Sony ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone
Sony ECM-B1M The Sony ECM-B1M is an ultra-compact camera-mount digital shotgun microphone designed for mobile video creators working with Sony cameras equipped with the Multi Interface Shoe. Released alongside the a7R IV, which benefits from its built-in Digital Audio Interface, the ECM-B1M is able to produce its best quality by delivering a digital audio stream directly to the camera through the Multi Interface Shoe. Other Sony cameras with the standard Multi Interface Shoe can still make use of the microphone as there is a selectable digital/analog output. The ECM-B1M is equipped with eight high-performance mic capsules and advanced digital signal processing, providing three selectable directivity patterns for a wide range of shooting and recording situations. Plug-and-play operation makes the microphone easy to use right out of the box—you can immediately start recording your YouTube videos, Facebook Live streams, and interviews, at home, in the studio, or on the go.

I am quite amazed at the performance of this mic, as digital signal processing gives excellent directionality and off-axis signal rejection when needed. Having three pickup pattens at the touch of a switch is extremely useful in the field to cover different shooting situations quickly. The noise reduction feature is very effective without interfering with signal quality. I am finding it possible to do excellent interviews with the on camera mic at distances that would have been impossible before. Maybe not quite as good as having a sound man, but a huge step forward for one-man-banding. I am a content creator and videographer and I use the a7s3 as my run-n-gunning, slow-mo capturing, quick-clip getting video beast. Alongside my Canon C70 it is a fantastic camera mate.... however to keep this camera in this fast category you will want a microphone that first all all captures fantastic audio, but also one where batteries are not a worry and cables are not a thing... enter the ECM-B1M.This is that microphone. No cables??? No batteries??? And fantastic sound? Seriously sign up. I actually waited on back-order for 2 months for this thing, and it was worth the wait.Speaking of waiting... but wait there is more! So, when I mean fantastic audio, I mean it because you get like a mini-KVM. You get analog controls to dial in the input, as well as controls to how you want to pickup the audio, I.E Omni, UNI, or Multi-Directional sort of thing... in other words, do you want to pick up all around the mic, or just the front? the back? This does that. Finally, the icing on the cake, besides all this, and how it seamlessly integrates with the A7s3, is the size... its small and light. Actually it shocks you just how small and light it is.p.s. comes with a dead cat. This is the PERFECT microphone for run-n-gunners. Trust me.Power of Drew.

I would have given this five stars, but...My only major disappointment with this amazing mic is: the moment you plug it into the hot shoe it deactivates the 3.5mm mic input on the side of the camera (A7siii)... which means you can't run two channels of audio with it attached (e.g., with a supplemental Rode Wireless Go lav mic or equivalent). This was a bit frustrating for the price tag and seems like it is something that could be addressed in a firmware update (hint, hint Sony). Also, due to the internal nature of this problem, the lack of any aftermarket solution is equally disappointing. My only other minor gripe is the floating stabilization feature fails a bit (and produces an undesirable knocking sound) when pushed past a brisk walking pace in uneven terrain ... That said, if you are planning to regularly move quickly and aggressively while filming, you likely wont be happy with this mic.Other than those two gripes, I am supremely impressed with everything else about this microphone.

