A good second camera.

A useful camera which is fairly easy to operate and use in connection with a computer. The resolution of 20.1 Megapixels is a little disappointing as the picture quality is little better than than my old Olympus 3.2 Megapixel camera. I had to make sure the auto flash was turned off as, on a dull Winter's day, very underexposed photos were the result. I have taken a few videos and I noticed that the kept going momentarily out of focus, for no discernible reason, and that those taken in artificial light were underexposed, which might be adjustable in the editing. Suspecting that the software might be the problem I closed the software and uploading proceeded at a satisfactory speed. I subsequently removed the software from my computer as I am quite capable of managing, and editing my photos, and uploading them to a Could if I so wish; PlayMemoriesHome seemed to be more of a hinderance than a help.

I bought this camera because of the reviews for it. I also thought the 5PC accessory bundle would be nice to have for a new camera. I did receive the camera and only the camera case which came with the camera. The case was inside a plastic bag and on the outside of the bag it says, Other item in this kit will ship in separate packages. I am still waiting for the other items.

If you are looking for a 20MP camera on a budget this is a great choice. While the image quality when zooming in under low light isn't always ideal it does shoot crisp pictures in most all settings. I inserted a microSD card left over from one of my phones and used a SD adapter to fit it in the camera. It immediately recognized it and it has been easy to pull pictures off of the camera when I need to. If you are expecting vivid HD images then this camera isn't for you as I did find I got a lot of slightly blurred images or fuzzy ones in the dark because the camera let too much *light noise* in from things like scoreboards, neon lighting, and table lamps. I had to play around with the settings to find the appropriate shooting mode for many locations but a day or two of playing with it and I learned the menu and how the modes worked pretty well without having to glance at the booklet. I was pleasantly surprised on the sound that the camera was able to pick up. For an example I was at my nephew's Varsity football game sitting at about the 40 yard line halfway up the stands and I wanted to record their post game chant. I sit in a big group of chatty people and the camera picked up only the noise going on in front of the camera and right next to me. It also picked up clearly their chant from at least 40ft away which was great. You can also tap the shutter button to have the camera clear up a shot and then hold it down to take the picture which is handy when working in odd settings. As I said on a budget this is one of the better choices and it is loaded with user friendly features that even my young nieces figured out in a snap. I used the automatic shoot mode with automatic flash detection and it came out with some great shots in both bright light, low light, and football field at night under stadium lights. The camera is quick, responsive, and the battery life so far has been excellent. I charged it once and I've used it at least once a day over the past couple weeks to shoot images and video and it barely lost 25% battery. I recommend adding an additional battery and a battery charger - I got one brand new for less than $15 and a hard case for $6 if you are planning on using this camera for a while and using it heavily. I did not have to install drivers for my pc but WIndows 10 is designed so drivers don't have to be installed or it automatically finds them for older devices. I simply plugged the camera in, hit the power button, and it went into usb mode so I could open the folders and pick out photos I wanted to copy. The usb cord it comes with is adequate for most data transfer and I have not yet had to transfer more than 1GB at a time off of the camera. It isn't usb 3.0 so you may find a bit of a slowdown if you do a high volume transfer. So far with image size it isn't compressed but also the pics and videos aren't taking up a ton of space. I simply have a 32GB card inserted and feel that will be more than enough for my needs as I tend to transfer all of my stuff off and onto a storage drive once a month to keep track of all of my overly annoying paparazzi moments with my favorite family/friends haha ;)

I LOVE MY SONY CYBERSHOT DSC-W800!!
23 April 2024

I love compact cameras that have powerful capabilities to capture clear images for anything you what in a picture for various uses of photography! The Sony DSC-W800 20.1 MegaPixels has video, wide format, portraits, scene, close-up, flash for nighttime picture options for personal use! Let's put it this way that I don't know what I would do if I weren't able to use this cute little DSC camera because the big cheese wheels of corporations who make these cameras don't make these cute little cameras anymore! Now it's a buy and grab as many as you can from ebay of these cute little DSC cameras!! 04-23-2024 - Monday 11:51 P.M. East Coast Time

