The premier standard-range zoom for Sony cameras--the Zeiss 24-70mm is fast, accurate, and sharp. It is a very heavy chunk of glass, but not heavy enough for you to have trouble carrying it around all day. The autofocus is surprisingly quick and quiet. Even better, the fast f/2.8 aperture operates throughout the entire zoom range.

Having had this lens for getting on a a couple of years now and owning the entire Zeiss line up i can honestly state that this lens lives on my camera! For a zoom lens, sharpness is truly amazing as is the colour and tonal range. Shooting a lot live bands in terrible lo-light conditions, one cannot fail to be impressed by the light gathering capabilities of it's wide aperture and the SSM makes short work of keeping up with fast action too!!! Build quality is nothing short of what you would expect from the legendary Zeiss specifications, although weather sealing would be a welcomed addition to any future updates - That said, i've used this lens in many torrential downpours at music festivals, and to the lens's credit it has held up to everything thrown at from rain, ... MoreHaving had this lens for getting on a a couple of years now and owning the entire Zeiss line up i can honestly state that this lens lives on my camera! The first thing that comes to mind when holding this lens is the epic quality of Carl Zeiss compared to Canon or Nikon. From the lens hood, to the focus/zoom ring action, to the super fast focus and finally cripsy/contrasty image output this lens is marvelous. I'm using this on my Sony A77 and soon A99 and it pairs wonderfully. I also have a SAL70200G for 36-300mm cropped range all @ a solid 2.8 aperture. In my opinion this lens with an A77 is hard to beat for any event coverage such as car shows, exhibits, expos, whatever the case may be this thing can handle it. Of course it can also handle portraits, fashion, landscapes and more.I would recommend this to anyone considering a 24-70 lens. I may give up my Canon 5d mk ii / 50L combo and go full Sony... not sure yet!Only con would be that bokeh at 24-35 really isn't anything spectacular but then again 2.8 isn't going to produce that. Higher in the range you can get excellent headshots/portraits with smooth bokeh.

I purchased this lens for its great glass, the very fast focusing, the build quality and the versatility that this lens provides. Yes it is very heavy, but it compares to an equivalent Canon or Nikon product in weight. I have used this particular lens now for about two weeks on a Sony SLT A99V body and conclude that I made an excellent choice, because the clarity even under very low lighting is really amazing. Focus action is silent and very fast. Even macro work is outstanding when compared to a more specialized macro lens. Yes, this CZ 24-70 will be my all around lens. Some reviewers have complained about the lens shade, I found that the shade provided with my lens seems to be made from very strong plastic material and works absolutely fine. Extremely well made this 24-70 f2.8 Zeiss is my first "professional" lens that isn't a Nikon or Canon. It compares very well in terms of build and image quality and in use even feels a little better made. It's early days yet as I've only had it for a month so I can't say if image quality is on an even par with those two main competitors but initial impressions are very good - it focuses quickly (on my a99) and images look very sharp. With Sony's built in sensor shift image stabilisation (which also works fantastically) I have a more compact lens than the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 VR, and Canon have nothing to match it.I am very glad I purchased this lens and can highly recommend it.Value for money? Periscope quality for full frame DSLR

This lens is a real man's tool, being somewhat robust in both weight and appearance. It makes a statement on the front of any DSLR that it's all about business - and it is. It reminds me of the 120mm main gun on the M1A2 tank - ready to take on anything that comes its way. Sony has clearly delivered a lens that can fill many needs with astounding sharpness and clarity throughout the entire range of 24-70mm. The bokeh effect and other essential attributes when taking portraits meet or exceed my treasured Minolta 85mm 1.4 lens. The lens is so versatile, that I have devoted it to primary use on my a850. This lens clearly helps close the gap in the lack of high-end professional quality glass available for A-Mount cameras these days. Sony should continue to develop more of these Zeiss pro-quality tools. They are an absolute must for anyone shooting with the new full-frame DSLRs like the A850 / A900. It's been a VERY long time since devoted Minolta A-Mount fans had something to cheer about. Suffice it to say the A-Mount is charging back hard and fast! If you are a Cannon or Nikon owner - take a hard look at the new Sony offerings. The new full-frame A850 or A900, when combined with this lens, will drive you to consider putting your old gear on the shelf!

