A Lens For All (well most) Seasons

I bought this lens to simplify my Sony Alpha 6000-series camera outfit, rather than lug the short zoom and longer zoom that came with it in the first place. Its zoom range covers what the 'kit' lens short zoom does anyway and it even start to encroach on what the longer zoom can do, although, obviously not as far. Being a Zeiss lens, it doesn't disappoint. Sharpness and quickness of focus are excellent. Being f4 maximum aperture all through its range helps with 'bokeh' at all focal lengths. Reassuringly metal in construction with smooth rotating rings.

It was clear from reading other B&H user reviews of both the SONY and Hasselblad versions, that this was a great lens, but that numerous defective copies had been shipped and sold. Accordingly, I went to the Bob Atkins website, learned how to construct, use, and interpret a lens test target, and tested the lens I received. Although it was very sharp in the center with observable but acceptable fall off at the edges, in one corner the sharpness consistently fell off more than the others to a degree that was unacceptable at some focal lengths and apertures. I then returned and exchanged that lens for another copy, which tested uniformly sharp in the center with modest, but consistent and acceptable fall off at the edges. I am thrilled with this lens. It has a very useful range of focal length, great sharpness, color and contrast. The OSS is an added plus. This lens is markedly superior to the not at all bad 18-55mm kit lens I purchased with the camera. It serves as a useful one lens does it all, although it is not intended to and does not replace the superb SONY 10-18mm ultrawide zoom. Bottom line: this is a great lens, but at this price point be sure you get a good copy!

A great lens, not in size, but in every other way.

The results are extremely pleasing. The lens copes with multiple shots well, and the images are very sharp. Only yesterday I was reviewing some shots and was amazed as to how much I can crop without any degradation of image quality. The 16-70mm zoom range is very good too and is just about right for my needs as it goes from a 35mm full frame equivalent of 24mm at the wide end to a portrait pleasing 105mm at the other. Finally, colour rendition is very good and my pictures look very pleasing. Although it isn’t a cheap lens, I chose to buy it in favour of the kit lens often sold with the a6500. I am very pleased I did and I know that moving to Sony has been a good decision.

A great small go anywhere lens
11 March 2021

Let me say that I have most Sony APSC lenses, so I can honestly compare most of them along with the Sigma Contemporary Prime lenses, My copy of this lens is nothing short of superb. It does not have softness in the corner and is comparable to the Sony E 16-55 2.8 lens that costs about $300 more.Every lens meets a specific need and as long as you use it in the way it was design you will have few complaints. This lens covers a full frame equivalent of 24-105mm and has Optical Steady Shot. Images out of it are definitely better than those out of the E 18-105 PZ OSS and E 18-135 OSS. The main advantage it has though is that it goes from 16-70 and is significantly smaller. Now for the elephant in the room, how does it compare to the E 16-55/2.8? I would say that in most situations you will be hard pressed to tell the difference, but the 2.8 is a bigger, faster lens with better image quality on a stabilized body like my a6600 or a6500. The problem with the 2.8 is that it is bigger and more noticeable. I have mistakenly brought big camera lenses to places where I wanted to photograph my granddaughter and drawn way too much attention to myself. This lens is small enough where that will not happen. It is also a joy to vary because it is so light. If you get a good copy of this lens as I did, you will never regret having it.

Best travel lens for Sony
11 January 2024

Best travel lens I've owned. I switched to Sony in 2016, and bought this lens for my A6000. Now, four APS-C and 3 FF bodies later, this is still my travel favorite. On the amazingly compact Sony APS-C bodies, the combo slips easily into a waist pack or photo vest pocket. It is sharp and a perfect range for travel, where the extra mm on the wide side get more use than more on the tele end would bring. After 8 years, it still rocks.A big test came earlier this year with a bucket list photo trip to Galapagos. An FE 100-400 GM stayed on the A7R4, and this trusty lens on the A6100 most of the time, for a combo that won't break my back. It is very hard to tell the difference from this, the GM zoom and the relatively few times I went to my primes even on a 60" screen. Bravo.

Good general purpose lens

I've had this lens for a number of years firstly with my a6500 and now with an a6700.It is very good between 24 and 55mm and good outside those focal lengths. Stopping down improves the image quality at the edges of needed. The A6700 seems to get more from the lens, maybe because of the better sensor.

Sharp - and I compared it to several lenses
21 July 2023

I have owned this lens for four years, using with a A6500. I have seen reviews critical of its sharpness which surprised me. I am primarily a Canon shooter (R5 and R with solid RF L glass) and use the Sony when I seek a lighter weight kit. I felt the need to leave this review, as I wish to share my viewpoint that this lens is an incredible blend of sharpness and portability.About a year ago, I set up a sharpness test with this lens against the following: Sony PZ 18-105 OSS F4, Sony 50mm F1.8, Canon EF 24-105 F4 Mark 2, Canon EF 85 F1.2 (both of these converted with a Metabones adapter) using the a6500 body.Pixel peeping these images in Lightroom, I have to say that the Sony 16-70 F4 hung in there very well with sharpness across the zoom range (even at 70mm ... MoreI have owned this lens for four years, using with a A6500. But I will tell you that if you do have a good copy, this lens provides great results and is such a pleasant experience in terms of weight and portability. It is great.

I also have the Sony 35 1.8 "sharper" videos and fast auto focus low light. The Sigma 30 1.4 best IQ "pin sharp" in static shots low light and action daylight great color. With these 3 lenses I have it covered and can get sharp images all around. The Ruggard Onyx 25 case will fit the A6500, Z 16-70 with lens case and the Sony 35 1.8 lens perfectly (5.2 x 7.5 x 4.0") Hope this helps because there seems to be a lot of hate for this lens that made it hard for me to pull the trigger on it. Its a Sharp lens just don't hold it to Full Frame standards.

The Perfect (but $pendy) Replacement for the Sony 16-50 Starter Lens

I have long been perfectly content with my Sony 16-50mm "kit" lens. At unboxing, I tested and found no flaws at all. I've been using it almost daily for 3 months now and it is my walkabout lens, often paired with my new-to-me Sony SEL1018 10-18mm Wide-Angle Zoom Lens (Renewed). Together they give a really useful range from 15mm to 105mm, but if I go out with just one lens, it will be the 16-70 f/4 Zeiss.

Very handy and fairly good optical quality
14 November 2016

The 16-70 f4 is a perfect walk about lens for the a6000/a6300/a6500. It is small, light, and has pretty good optical quality. While the zoom with your feet thing is great for artists, or in ideal shooting conditions, or for the one perfect prime crowd -- in reality it is not practical for photo-journalists, street, wedding, and event photogs. In fast moving situations, nothing beats being able to frame the shot accurately and quickly in the viewfinder: you lose no quality by having to cropin post; you don't miss a good shot due to changing a lens at the wrong moment; you'll need three prime lenses to replace this one zoom. However, the trade-off for using this zoom is somewhat lower optical quality. How much this matters in real life is moot. Thee 16-70 is actually a Sony-Zeiss. Zeiss now outsources a lot of its production to licensed suppliers in Asia (the cost of making anything in Europe cuts heavily into the profit margin). My copy has made in Thailand on it. I do have a real zeiss, the all-manual all-metal Loxia 21 f2.8, which is a beautiful gem of a lens. And it hasmade in Japan on it. I love my zeiss 21 prime, but find it impractical for fast moving shooting like photojournalism.I understand, however, that Zeiss still makes some of its top lenses in Germany. Finally, this lens is too expensive for a good, but not stellar, mid-range zoom.
