in the centre. Flexible spot is good for focussing off centre. Tracking focus is outstanding. It can even focus on midges floating around in the sunlight.More pixels would have been good, but we can't have everything I guess. As it is the camera produces superb images, accurate colours can shoot in light that would be too weak for a lot of other cameras.

I've moved over to Sony from Nikon because primarily, I wanted to lighten up the load I was carrying on weddings, and was excited to use the incredibly eye auto focus system and silent mode with the high end Sony's. Electronic shutter/ silent mode is a dream to use during wedding ceremonies. Overall, this camera will not disappoint. It's great for all the reasons I wanted it for - lightness, quietness and great auto focussing. It meets nearly all my needs. I've not yet found it as good as I'd expected in low light, even with good prime lenses, and some of the ergonomics need adjusting, with a few key buttons being slightly larger/ more raised on the body. Really allows you to be efficient with your time especially if you have multiple things to photograph in a short amount of time.My only gripe is the weather sealing on this camera is less than idea, and definitely a step behind the Canon and Nikon pro body equivalents. It also doesnt have a built-in grip like the Canon and Nikon pro bodies.That being said, when the A9 is on sale for $3500, its about half the cost of a Nikon D5, and from a pure performance aspect, the A9 can at least match if not outperform it.
Very good build quality but not the versitility and resolution that I was after. Needs to have the ability to employ CFS Express cards like the A1 and a somewhat larger sensor. Electronic viewfinder was hard to look through at times due to the low resolution. You get used to it after a while though and you subconsiously learn to recognize subjects better after time. Although it has animal and human AF tracking it lacks dedicated bird eye AF which is a core feature for someone who is a wildlife photographer. The capture rate is 20FPS which is plenty fast for a person fresh off of the DSLR market. I found the placement of the buttons and knobs to be very intuitive to my way of shooting. I was at one with this camera very quickly. This camera did heavy duty on my trip and held up very nicely.I added a sigma lens converter for my existing Canon lenses and while it works very nicely, the lenses don't marry up with the camera perfectly enough to shoot high action with the converter. But for slower moving or still subjects, the lens converter works perfectly. The camera shoots sharp. So my Canon lenses are still usable, just not for all shooting situations.I'm still getting to know this camera but for me so far, it's been a very worthwhile transition of brands.B&H got all of my ordered equipment to me very quickly even during this pandemic...a very appreciated thing since I had an upcoming trip. As expected, the A9 is a very capable professional camera. I bought it for its low-noise, high ISO performance, mainly to cover concert venues, rodeo, basketball, roller derby and polo. I use it with the 24-70/2.8, 80-200/2.8, and also the 24-240 and 100-400 Sony lenses. You can set your shutter speed as appropriate for the action and let the ISO run as high as ISO 32,000 with excellent results. The noise is remarkably low and can be handled in post. The A9 focusing is great in low light and focus tracking is also very effective. The electronic shutter is very fast and silent, the mechanical shutter is not loud with no mirror slap, and the buffer is big enough for high-speed shooting. The EVF requires a bit of start-up time, so it's not as quick to fire up (as a ... MoreAs expected, the A9 is a very capable professional camera. Even the digital in crop feature is useful at some sporting events, increasing the range from 400mm to 600mm in an instance. I've dabbled a little in the 4k video and to say i'm highly impressed is an understatement. Handheld video using the sony's 5 stop in camera images stablisation is impressive. Something I am more and more being ask to do. There's so much more I love about the a9 but the last thing I'll mention which is another show stopper for me is the no black out shooting. Being able to watch the action continue as you shoot is weird at first but now I couldn't live without it.All in all I couldn't be happier with my choice to swap from Canon to Sony and whilst using their flagship cameras isn't cheap, finding the right deal at the right made the whole switch extremely good value for me and my whole camera bag is over 5kg less in weight now too. Mirrorless is the future and to a certain extent the a9 is somewhat future proof for everything I'll need now and for years to come.
Subject tracking including continuous real-time eye detection are CRAZY good. And totally silent shooting is a bigger benefit than I anticipated. 20 frames/sec with full auto focus is great for sports, but the subject tracking and silent shooting are useful for many types of photography.Shooting indoor events is so much more fun when I don't need to worry about the sound of a mechanical shutter or the strobe of a flash. With the A9, I can also get by without a flash - it takes great photos up to 1600 ISO, good photos up to 3200, and if I plan the subject composition/framing correctly I can use even higher ISO, so goodbye flash. With the A9, people are still aware I am taking pictures but most people do not seem distracted by it.It is expensive, but if you can live without the upgrades Sony introduced in the A9m2, then this relatively new model is a great option.If you read old reviews (before March 2019), be aware FW upgrades made the tracking functions work much better than in the original release. Recent FW also increased the shots/sec when using mechanical shutter, but honestly unless you are using studio flash there is no reason to ever use mechanical shutter with the A9. Just read the reviews of A9 performance with fully electronic shutter - it is unlike any other camera on the market.Until I started shooting without the noise of a mechanical shutter, I didn't fully realize how obtrusive the shutter sound can be.Compared to A7m3, the A9 is of course more $$ but worth the extra money if you can afford it.A7Rm3 is great for image quality, but not in the same class as the A9 or A7m3 for subject tracking.With recent price drop the A9 price is comparable to the A7Rm4, so in that price range you can choose between higher Mpixel count of the A7Rm4 and the crazy great subject tracking and totally silent shooting of the A9.A9 gets good reviews for both photo and video quality, but be aware it does not support video profiles. I found the video quality was more than good enough for pro-sumer use, and not needing to mess with video profiles will make my modest color grading workflow more efficient.With the addition of MY MENU feature, Sony has finally addressed the long standing issue with finding the settings you want quickly. You set it up once, and then it is easy to find all the settings you decide are important for your personal style of shooting.Summary:Now that I've started using the A9, cameras with flapping mirrors and slapping shutters seem unrefined.