This lens is a good enough reason to choose Sony as your DSLR system. Yes, the weight will be a shocker regardless of how many times you will see it in the reviews. Fast lens are heavy and this one is especially front heavy, do not underestimate this statement. Standard neck straps are a waste of time; get a Black Rapid or a similar strap and then the weight is not an issue anymore. Does the performance outweigh the weight? In my opinion, absolutely yes. The color rendering is truly beautiful and unique and the center focus is nothing short of breathtaking. I am glazing at many images I take realizing there is no real improvement I can gain at the PP stage of my RAW images, its near perfection out of the lens. In my opinion, the outcome is close enough to dedicated great primes. Corner sharpness is great. From my experience, the lens has a shallow DOF up to f4.5 or even f5 so as long as the objects are in the same plane you will start getting wonderful corners at a relatively wide aperture (4 and even wider). Focus is blazingly fast, and I mean fast! No product is perfect; flare could be better controlled. You never know what the future will bring your way. You can buy APS-C Sony/Zeiss lenses that are slightly slower but are much cheaper. However; with Sony revolutionizing the FF market by bringing affordable top notch FF bodies this fast lens keeps all the options open although it comes at a price. The build quality seems great but I haven't had It long enough to properly report about it. It is reasonable to assume that if there were issues they would surface by now at the relevant owners' forums. By the nature of the zoom range (24-70) this unique top-notch lens is likely to be your most used lens, if you can live with the size and weight take the plunge.

The best prime zoom lens for Sony A-mount cameras.
2 April 2015

The Sony lens produces extremely sharp images as expected from a Zeiss lens. The lens automatic zoom is extremely fast and very quite. The low light performance is excellent due to the f2.8 aperture that can be used throughout the 24-70mm zoom range. The lens is very versatile and can be used for a wide variety of photography including landscape, wedding photography, portraits and sport. The lens built is of a very high standard. The lens feels like you are holding a solid block of glass and therefore may be on the heavy side for some users. However its worth carrying the extra weight for the quality of photos you will obtain. This is definitely the best lens I have ever owned.

I rented this lens, because a shoot came up and I needed some superior images. I wasn't sold on all the type of the Zeiss lenses. I was have severe buyers remorse for buying my A65, as the images just haven't lived up to my expectations, and was seriously considering trading it in on a Canon. I got this lens and tested it out and the image quality, just screwing around was astounding, Great contrast, superior colors, ultra clear images with incredible detail. When I put it to task during my shoot it did NOT disappoint. The lens is almost TOO perfect. I LOVED the focus hold button. Really comes in handy. Someone also shooting the event had a 5D mark3 with l-series lenses, and the image quality with the 24-70 beat those out. Very impressive lens. I never thought I would say this about a lens that cost almost $2k, but its worth every cent!!!The ONLY time the auto focus wasn't spot on was shooting Indy Cars at top speed, through a tiny window, where in one second there was bare track, and the next 1/10th of a second the farm was filled with a car whizzing past you at 190mph or more. had to switch to manual focus then and that fixed the problem, but it did the task a few times, but it did struggle.