Light Little Snapper

Bought this camera as a low cost way to obtain wide angle photos. It is very light and compact, making it ideal to pop into a pocket to take photos that are an improvement on what a phone might produce. This is a budget camera, so don't expect premium performance. Having said that, good quality photos are produced in good light conditions. There is a difference in image quality between 10M and 20 M pixel settings, though this is not huge and so 10M should be fine for most users. In lower light levels there is obvious reduction in image quality, with colour blotches apparent as the camera adjusts the ISO sensitivity. Auto focus works well and is reasonably quick. With a 5x optical zoom, the camera won't win any zoom prizes though final images are fine when tken in good light.Unusually for a budget camera, the camera can be used in manual mode with control over ISO and other settings - interesting for a dabble into taking some control over picture taking. Photos taken into the light are not so good due to flare washing out the image - backlit photos are to be preferred. The flash is powerful for in-room photos.Reflecting the low price, the LCD display resolution is low, making it tricky to determine if a photo has good focus, though zooming into the photo helps.A single button for taking movies makes videos a doddle to start. The zoom and autofocus operate when recording - possibly taking movies the strongest point of this camera. In summary, despite the small size, low weight and low cost possibly leading to thinking that this camera is not worth a look, it performs well as an everyday snapper (with that bit more functionality) that just asks to be slipped into a pocket. The single button movie function is a great idea if you need to quickly whip out the camera for filming.

Meets my needs well. High recommendation.
12 January 2022

As advertised, exactly what I wanted. Small, Lite, easy to use controls, takes a decent picture. The 'Easy' control setting means you just pick it up and shoot. No 5 million options to adjust. The camera has 20 megapixels which is very adequate and the optic 5X and mechanical 5X telephoto gives you a nice range. One small downside: the flash does not carry far, but its ok. My use is for family photos and mostly around the world travel photos. I bought an extra battery & charger. I bought a small hard side case for travel protection. Adorama was one of the few places stocking this in demand camera. Get it, it's good.

Not completely pleased
24 August 2021

I have been practicing with my new Sony camera and am having some difficulties. While I love the look and the size, I'm having trouble taking pictures. The shutter is extremely slow, and I don't know whether to continue holding down the button or release it. The screen just goes blank for perhaps 1-1.5 seconds, then clicks. It sometimes says that it is 'analyzing'. I am not sure what to do. I bought this on line so do not have a store to visit where I can get help. Right now I am frustrated with this purchase and may need to return it.

STICKY LENS & DIGITAL ISSUES
9 April 2019

I only used it 2 or 3xs, simply for those quick captured memories of my children's movements. When I grab to turn the button on, the lens has a hard time coming out, I always keep it in a hidden pouch or back in its original box, if not in use, to preserve the life of the unit and to keep it safe from the hands of my kiddos. However, it just all of a sudden started to read, "Turn Off & On" to reset the lens, I guess. So, I thought, good it will fix itself and I can get that picture or video, so family members don't miss out...But instead I had to just grab my good ol' reliable phone instead, but that had no more memory left for me to get those picture perfect moments. So, I am not very happy with the product. And I never usually write bad reviews, I try to just leave it alone and move on. But if I would have seen at least an honest review, I would have purchased and paid a little more for a better camera.

Simple to use for holidays and people pics and movies. Macro is no good.
2 August 2020

Macro is hard to achieve. You cant use it very close up , like hallmarks or insects. It is describe by adverts that this has macro and I would say that this is not true. The close up it can manage, about 4 inches away from subject, will blur most of the time, unless you use a tripod. Its relatively easy to download pics for eBay selling. My mobile Samsung 3 has a magnifying mode where I can photo silver and gold hallmarks very clearly if I use a tripod. This is much better macro than this digital camera. The movie mode is fairly good. for Holiday snaps its not bad , Easier to use than a mobile.

Unless you are both conversant with digital cameras and with searching a website full of tech speak you should avoid this camera - and maybe any by Sony -or maybe any digital camera - or maybe any modern tech equipment.I bought from JL because I had believed they would quality control the products they sold. That is clearly not so. The camera is not supplied with a case - a tacky bit of cost saving. The scrap of paper pretending to be instructions starts by telling you how to fit a memory card not supplied - so, having bought on line I still had to go to a shopto buy a card as an extra; that will cost you between £12 and £25. Only in the minute letters of the tech spec -the last thing you look at with a new camera - does it refer to the built in memory. . . . . .Reminds me of when I bought a DVD player on line from JL and it arrived without the connecting cables. If you go on line to JL you will see that there is no helpful statement next to the product telling you what extras you will need.My faith in JL has plummeted. They may match prices but they don't appear to exercise any quality assessment on the products they sell. JL should be asking themselves if this product matches the market expectations; people buying an automatic, compact 'simple' camera are entitled to think that the product will be complete and supplied with comprehensive instructions, on paper, with a decent font size and in plain English.Final insult was when I printed out the on line receipt from JL - and found it printed out as 6 pages!