This is the best Grab-and-go vlogging microphone I've found anywhere at any price period.I know most buyers are putting this mic on their Sony DSLR bodies, I am using the Sony AX-700 video camera and it's well suited for this particular mic.The voice quality and clarity, while effectively cancelling outside and background noise is flawless! No battery and the controls are clear and available right on the back.If you have any mic experience at all, this is one you can use easily without the owner's pamphlet.Very intuitive. Great lightweight, compact microphone. The lack of wires significantly adds to the ease of use. The carrying case is sensibly designed, too. I like everything about the controls; the selectable patterns, noise filters and automatic volume are all useful. It's still very expensive and the shock mount is a bit underdesigned, meaning it risks bottoming out if you move too much while filming. I haven't tested the digital audio yet, as my camera doesn't support it.
This microphone is small, light, easy to mount and the sound quality itself is excellent. The directional pattern option from full shotgun, to omni also works very well. The freedom from batteries and cables and the digital sound which works on my A7C is also great. Everything from sound quality, function and form factor is excellent and would make it a perfect travel microphone. It is ruined, sadly, by the 'bobble' mount which of course cannot be replaced by anything else, and which transmits every touch of the camera or wobble into a background of annoying interference that ruins it all. I have since watched several comparison 'reviews' on YouTube and just noticed this on a few sample clips but of course 'reviewers' rarely ever actually 'review' properly and used ... I have since watched several comparison 'reviews' on YouTube and just noticed this on a few sample clips but of course 'reviewers' rarely ever actually 'review' properly and used a tripod where this issue isn't noticed as much. There is no way to use it on my A7C and wee-bill S stabilizer, the reason I bought it, without hearing every touch or whir noise and it ruins the audio. This does not happen on my Deity D4 duo, which sounds better because it is free from all the interference, and costs almost one quarter the price. There is one thing that I did which helped a lot. I wound a thin rubber band around the thin section between the mount and the microphone which solved most of the 'wobble' noises but not all the 'resonant' fumbling sounds of hands or stabilizer which are of course going to be there if one uses this microphone for the purpose it was intended. I also have to use the low cut filter to remove the low rumbling noise which is low in the background regardless of how it is mounted. This is also annoying. If only Deity and Sony could become friends and make a light, qualitymicrophone together, free from cables and batteries and with a small form factor, better quiet mount and stereo/mono feature.... then this world would be a better place.Sorry Sony....I tried to love this microphone ...but at least my A7C is still awesomely incredible. There, I just ended on a positive note.
I don't have any of the issues with the mount or mount noise that the top critical viewer (as of Dec 2019) has had. This is my favorite mic because of its convenience.1) No more having to fuss with popping out the plastic piece of the camera to the mic jack, wiggle the 3.5 mm male thread through my L-Mount and then plug it in.2) I don't like an attention-grabbing furry rocket projecting from the top of my camera. The Sony is small and inconspicuous.3) There is a noise cancelling option, which works decently well (refer to tests of it on Youtube). Great for noisy environments.4) Modulating the sound gathering shape is very useful. If I'm in a quiet environment I go omni. Talking head I have it gather sound from straight ahead. Something in between I choose the middle option. This takes 1 second to switch on the fly.5) It has an Auto-mode for when I just want to get rolling right away and not put the extra effort into more refined audio--which can be improved in post as a safety net, so I love that convenience.6) I never have to haul it to the charger. My power charging station is on it's third surge protector, so I appreciate spending 2 less minutes every few days plugging in more cables.7) I never have to worry that it might be low on battery. Battery anxiety is real.8) I never have to worry that I forgot to turn it on. I lost several clips on my Rode due to this. The convenience factor kills it on multiple levels.Look to other classes of mics for premium sound quality. It's expensive but you get quality engineering.
I compared *edited* audio recorded directly through this mic and external audio using a Sennheiser MKE600 recorded to a Zoom H6. While the H6 registered lower tones from my voice, to my surprise the Sony was not too far off recording a great range of high/mid/lows. Considering the External Mic was less than a feet away from me and the Sony was about 4-5 feet away, the Sony was just outstanding. It serves my goal to simplify the editing process without sacrificing audio quality. You get what you pay for with this mic.
This mic fits the bill when you need something better than scratch audio but can't be bothered with a wireless lav or more complicated setup. The slim form factor and simplicity (no extra batteries or cables) make it ideal for run-and-gun video or hybrid shooters. The sound quality is remarkably good for a mic of its size-even for informal interviews. Docking a star because the suspension system isn't great-as other reviews have noted. Still the best option in its class for those invested in the Sony ecosystem.
Although, this is likely not the use case for many, I have this attached to an a7c that I use for work calls (enterprise software sales/consulting). Primarily google meet, sometimes bluejeans or zoom. It replaces a Shure mv7. The Shure is fantastic, but good volume, and quality sound is best when the Shure mic is on cam. That setup is distracting. With the ECM-B1M, the mic is almost just as good (set to NC, ATT 0, Digital Audio) and is completely out of view.