Zeiss up your life

I recently purchased a preowned Sony 24-70mm f/2,8 Vario-Sonnar T* Zeiss ZA SSM A-Mount (phew) lens from Adorama and it surprised me in a few ways. Sony's 16-50mm f/2.8 lens is freakishly good, but I wanted a fast, quiet lens with more stretch at the long end. Surprise #1. As this is a full-frame lens, I was thinking I'd get the equivalent of 36-105mm on my Sony a77 II with its 1.5x crop factor. Nope. My full-frame 105mm macro lens becomes 165mm, but this lens retains the same magnification and angle of view as my other APS-C lenses do at the same indicated focal lengths. Hmmm... Surprise #2. I knew it was a sharp lens, but didn't realize how sharp it really is, until it made me reconfigure my camera to the correct AF Micro Adjustment setting. I knew it was a sharp lens, but didn't realize how sharp it really is, until it made me reconfigure my camera to the correct AF Micro Adjustment setting. The camera unknowingly had been set to -4, and the first photos from this lens were fuzzy until I discovered the incorrect setting. Once corrected, it tops the otherwise great 16-50 lens, no slouch itself, wipes up Sony's 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3, and positively kills my Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 (well, no surprise there). Surprise #3. I'd heard it was heavy, but not hernia belt heavy. This is not an all day walk-around lens unless you have Popeye arms and a Hulk Hogan neck. That alone should take a star off, but it does everything else so well you'll just have to forgive that extra mass. Besides, people gawk at this thing like it's some alien life form. Cell phone (so-called) photographers will snicker at it, but there's no denying how good this thing is. Sony's Alpha mounts are on the endangered list, soon to be killed off by their mirrorless E-mount line, so I'm rounding up as much A-mount stuff I can while I can. This thing gets over two grand new, and is probably worth it, but at $600 used, this was a steal. Thanks, Adorama!

[Rewarded Review] Amazing lens, amazing cost
31 January 2012

First of all, let me start by telling what this lens ISN'T. It is not a lens for a general shooter (unless you have that kind of scratch laying around). This is a fully-blooded professional constant aperture zoom lens that is designed to take the abuse of a working photographer. It is big. It is heavy. Most of the lens is manufactured from metal components. Much like other Zeiss lenses, even the lens hood is metal, and has a velvety covering on the inside to prevent light reflection. The lens hood is just a small example of the amazing attention to detail the designers put into this lens.Performance: The Sony SSM motor is silent, and VERY fast (I used it on an a900). It is not a lens for a general shooter (unless you have that kind of scratch laying around). The lens hood is just a small example of the amazing attention to detail the designers put into this lens.Performance: The Sony SSM motor is silent, and VERY fast (I used it on an a900). Accuracy is top notch, but be aware you may need to focus calibrate this with your camera (if it supports it) due to manufacturing tolerances.Build Quality: Again, it's mostly metal. The finish is PERFECT, absolutely flawless (Which I expect for this price). The lettering on the lens appears to be laser etched, not painted. The zoom action is well damped, but not difficult to use. You can tell from the feel of the zoom action that there are some very tight tolerances being used on this lens. I feel like I could drop this thing on the ground and it would shatter the concrete!Image Quality: Ok, here's the biggie. On full-frame at f2.8, the corners are noticeably soft at all focal lengths (looking at 100% crops). But as I looked through my photos, I remember thinking "But who cares? LOOK at that!" You can read reviews until you're blue in the face, but no one is going to notice the difference in sharpness across the frame. What people notice are the things this Zeiss excels at - colors. Contrast. Bokeh. All three are beautifully rendered. Typical Zeiss colors - natural, but vibrant. I've yet to find a lens that can match the blues of a true Zeiss. Contrast - very good, even from f2.8.I've heard bad things about the bokeh from other reviewers, and I can honestly say that as long as you use common sense, the bokeh is smooth and buttery. Use at 70mm and f2.8, nothing but cream. I have used it several times at 24mm and f2.8 (to fake the look of the 24mm f2.0), and the bokeh did not disappoint there. I don't know, maybe I'm not as picky as other reviewers, but there are no problems here. All in all, the Zeiss is a chunk of a lens that is every bit as good as the Canon and Nikon versions, if not better (not in corner sharpness, but in the things that really matter). It will last a lifetime of use. The only problem is the price. But if you're reading this review, chances are you are already familiar with the Zeiss name and know what to expect. The difference with this 24-70 f2.8 is that it is worth every penny of it's outrageous price!
